I just signed up here so I could reply to this dead thread. Lol. I wanted to defend myself in the heated discussions that took place.
The one line that I say to everyone related to this speedrun is, "Can I be the only person to think after beating the game, "I wonder if you can connect the start of the level to the end of the level with portals... wouldn't that be the fastest way to beat it?" So, to that end, I figured out a way."
It took 2 years because I actually have a life. My career is in software testing, so this kind of stuff isn't new to me. I wanted to show off the potential of the game and the portal gun, while beating it as fast as I could. There really is no need to have a philosophical discussion of what is a glitch and what is not a glitch, or if glitches should be accepted. It is a game. Get over it.
I wanted this to also be a exposé of why software testers need to exist. You need people to spend time finding stuff like this because it can hinder the quality of the game. The biggest example of how a game gets ruined by glitches is Left 4 Dead in my opinion. They fixed a good number of glitches for it, but there are way too many, in both 1 and 2. It isn't fun when people can just run through the level and ignore the events, or in L4D1 how you can move really fast as a crouched hunter. This is an example of an online multiplayer game.
For a single player game, unless the glitches hinder a normal player (like the Zelda TP save glitch that didn't allow you to advance in the game), then it doesn't matter as much. It would only serve to fuel enthusiasts like me. They are STILL FINDING new glitches in Super Mario 64 or Zelda 64. It amazes me.
If you think of my speedrun as a 'sham' or 'not legit', then think of how scientists figured out that taking atoms and smashing them into each other would create a bomb. You aren't supposed to use atoms that way... meaning, they are usually used to create and not destroy; but as humans, we always are trying new things. I do not believe anyone has the right to shun me for my efforts used to make that video.
Oh, by the way, I'm working on the singing, so if you didn't enjoy it, my bad.
