Wait, haven't Valve said before that they don't like to spend money on things such as TV advertisements because they prefer to market through word-of-mouth and having players recommend their games?
Not quite, they said they were tired of dealing with advertising agencies that keep screwing them over and taking their money.

I really would love to play portal. Ive never played the original, but i might buy it for PC, or pre-order portal2 and get a free copy of portal1 with it.
This trailer makes me want to play it even more, and with the constant recommendations i get for this game, i want it more and more.

Very well-done, outlining the basics of how portals work for newcomers, but the best part is its utter lack of commentary on whether or not your mother will like it.
Interestingly, I bet my mother WOULD like it. Which INCREASES the potential of my purchase (which was already at 98% or so).

This is a delightful, if somewhat underwhelming, ad. It's nice that VALVe knows what they're doing with the game and how to market it, though I find it odd how they're focusing on the 2-player co-op mainly.
Remember that this is primarily a campaign for those who might not even know what Portal is. It's a lot easier to advertise "you can have fun with science, with your friends, as cute robots!" than "it's a dark and brooding single-player science-fiction experience with ounces of pitch-black humour, and gameplay that WILL explode your head at least twice".

For general audiences, the whole couch-play co-op thing will be the biggest draw. For us who are awaiting a sequel to Portal, we already know it's single-player will be the natural extension of Portal's.

I lol'd. I mean, I quite enjoyed the silliness that was Dead Space 2's campaign, but it was so badly judged for the market it was aiming for. Perhaps a "Your Mum hasn't heard of this game" campaign would work - none of the controversy, but plenty of head-scratching bemusement ^_^

Watched the ad, was wondering what Valve would come up with..

I think they nailed it :D
Indeed mr.Snowman it is a good commercial ;)

Now which one is which? I like the small round one :3
That would be Atlas.
Really? I was not prepared for that...

The logic, it has all been reversed now...
i think its like p-body= Peabody which is an actual name that sound British and high class, and p-body does have a more sophisticated nature about him.

Oh man guys, Portal 2 isn't just going to be just normal video game fun. Oh no, it'll be fun, with SCIENCE!

...Wait, I hope GLaDOS is telling the truth and it's not religious or magical fun.

Yeah, they nailed it. Seem to have applied the same concepts that they used in the first hour or so of the first Portal.

I thought that ad looked a little rubbish and freakish. I think maybe it appeals to the fans more than outsiders, despite what the person in the article says.

It wasn't anything as like as good as the original advert for Portal 1. Now that was mind blowing even to outsiders :D

Y'know, it's really NOT focusing on the multiplayer co-op to people who haven't followed the hype. What they see is two funny little robots playing with portals. If I have one complaint, it's that they didn't show gameplay. It's easy to make something seem clever and exciting, but new players don't know that the game really IS clever and exciting.

They made it appear clever and exciting, and justifiably so, mission accomplished. The idea of the TV spot is to get people interested in the game, and showing off how portals work does that nicely. You can't really show gameplay past that without going over the time limit. If they're interested, they'll discover the fascinating gameplay soon enough and get hooked.

Also, P-Body is totally Luigi.

I'm having... shortness of breath... I haven't let myself get excited for a game since Brawl, a full-on three years ago...

It's not the only thing they are focusing on. If there was one thing that has convinced me to buy Portal 2, it would be this video.

This ad broadens the base of potential customers like younger gamers, so its a smart move. Also cute.
