as i am always mobile i decided tog et a decent laptop for gaming, it has served me well and plays everything ive thrown at it so far from med to high setting. my only prob is my cooling, as it is a laptop all i can do is get a cooling pad and hope for the best, which i do. oh well it suits my needs until i am able to get a pc when i settle down and not in college.

Don't know if it counts but the monitor. I bought it 6 or 7 years ago when there was still a debate over flat screen vs. tube, and this was one of the best in it's day. All the rest of my computer has been replaced twice over but the monitor has always done everything asked of it that I'm finding myself having troubles parting from it.

It has trouble powering back up after going into sleep mode which suggests to me a power supply issue, so the end is probably nigh.

My PSU the original gave up really fast, I think it was faulty, so I swapped the one out of my old PC into it. Works fine but its definately the worst part. I'm getting a new PC soon anyways.

Oh and the monitor is lol too It's tiny and I got it from Aldi...:|
Getting a massive one with my new pc can't wait.

I'd say my computers weakest link is the video card. Seeing as it is entirely imaginary and does not actually exist in the computer.

but you should be backing up the important stuff anyway, and if the drive with the OS fails, then games still won't work till you reinstall.
I don't know what this obsession is with living in fear of hard drive failure, it's never happened to me, and I enjoy a significant performance boost, not too much for a 32 gig ubs or blank dvd disks. if the critical files you can't reinstall exceed that then maby you should be running a RAID 1+0 array.

RAID fixes everything.
I do backup, I have about 6TB of backed up data. That's not the issue, I was just pointing out that you now have twice the failure rate compared to having just one drive(maybe not exactly, but thereabouts) and lose all your data vs just losing half with two separate drives.

Anyway I admit I've never had a drive fail me personally either, but we all know it happens, and I've seen it happen to others. I also change drives semi regularly, which would ruin a raid setup and require a mass purchase of new drives rather than the gradual upgrade process I go through now.

The speed advantage is minor too, my PC boots up fast enough. Yes it would boot faster and load times would decrease but you're very rarely going to get any extra fps in games.

RAID is great for some, it's NOT for everyone though.
I don't seem to get when people say raid doubles the fault rate really, I figure each drive is sharing half the burden, so it all works out. then again, im not an expert. Perhaps some know better then me?

My graphics card. Everything else works fine, but it's that friggin' Intel HD integrated graphics that brings the whole package down to about 10 FPS.

In a few months, I'll be getting a new laptop, which my college gives to every new student that attends there. It should be able to run most of the latest stuff, but we'll see.

I bought an ATI graphics card. It has these horrible drivers. My screen will just freeze and sound keeps going in the background. My mouse cursor still moves. It's pretty weird.
Meh this only happened to me during ME2. And ME 2 turned out to be the cause.
Actually come to think of it, it could be my page pool memory.

My video card. My laptop has 3 or 4 gb of memeory (can't remember at the moment), a strong dual core (2.8 ghz), and a 256 mb video card. Whoever designed it is a dummy.

My motherboard, it's on the way out, also my RAM at the moment i'm down to a mismatched set of DDR2 (2GB, and 1 GB with different speeds) after one of my OCZ 2GB modules died.

Everything else blasts modern games and software out of the water with its horsepower.

Yeah my old Toshiba was still sporting 512mb RAM lol and a 1.7ghz single core Centrino. I couldnt even play Half Life 2 without crippling lag. I upped the RAM to 1 gig. But then it overheated and died about 2 years ago. It had a nice run of about 5 years. Then I bought a Gateway FX laptop with 4 gig RAM and 360 gig HDD,Nvidea GeForce 9800M GTS with 1gig RAM after it died. The processor is still a bit sluggish. its a Dual Core 2.27 Ghz. But for a 2 year old laptop im still very happy with it.
Reading this its crazy how fast these things go. Some people curse consoles for holding platforms like PC back, personally, im almost glad because otherwise everyone would end up having to buy a completely new PC once a year. Not to long ago a dual core 2.27 ghz was crazy high end. Now, you can be glad if you can even start games like Bad Company 2 without the processor shitting itself and shutting down or burning.
laptops are not generally known for great power sir, part of how they make them fit on your lap.

The Hard Drive - I need to upgrade it...

It's only a laptop, but it can run The Witcher 2 on High settings and Crysis on Ultra without a hitch. Don't reckon I'll be upgrading for at least another 4 years.

Well I finally got Crysis 2 now that they have the Ultra detail DX11 patch out. I didn't play much just the intro bit (it was late) but it ran steadily over 50 FPS at max settings so I think I'm good. Metro 2033 and original Crysis (and every other game I've tried) also all play very well.

Although if I had to pick a weakest link it would probably be either that my SSD is only 80gb or that I don't have the GPU horsepower for 3D or triple monitors (with max settings).

good topic. sound is my issue. this dell is from 2001 .... 2001! but it's still in fine condition. i don't play anything intensive on it, my real gaming machine is my toshiba qosmio laptop, but as my lady's machine just pooped out she has been using it and i've been looking up components to a new machine.

Probably not my processor, a 6 core, 2.8 gig AMD. Probably either my RAM (4 gigs DDR3 1800) or video card (GeForce 260 GTX) If someone wanted to enlighten me as to which could use an upgrade first, Id be interested to know.

I don't game on my laptop, but I'll partake anyway.

My current laptop is a mess. The keyboard doesn't work, it is literally coming apart at the seams, the internet is slow and buggy, and the memory capacity isn't worth shit. Practically all I can do reliably on it is play DVDs. This laptop is about two years old.

My old laptop, an eight year old Toshiba, is where I do most of my work. All that it can't do is reliably play movies, everything else on it works fine or better than my two year old laptop. Yeah, the utterly obsolete laptop I replaced because it was running a lot slower than it used to still runs better than the new one.

Never buying a Packerd Bell again, I'll tell you that much...
