Maybe you should read what I actually said. I was merely correcting your example of a use of irony; something unexpected is only ironic when it is opposite to what you would expect. The fact that you think an oxymoron is the opposite of something just confirms that you don't know what you're talking about and this is a pointless discussion.mrx19869 said:ok yeah you are just as right as i am. i know about irony. there are different types, verbal, situational and so on. part of being ironic isnt just being the opposite , because that wouldn't be ironic.. it would just be the opposite. or an oxymoron
maybe you should read your own link...
WRONG!mrx19869 said:for something to be "ironic" it has to be unexpected.
You have an amazingly bad understanding of what irony is.mrx19869 said:this is a horrible example. it does not apply. what is ironic about a pornstar moving to a place called virgin. its not ironic because its soo obvious. so try againAngerwing said:What this guy said. It's not just unexpected. Your example is wrong.factualsquirrel said:Irony has nothing to do with being unexpected, it's to do with being against the entire point.mrx19869 said:for something to be "ironic" it has to be unexpected.
"I think that it's ironic that this thread could do with a poll...."
its not ironic because its a thread about why polls are annoying. it was pretty obvious that there wouldnt be a poll attached.
this is an example of ironic
a woman from NY city moves to LA to find a husband, she meets a man and they get married, it turns out that he just moved from the same part of NY city also..
this is ironic because. the reader would not expect or predict that the person she marries was also from NY..
Your example is not ironic, it's surprising, it would be ironic if she had moved away because there were no good guys there.
One example I like to use is this: If a porn star moved to Gangbang, Ohio, that wouldn't be ironic. If she moved to Virgin, Mississippi, however, it would be.
I'm going to go with the crowd and correct you on thatmrx19869 said:for something to be "ironic" it has to be unexpected.
