I have been watching the previews and trailers for the movies The Watchmen and Push. Now correct me if I am wrong but are these movies just a star wars and a batman movie just without the marvel rights? And George Lucas rights?
Correct me if I am wrong but here I go
Push has the same styled crap as the force and has the same basic story line from what i see just this time the Jedi are hated and trying to be recruited for evil deeds of some sort.
The Watchmen, from what I have seen, their heroes look very familiar to those in the other actual hero movies, batman wolverine, ect

What you guys think?

the character's in Watchmen look familiar because they're supposed to remind you of classic comic characters, and in fact at one point they were going to use actual established comic book heroes like Blue Beetle and Captain Atom... but, they lost the rights at the last minute, and had to fabricate facsimiles that could stand in for them, but use to tell the same story...

if you've not read the book, please withhold judgment about the characters and story until you've done so... much will be explained, and you'll see that it's not just a simple knock-off...

Ummmm didn't hear about Push, was that the one with Anakin?

And watchmen is totally different from other comics, more cynical, more realistic. Truly in Watchmen there is only 1 real SUPERhero, Dr. Manhattan, who is like Superman, but if superman was bored with humanity, and every chick he knocks up gets cancer.
Nite owl is like Batman whose given up on crime.

Rosarch is like the punisher without a gun, whose also a super detective

Oyzmandias is Dr. Doom, who wants to bring world peace.

And last but not least is the Silk Spectre, who is wonder woman who has no powers, and is struggling to be normal(in my opinion).

opps, forgot the comedian

The Comedian, a captain America who represents a more cynical look on America.

Well firstly Batman is DC, not Marvel. Wolverine however is. The Watchmen also came from DC so... yeah there will be similarities. I have never heard of Push so I can't comment.

Also I haven't read the comics either so I can't really comment on the similarities, only in terms of cinematic themes. Yes, they're similar but it's just a recent trend in the movie industry making what seems replica after replica. There always will be and always has been trends within cinema, this is just a modern example.

You have just opened up a huge Watchmen can of worms that will spark much passion on the subject from the escapists. Just a heads up.

...
my thoughts exactly.... i tried to distill my commentary into only what was necessary to explain the Watchmen premise to a total neophyte...

I'm sorry, but do even know ANYTHING about Watchmen?

And Push didn't strike me as a Star Wars rip-off. It seemed more like Heroes the Movie.

...because the X-men (as well as other Marvel and DC creations) and heroes have pretty much covered all the bases on that one...

Yeah, I'm gonna go and say you really should read The Watchmen. There's a reason why characters might remind you of classic comic characters.

On a side note, The Watchmen is part of the reason why today we're getting movies like The Dark Knight, taking the concepts of superoes thematically seriously. Another component of that is (obviously) The Dark Knight Returns.

Yeah, it's... That's missing the point pretty hard. I can't actually think of a way that you could be any more inappropriate than that. Wow. I'm actually kind of impressed.

Just wow. Seriously before you post you might want to check the wiki site on certain things. Watchmen for example.

Watchmen is the product of DC buying out Charlton Comics. Originally the concept was to give a send off to some of the Charlton characters that they couldn't use. Over time this idea morphed into strong references to current characters and it was taken in a darker direction. Watchmen is considered the firstly really "mature" superhero comic.

The point of the comic is very much to take some classic superhero archtypes and filter them through the real world. It asks if by their nature a 'superhero' is a right wing and negative thing.

Night Owl II - is actually more of a play on Blue Beetle (Charlton) than Batman, Night Owl I is obivously 60s Batman. He is the millionaire playboy archtype.

Rorscharch - is I think (if I remember correctly) half Mr A and Question (Charlton). The conspiracy theorists with fedora. This is more of a throw back to the pulp detective heroes who were overly violent and aggressive.

Dr Manhattan - Superman's political impact and Captain Atom (Charlton) themes.

The Comedian - Not actually sure who the Charlton equivalent is but certainly an influential character. Hell he seems to have more in common with the Joker than any hero (seeing everything as a joke). An obvious comment on right-wing pro-American characters like old style Captain America but brutally subverted.

---

Also Batman and Watchmen are both own by DC, not Marvel.

ARGH! I hope I haven't just been trolled.

EDIT: Watchmen is 1986-87 and slightly pre-dates The Dark Knight Returns wherein Batman gets his major re-shift back to darkness.

I totally geek-raged on that. I feel so embarrassed but I bet that's how a lot of non-comic book fans see it. 5% of the potential audience are either excited or terrified at a Watchmen movie, 95% think it looks like a cheap Batman/Xmen rip off.
