This isn't really that hard of a scenario because morally, it's in your right to defend yourself...

hell, even the -freaking law- wouldn't punish you for it.

To make a more difficult scenario, it needs to be far more controversial

According to this situation, you insulted this guy earlier. Surely that would be a provoked attack and change things?

Anyway, I probably wouldn't kill him. I know I can't fight, so I'd just throw something at him and try and make a break for it. If all else fails, I'd jump out the window. I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of shooting me.

A friend of mine is a cop. After two years on the force, a man pulled out a gun and my friend killed him. Afterward, he was very depressed. I asked him if there was any upsides to killing a man. He said "yeah, getting to feel bad about it".

So yes, I wouldn't hesitate.

That's quite intense, right there. My dad once told me my granddad was this close to shooting a guy in the chest with a revolver because he wouldn't back away(long, weird story), and he never forgot about it(hence why I know about this, in retrospect).

So, yeah, shooting someone ain't no cakewalk however one slices it. Hope you're doing fine.

It really burns deep into your mind. At first, a dozen "what if" scenarios haunted me for a while. Frequent nightmares, and even "daymares" sometimes. I gradually convinced myself I had no choice, which stopped the "what if"s, but not the nightmares. Those eventually became less frequent as I made peace with myself, but I still carry it with me, and it's been eight years, almost nine. Sometimes, I'll be reminded by an offhand comment, or seeing something on TV. I suppose this is about as "fine" as it gets.

The only really accurate posts imho are the ones who say they believe they'd do X, but they're not sure because they've never been in such a situation. You really don't know until you're there. I sure didn't.

As much as I would love to say, "Hell yeah I'd do it. Afterwards, I'd make a cup of tea until the police arrived then sleep a full night when they left," I won't because I would probably think about the moment several times a day, including when I lie fully awake in bed at night staring at the ceiling and wondering what the hell came over me.

So I suppose the answer is yes, but I would do anything possible to avoid it.

This is a real hard question. When asked if he were triying to kill me or something, i guess id answer yes. However, im saying just sitting here with no knowledge watsoever. To answer this question correctly id have to already been through a situation like that.

My answer is No. If I have the time and capability to kill him, I can also disarm him. Which I will proceed to do. After that it's run like hell or contain and subdue him.

However, theoretically assuming that killing him is honestly the only option I have, it's down to him or me....

Yes. he's come after me with the clear intent to seriously harm/kill me, he's breaking and entering (clearly not giving a sh*t about the law) and not leaving despite knowing the police is on their way. He's beyond rationale and threatening my life. He can't be reasoned with and he doesn't care about the consequences. If lethal force is the only thing capabable of resolving the situation, I'd use it. Once he is down, I'll call for an ambulance and do everything I can to help keep him alive (no matter how unlikely that would be), but I would give him every chance at living I could while retaining my own life.

But this situation is a bit unrealistic, because honestly if you have the means to kill him, you have the means to subdue him by wounding him, disarming him or at least use means that don't immediately lead to his death (giving him a chance to be saved by the paramedics/hospital staff).

But afterwards, I'd likely need to see a councellor a few times to help with the nightmares.

I had something like that happen to me, but not that severe. I had a friend of mine who flipped out on drugs one night and tried to stab me in the eye. Luckily for me, I had a rather large ornamental scythe hanging on the door, so I grabbed it and struck his weapon hand.

I don't think I should feel bad about it, but I do. He was a guitar player before that and I wonder if he ever recovered. He was on a downward spiral anyway, I guess...

My point is, I can understand how what you went through is a lot worse. But it was either him or you, man. You did the right thing.

Hmmm...to defend myself, maybe. To defend my significant other/friend/family, hell yes. Straight up, he'd get a kunai in the throat. I practice with mine every day and sharpen them every night. I can hit a target the size of a maple leaf from twelve paces consistently.

True enough, but theres a difference between killling someone for fun, and killing someone out of self defense, obligation, etc.

I'd really try not too, as there is no way of knowing what's going on in the intruder's head. People can sometimes do crazy things entirely out of character if something snaps, and I personally feel it would be a terrible thing to kill someone without knowing the reason why they're in my house in the first place.

Having never been in this situation however, I really can't give a proper answer.

Well I've made a comfortable hobby out of inviting women over to my house, sleeping with them then drugging their water, killing them and dissecting their bodies so yeah killing a man would be a nice fresh new thing.

If I couldn't think/act clearly enough to shoot him in, say, the arm holding the gun or the leg or something then yes, I'd shoot to kill. I'd rather shoot the legs (knees as a last resort...it's about as bad as a good shot in the testes and a bit more wheelchair-inducing) or ideally, the arm/hand holding the gun. Or somehow disable the guy. But if it came down to it I'd kill someone who was trying to kill me assuming I hadn't done something and felt like I needed to die for it, but I'd probably not be walking around free after something like that.

I'd kill him, but only after disarming him, binding him in a brutal stress position, stripping off all his clothing, starving him for a few days, flaying off much of his skin, waterboarding him for untold hours, raping him up the arse with writing utensils, roasting him over an open fire, then crucifying him inside an ice-cold meat locker to see whether the hypothermia or asphyxiation get him first. You know, like the CIA does, all non-prosecutable-because-we-have-to-cover-our-own-asses style.
