As much as I love SoulCalibur, I would go for Street Fighter, as it is the very first fighting game I've ever played in my life.

I dunno, I like Soul Calibur (or used to) because of the close-up, brutal weapon-fighting with knights and martial artists, but I think if I played Guilty Gear or BlazBlue those would probably be my favourite. Smash Bros. should be up there too, although it isn't a proper fighting game it is pretty good, I rather like it.
Bloody Roar is kind of fun, as a series, but I've never ever liked Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter. Too little variation, too much emphasis on "balance" rather than fun, and the characters just being boring. Then again, they were the early ones, but I'm annoyed they didn't evolve in any way since they first came out.

Oh yeah, DBZ was a fun fighting game as well, since in all of them you have the option to BLOW UP THE WORLD and then keep on fighting. Although it is difficult to persuade your opponent not to do so for shits and giggles.

Touhou 12.3 Hisoutensoku.
Fast paced 2D fighter. Really easy to learn and has several unique features such as Grazing (dashing through enemy projectiles harmlessly) make it my favourite fighting game.

Tekken. I played 3 when I was pretty young, so there's always been that pinch of nostalgia with it.
Never really liked it past 4 though. 4 had amazing arenas. The mall and the car park and that roof one... wish I could find that game again...
I'm not sure how much better the gameplay is compared to the others though, never played 'em. I'm pretty sure they all involve sticking to one guy and learning all their moves.

I have to agree with this. Though i havent played Continuum shift yet... But if it is half as good as Calamity Trigger...Heck it will still be a good game. And i like Vs games as much as i love Blazblue. I want my Marvel Vs. Capcom NOW!Dango said:
I like Soul Calibur and Tekken but i mostly play that with friends that wants a variety on the roster and more characters. And i like Street fighter games to...But not my friends so it ends up with me playing all by myself.

Tekken, cos it's always been my favourite. Favourite characters, moves, it's one of by beloved series, and I don't belove that much
VF4:Evo was the only VF I actually spent much time with too. I loved me some Lion and Sarah.. though that's pretty much par for the course as I always seem to enjoy the pokey annoying deceptive characters and, when available, the taekwondo users.gamer_parent said:
As much as I do enjoy DOA, I really do feel the way holds/counters were handled in the first game to be the best. True counters were done much like they are in other fighters, and not all characters had them, but the standard holds were just quick momentum shifts.. sort of a smack your hand or foot away instead of a grab and joint break. It made an already fast paced game even faster but the holds weren't as game flow interrupting.
Bloody Roar is a lot like Sega's Fighting Vipers, if you ever played that, except you build up a gauge and can turn into an anthropomorphic version of your character when it gets high enough. Very fast paced and string combo oriented, plus one of the earlier 3D fighters to make heavy use of walls (it may have been second only to Fighting Vipers in that regard). It's actually a surprisingly solid fighter. If you're going to check it out, I'd suggest going with the first one in the series as it pretty quickly devolved into a gimmick fest after that.
