Poll: Your "Pet" Genre?

Hm is Just Cause worth playing on the PC? I remember borrowing playing Just Cause 2 at a friends place for a while only to realise that the game had been crippled by consolisation: a lock-on feature was garnered mandatory because aiming with the mouse had a full-second delay; and the gimmicky double-weapon wield seemed obtrusive and unnecessary. Didn't go down well for me.

JRPGs and Platformers (damn, that one didn't even make the list...)

Both are a dying breed, sadly.

Jak's gone, Rayman's out playing with his rabbits, nobody even knows who Ty is anymore, Vexx never got a second chance and neither did Psychonauts, they fucked up Spyro and then moved the gang-bang over to Crash Bandicoot's place. All we got left is Nintendo, with Mario remaking SMB3 for the hundredth time and Kirby with its ridiculously easy copy/paste formula - then Ratchet goes 4-player co-op and some fresh meat tries their hands at Sly Raccoon. All the while, we're being run over by shooters about zombies and modern warfare...

And don't get me started on JRPGs, I remember days of Chrono Trigger, FF I to X, Legend Of Legaia, Shadow Hearts, Breath Of Fire and Jade Cocoon... These days, the only ones who seem to be able to cook up a decent JRPG are Atlus and Tri-Ace.

Economic strategy. I'm in deep passionate love with Tropico 3 right now, although I never really forgot Pharaoh, with its golden shimmering hair and incredible... economic strategyness. Or Railroad Tycoon 2. Because it was freaking Railroad Tycoon 2.

funny you should mention Tropico, I was thinking about getting Tropico Reloaded(or something, the pack for the first Tropico) would it hold up well compared to other newer sims?

Mucho Macho. It's still pretty fun, but it just isn't as good as Tropico 2, which just isn't as good as Tropico 3. Tropico two is different from 1 and 3 in that it's about pirates instead of the Banana Republic, but personally I'd pass on the first two and just grab Tropico 3 if your machine can handle it.

Basically, Tropico 3 is the first Tropico, except with cars, instant-build roads, better pacing, tons of tweaks (all of which improve on the original), and two epic DJs. Try the demo. If your computer can't take it, but you still want a Banana Republic simulator, the first is still worth twenty bucks or so.

FPS. I've only seen one other person list this one so far, and he said he liked WRPG's a bit better. So I feel like a bit of a loner here .

I can take solace in the fact that I like at least one game from pretty much every genre imaginable except sports and text based adventures, but when it comes down to picking a genre I love to make other things die from a first person perspective. With a gun.

That made me sound a bit sadistic, didn't it?

I think its just that people dont see it as a genre, for example Fallout 3 was an FPS, but I classify that as an RPG

FPS is most definitely a genre. It's just not really a favorite around here.

Fallout 3 takes tons of inspiration from FPS games but ultimately it's more RPG, which is why it's considered an RPG.

I just tend to classify CoD and BF under the genre of "Action" so I didn't think I would need to make it a standalone genre

Tactical level Turn Based Strategy/RPG style games. Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics, Final Fantasy Tactics, Luminous Arc, X-Com, and the Heroes of Might and Magic series.

Of course, I don't have a problem with semi-tactical turn based RPG games either. I'm a big fan of the Ultima series and Persona.

Games like that are what I lean towards.

For me it's puzzle-platformers. Especially those, but platformers in general would do. Or even games with platforming elements, as long as I'm grooving through the air, racking my grey matter.
I'm thinking Portal and Braid here specifically, but basically the Mario games and Prince of Persia are pretty fun to play (blimey, I can't wait for Limbo to come out for PC-users). But games like Bionic Commando, Just Cause 2 and Assassin's Creed, which would otherwise be extremely bland, come alive simply because you can jump about and swing on stuff and fly through the air; awesome! It kind of gives you the feeling that you're floating over the scenery, you know?
My second choice is shooters, since, and you might have guessed it by now, I like to use (reflexive) skill and intellegence side by side to complete video games. You have more to do, so the experience becomes more intense. So yeah... Bionic Commando, Just Cause 2 again. If you combine that platforming with some old-school firing action you can get some pretty amazing experiences. (That's the same reason I like playing Scout and Soldier in TF2; you just get to jump about the place performing the most stunning of stunts.)

What is that one genre of games you find yourself utterly and totally in love with? And what games are your favourite for this genre, and what games are you excited for within this genre? For me its WRPG, I eagerly await Skyrim and loved Oblivion.

I also have a bit of a gripe about your separation of JRPGs and WRPGs. I understand that they have some rather different formats and that considering your choice you might not want have been mistaken liking all types of RPGs, but come on!
Surely JRPGs are not so different from other kinds of RPGs that they get a separate vote and platformers do not. If you're going to coop up all the different kinds of shooters in with action games, then surely you could have done that with the RPG genre.
Or what about Action-Adventure? That's just a hybrid between two of your other posted genres, not to mention that you did not specify Adventure games to only be "point-and-click" adventure games.
And what about sandboxes? Did you hypothesise that sports games are played more than sandboxes are?
I just think this poll isn't very representative of genres in general.

I said WRPG, but it is more of a fascination with sandbox games. I love the GTA series, Elder Scrolls, Just Cause, Saints Row, etc. Ultima Online was one of my first sandbox experiences and I spent a huge portion of my life playing it.

I haven't played the first one on PC, but I don't think my opinion would matter with you because I actually like the second one on PC a lot. It isn't as responsive as an average PC shooter, but the scenery and the uniqueness of the grappling hook thing are just awesome to me. I also like that I can blow all kinds of shit up.

Maybe sports, but baseball only, specifically the MLB series on the Playstation. It's the only sport I like, and it is the only sports game I like. I will pour hundreds of hours into those MLB games. I can finally bring the White Sox back to their 2005 glory every year.

I was a fan of the 2005 season as well. Except for a major difference...I am an Astros fan. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

1. I wanted to see which branch of the RPG was more popular, without wanting to start some sort of flame war
2. I classify sandboxes and shooters as more of a game mechanic, example, Fallout 3 has a sandbox world and first person shooting
3. Action-Adventure is that very weird hybrid genre, apparently some people use it, as evidenced by the fact that 17 people have voted for it (I guess they were voting for the likes of Drakes Uncharted and Lara Croft)
4. Some WRPG fans really don't like JRPGs, conversely some JRPG fans really don't like WRPGs, it was just my attempt at addressing that issue
