When used properly they can be useful. Granted it's annoying when a user creates a poll just because she wants more attention.

ok yeah you are just as right as i am. i know about irony. there are different types, verbal, situational and so on. part of being ironic isnt just being the opposite , because that wouldn't be ironic.. it would just be the opposite. or an oxymoron

maybe you should read your own link...
Maybe you should read what I actually said. I was merely correcting your example of a use of irony; something unexpected is only ironic when it is opposite to what you would expect. The fact that you think an oxymoron is the opposite of something just confirms that you don't know what you're talking about and this is a pointless discussion.

I'll just go back to writing my essay for my English Literature course now. Kthx.

I have to agree with those saying this thread needs a poll. Polls allow quick input of opinion and keeps a tally of how many people share that opinion for those curious without forcing people to look through the entire thread. If people want to argue their opinion, they still can.

WRONG!

Irony is where the actions of a person causes an outcome that contradicts with his/her intentions. e.g:
If someone's argument against polls causes people to believe that polls are beneficial, that would be irony;
If someone moves to LA to find a husband and they find a husband, that is the complete opposite of irony.

Well, that's situational irony anyway since, to me (and amongst those I've noticed go up in arms over its abuse), it is the 'true' irony due to the other types have more specific names. I still struggle to see how your example fits into any of these vague definitions though, rather than just being 'coincidence'.

Polls aren't inherently stupid. They are a tool. However, like any tool, they can be used incorrectly. I've seen some pretty stupid, pointless polls pop up here. However, a thread doesn't have to have a poll to be stupid & pointless.

This debate of whether something is ironic or not reminds me so much of that episode of Red vs. Blue where the Reds debate with the Blues about the very same thing.

"I think that it's ironic that this thread could do with a poll...."

its not ironic because its a thread about why polls are annoying. it was pretty obvious that there wouldnt be a poll attached.

this is an example of ironic

a woman from NY city moves to LA to find a husband, she meets a man and they get married, it turns out that he just moved from the same part of NY city also..

this is ironic because. the reader would not expect or predict that the person she marries was also from NY..
Irony has nothing to do with being unexpected, it's to do with being against the entire point.

Your example is not ironic, it's surprising, it would be ironic if she had moved away because there were no good guys there.
What this guy said. It's not just unexpected. Your example is wrong.

One example I like to use is this: If a porn star moved to Gangbang, Ohio, that wouldn't be ironic. If she moved to Virgin, Mississippi, however, it would be.
this is a horrible example. it does not apply. what is ironic about a pornstar moving to a place called virgin. its not ironic because its soo obvious. so try again
You have an amazingly bad understanding of what irony is.

Edit: I realise we've quite a ways off-topic here.

I think a poll is good only if it's an addition to a regular topic. If the thread centres around the poll then it's pretty lame, but if it's a regular thread that encourages discussion, but also has a poll, then it's a good poll.

Polls are people too!

Just because they don't speak English very well does not mean that they should get their own subforum!

I'm going to go with the crowd and correct you on that

For example, Michael Atkinson's (Maccy A) policies on video games that were designed to stop violent video games getting into the hands of children by getting rid of an 18s rating therefore causing most 18s games being 15s?

[HEADING=1]Ironic![/HEADING][small]also hilarious[/small]

Edit: If someone was squeaky and annoying started to give out about squeaky and annoying people?

This thread would be much better if there was a poll to gauge people's opinions.

I always used my polling powers for good. That is, if you found the time to sift through my posts, you'd probably find my poll-related threads being entirely used for purposes of funny, which is a worthy cause in anyone's light.
