If it's the former, I generally support more varied body types overall, because it helps distinguish characters from one another and generally contributes to better animation quality.

If it's the latter...well, I'm not opposed to cartoon badonkadonk, but it's never been a personal gripe of mine that there wasn't enough of it. I mean, maybe the Japanese are just more fascinated by massive breasts than they are by a prodigious badonkadonk. Honestly, I don't discriminate.
Hmmm, I'd say that on the whole h-manga/anime offer a larger variety of body types for women than non-h anime/manga do. Fetishes are a thing and you're likely to find at least one artist catering to any of them. The vast majority are still going to be thin, improbably busty high school girls tho (maybe a bit meatier in the hips/butt/thighs on average).

So Entity X...

A: Maybe blesses the Allied leaders with a couple more brain cells to realize that shooting at people with impenetrable force fields is NOT a viable tactic?

B: Has them recruit mages of their own that aren't as worthless as the ground troops?

Sure, why not. Mixing up the body types can't hurt. Well, ok, it might hurt the more Otaku-driven shows, but those don't exactly exist to present a diverse and interesting mix of characters.

Then again, I probably shouldn't talk - one of my favourite animes is Dragon Ball Z, and whoever did the art for those has same-face syndrome so bad it hurts. ************, my Dragon Quest characters all look like Goku! Every single one! There are different faces, for fucks sake!

I don't get why anime should become more "realistic" when it comes to body-types, it's stylized appearance is exactly what sets it apart as its own thing.

Making it more diverse in character designs? yeah, I can see that, and a lot of anime who dare break that mold actually get rewarded for it, still, there's a ton of cheaply made anime out there with mass followings in the same way we still churn out samey sitcoms and bland romantic comedies, shit sells and casual consumers are actually a far larger audience than dedicated consumers, they don't much care for the direction of the industry.

No, not at all. She's not the heroine. She's the protagonist, sure, but not a hero in any form. Even her own nation is a little scared of her.

-They're not brilliant strategists. The brilliant strategies come from someone who remembers how an almost identical war in his own world went, and has a basic idea of the strategies that were used there.
-They only have the 'cute moe girls' because the story focuses on the empire. And in anime the cute moe girls are always where the focus of the story is.
-Yes, their technology is indeed more advanced than the other nations. But that doesn't mean 'nazi germany did nothing wrong'.
-God doesn't bless the empire. God manipulates the empire through faith to get to Tanya.

You're really obsessed with this aren't you? It's like you see nazi favouritism everywhere.

Didn't bless the EMpire/ What do you call making their crackpot super-weapons suddenly work as expected to the point where their already unusurpable mage units are now literally invincible? Not that the Empire needed much help considering the Allied nations are just one step below your average Aqua Teen Hunger Force villian in terms of stupidity. I swear, these guys could conquer the Allies in Evil Tanya

Deploying ground troops against an enemy that's already known tactically to be completely useless against mages, their own mages folding in seconds to the Empire's, not to mention shooting at them like the Japanese military at Godzilla (and in the scene that, as I said, made me turn off the tv) acting surprised when their bullets do nothing against the Empires elite mages.

Now, when it's obvious who's representing who here (the anime isn't exactly about it), YES, it's not just me seeing it, the anime is screaming it in my face with a megaphone about it's fetish for a nice goosestepping authoritarian Germany.

And boy oh boy, I haven't gotten into Legend of Galactic Heroes, /pol/'s favorite anime. Or Code "look at how awesome that Emperor's speech is, that's totally how we should run the world today!" Geass.

Yes, anime also needs to have more women, as opposed to squealing teenagers or older woman who look exactly like squealing teenagers. I get that they are aiming to a very specific demographic, but it is kind of boring how there is no such thing as a woman over 30 in anime. If they do exist, they exist as a 75 year old bit part who has no involvement in the story.

Yeah, Akira Toriyama's art style is certainly...distinctive. At least he has different body types, I guess?

The generic body types and faces are one of the reasons I don't watch a lot of anime. The last non-Studio Ghibli anime I watched was Gundam 00. And as fucking awesome as that was, it wasn't enough to make me give a shit about the rest of the crap the Land of the Rising Sun is tossing our way.
While I think if you're going to make one anime series the final one you'll ever see, Gundam 00 is one I would consider myself, but I have to defend anime here for a second: there is still good anime being made. Granted, filtering through all the otaku trash will drive any normal person insane, so... yeah. But hey, if you ever need a recommendation, I'll happily throw some titles in your general direction.

(Speaking of Gundam, the franchise is usually pretty good at diversity despite generally revolving around a kid with a Japanese name in a giant robot fighting other giant robots. Like, you want to see a obese character that's not the butt of the joke but actually a likable and well-liked individual who plays an important role in the plot? Go watch some Iron-Blooded Orphans.)

Anyway, I always wonder if making generic trash is actually what all those creators want instead of something they're pushed into by people who are all about making money. For instance, a few years ago I read the entirety of Gunslinger Girl. The first volume or so was kind of a turn-off. It seemed like one of those creepy series that combines two otaku favourites: little girls and big guns. There was even a pantyshot in there... But then I kept reading and the thing turned into this really engaging political action/thriller filled with interesting and strong female characters. I found myself caring about the girls. Not because they fit into some sort of little sister fantasy, but because they're human beings who were dealt shit cards by life and are trying to make the best of it. It was as if the creator used the freedom generated by moderate success to draw what he actually wanted to draw, and he ends up condemning that what certain types of readers probably started reading the series for.

And then there's the sad case of Akira Hiramoto. In his early career, he wrote and drew the acclaimed manga Me and the Devil Blues [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me_and_the_Devil_Blues_(manga)]. It was a commercial failure. As the story goes (and I have no idea if this is true), Hiramoto was so fed up with good manga failing, he set out to create the trashiest thing he could image as an act of rebellion. Prison School was a worldwide hit.

The Japanese manga and anime industry is, just like any entertainment industry out there, aimed at selling entertainment. And just like anywhere else, stuff that appeals to the lowest common denominator appears to have the greatest chance of succeeding. But once in a while there are creators who have the means and guts to take a risk and do things right.

I'm more interested in how they're developed as characters. You know, with well developed personalities and character arcs and such.

Sure, it would be nice if a world is populated by more than 1 kind of women and 1 kind of men, with random unrealistic hair color and styles added up for good measure, because otherwise it is impossible to distinguish 2 different characters. It would also be good if they can draw different bodies for people that are 13 and people that are 30, since now the only way to distinguish them is by referencing their occupation.

I mean, if they want to do as they are doing now, because it is easier, sellable and jerkable, its their prerogative... but it speaks lowly of their art form when they are more concerned with toys that world building.

You're just not looking in the right places. There's a few hentai artists who draws their girls bigger. Kato Hayabusa and Methonium draw their girls pretty T H I C C. "Nice to Meat you" and it's sequel "Just Meat to you" are two of my favorite hentai comics. Even the story's sweet (guy connects with a girl he had a crush on in HS after 10 years and it turns out she's become an introvert because she's gained weight, but he doesn't care because he's always loved her personality).

I suppose that would be an improvement. Sure, why not...?

The voices are what really tend to push me away though. A typical scenario for me is, I see footage on Youtube with a commenter and think, "Hmmm... I like the look of this." Then I watch it and all the "kawaii" voices make me turn the volume way down and eventually turn it off. Some slightly deeper, more mature voices would be great. I suspect that a huge chunk of Japan probably disagrees with me there, though, so I'm not holding my breath.

I've noticed this with the Dutch-dubbed cartoons I used to watch as a kid and see the original American clips later, so many girls have these squealy voices while the Dutch versions are voiced by grown ass women using their regular voices.
Totally spies is the first example that springs to mind, even though that one is of French production.

If it's speaking to them on some level, clearly.

Anime's not being very damn subtle about it though.

Ballad of Evil Tonya. Need I say more?
Sage of Tanya the Evil is quite literally not the Third Reich and not WWII though. Why? Because it is pretty much literally the Imperial German Empire around the WWI-era. There are a handful of technological advances to late 1930s/early 1940s levels but geopolitically, in terms of ethos and tactically its entirely parallel to the 1910s.

Smithnikov said:
And how comically inept everyone EXCEPT the Empire is at warfare. I had to shut it off at seeing infantrymen firing on mages for the umpteenth time and having the balls to look surprised when their bullets do nothing. Again.
Sounds a bit like you're referring to the Dakia parts a little before half way through. Dakia is a parallel to 1910s Romania and is pretty explicitly supposed to be a couple of DECADES of military development behind any of the other nations.

In the anime the Empire fights only three other nations outright. And concentrates their efforts on defeating them one at a time. Dakia (as mentioned above), the Legadonia Federation (aka Legadonia Entente Alliance) which is the equivalent of a grouping of Norway, Sweden, Greenland and Finland, and the Republic which is equivalent to France. There are some skirmishes also with 'volunteers' from the Allied Kingdom (the UK) but its fairly explicit that none of the AK, the Unified States (i.e. the USA) or the Russy Federation (i.e. Russian Empire and, later in the war, Soviet Russia) are actively getting involved as yet. Both of the former are supplying the Empire's enemies and the AK is providing some military support (in the form of intelligence and volunteer troops on occasion) but that's it.

In short? The World War hasn't actually properly kicked off for most of the anime and it is individually stronger than any of the three it fights (in two cases much stronger). Instead the Empire is throwing its weight around and trying to become the biggest nation in Europe. At risk of providing spoilers: World War I DOES kick off at the very end of it. Fairly explicitly. I won't give more details for the sake of anyone else reading.

The character that's the heroine of the story, yes.
Protagonist =/= hero/heroine. Not all stories are the same, and not all stories have their focal character being a good, or even likeable, person.

Light Yagami is the protagonist of Death Note. He's a murderer with a god complex. He's a villain, but still the protagonist.

Alucard is one of the protagonists of Hellsing. He's an absolute vicious bloodthirsty monster. Given that his opponents are even worse you might charitably raise him up to be classed as an anti-hero...but he's not a hero.

Hell, Spec Ops: The Line used this as the focal point of the entire game. "Do you feel like a hero yet?" And yet, your character is still the protagonist.

Tanya is, by any measure, a violent, self-obsessed, egotistical, maniacal monster whose every move is a cynical calculation to advance her own position and she cares very little for literally anyone else. Or did you miss the part in the very first episode where she deliberately sent two subordinates to somewhere she knew they would be killed because they were guilty of insubordination in her eyes?

The (totally not German) Empire are brilliant strategists, honorable soldiers, have the cute Moe girls, and are not only possessed of technical and tactical acumen, but GOD IT'SELF blesses their prototype weapons to work beyond their expectations.

If my eyes rolled any harder, they'd have fallen out of my head.
For one: again, not Nazis. Wrong era parallel.

For two: they are fighting two relatively unsupported and objectively inferior enemies and one which comes somewhat closer to their own capabilities. And they pick them off one-by-one. The first enemy they beat is Dakia, as above it is decades out of date technologically and tactically and has no mages of its own. The second the Legadonia Entente which has somewhat more foreign support (in the form of imported supplies and small amounts of intelligence personnel and mages); they beat this nation through a surprise attack through a heavily defended area, only made possible by Tanya's unit taking out the defenses in a lightning strike. Tanya's unit consisting entirely of hand-picked mages put through absolutely brutal training by Tanya herself and thus being superior to basically any unit that could be fielded against them. The third is the Republic which they beat by drawing the Republic troops forward into a trap and then severing their lines of command by using Tanya's unit again combined with experimental rocket technology.

Most of these strategic plans involved Tanya or her ideas. Which are a direct result of her retained knowledge about the parallel WWI from her previous life in another world. Which is something of an advantage strategically, hence why they tended to do fairly well.

As far as God "blessing" their weapons...if you really think that then you have entirely missed the point of that entire aspect of the series. So its probably best that you stopped watching honestly, because without understanding this its a waste of time to watch.

The core point of the series is the antagonistic relationship between Tanya and "Being X"/God. She has only been reborn in an attempt to make her bow down to X's power. To do this, X is manipulating everything around her in order to put her into a situation where she has no other option but to truly put her absolute faith in God; which she refuses to do so.

I'm assuming that what you're specifically referring to is the prototype computation jewel that she was ordered to test. In that case she was unhappy with it in the extreme after repeated tests and refused to do more as it was dangerous to push it any further. As a result X manipulated the lead engineer on the project to make him FORCE her to go up one more time and then push to the jewel to overload. Then he came to her and basically offered that she could either die (and subsequently have her soul go to hell) or to have faith and pray for help and it would be "graciously" granted by X and she would be saved.

She ended up giving in on this point, and praying for help, and lo-and-behold X stabilised the jewel for her. But from now on if she ever wants to use it to its full capacity she must pray to God to allow her to do so (or it'll explode and kill her).

Its got absolutely nothing to do with God/X helping the Empire and EVERYTHING to do with X's obsession to get Tanya to bow to its will. For the same reason X later inspires and empowers other people in an attempt to either kill Tanya or get her to pray for help and put more faith in it.
