There goes the fanboys "it's free" argument.
not really becuase we pay for extra stuff while XBL charges for basic stuff.
And that isn't a real argument because it's still lower than any MMO's monthly rate. Unfortunately it's all the irrational have left seeing as how it's been proven patently false that there aren't a bunch of teenage idiots on PSN as well.

If I am going to buy this, it better be cheaper than XBL as the box had pretty much all of this from launch and the PS3's biggest feature was it's free online acess.

Hmm, pretty good features. As long as they let me play online for free, then it's cool.

This premium membership dealie sounds more like something in addition to online, not instead of it.

I'm still behind it.

I'm still not happy about this subscription stuff... why not give it to us for free as they always have??? Sure they will make money out of it but customers sure won't be happy about it, its a bad marketing strategy, considering how they've been bragging about their online being free all this time...
Exactly. Its as if Sony are contradicting themselves. It wont be very small discounts on the store either Ill bet. Just sounds pointless for all ps3 players.

However I do like the idea of the User to User challenges. That'll be a good thing for competing with friends.
If its not obvious then you two truly are PS3 fanboys, its because Sony isn't profiting enough off the PS3.

I am a PS3 fanboy, Ill admit it but one of the main reason for moving from 360 to PS3 was that I could not get on XBL because of the cost. If I have to stop playing PSN now because of the price, Ill be left without any multiplayer capacities on any of my consoles. Except the Wii but nobody plays Wii online. :p

Quite an interesting features list, let's work our way through the important bits!

Free Access to PSOne Classics, PSP Minis, and PS3/PSP Themes
Wait? ... FREE PS1 games? I'll buy them all. I love the ps1

Discounts on Store Content
Not really, if you buy a lot then maybe it'll work out cheaper, but I'm guessing most people will find that the discounts don't match up to the price of the subscription

Trophy Alerts
Do non-payers not get Trophies now?

Automatic Downloads and Updates
I'm guessing this means everyone without a subscription doesn't get this. Delayed updates? This does not bode well for multiplayer games

Facebook Connectivity
Uhh, what are they gonna do? Censor the browser

Catch-up TV
Isn't the reason that 360 can't have BBC iPlayer because they wanted to only give it to paying customers?

Well, if done right, then those features could be pretty nifty to have and may have a justifiable subscription price.

Though I still don't get why people really want Cross game chat, sure it's a cool feature, but I don't really see a use for it. Especially since hardly anyone on PSN uses a headset to make use out of that feature anyway, but what evs.
Funny, everyone I speak to on the PS3 has a mic...
Also in every game I play online recently I have to mute four or five people just to be able to hear my friends tell me when someone is sneaking up on me.

That's not bad marketing, its necessary for PS3's survival. Sony sold many more units this year and especially this holiday season. There's significantly many more units out there than there were before when PSN was completley free. Sony can't support such a big population of PS3s free on the PSN. Whenever you produce more units of a product, the costs to maintain a status quo rise exponentially.

Two big factors are at play here, and they have nothing to do with marketing, fans, or the games themselves. This is simple economics at play here. The Law of Diminishing Returns is why Sony isn't making as much profit as it would like (that and the fact that companies produce and sell consoles at a loss and only make money on the games, accessories and premium services). And The Law of Increasing Costs is why Sony can't afford to give the same content it gave to the smaller PSN community of a few years ago to the new PSN community of today or a few years from now.

Its pretty much all because Sony finally sold well and their PSN community became too big to keep free. Its not necessarily a bad thing though, especially since they're keeping online gaming free. But I never really play any online games on my PS3 either, I prefer the online on my 360 (better multilayer games IMO). I mostly use my PS3 for the few great exclusive titles (MGS, LBP,Uncharted, FFXIII when it comes out). The Wii is for parties and fun. And my PC is for Steam. Got 'em all and love 'em all :p

i did read it
and let me explain the first post
RUNESCAPE
that should just about cover it...
oh all right then ill explain a bit more, if you have played runescape you will no doubt know that its a grindfest, but a fun grindfest at that, the only thing taking away the fun is the "premium content" areas like the desert, jungle and frozen northern lands which you are asked to pay for every time you breathe near them
can you imagine when that happens too the PS3 network?
it wont happen immediatly, it probably wont happen in the next few months, but by this time next year i think you will find yourself more and more tempted (or forced via adverts or peer pressure) to start handing over some cash because enough of the "other people" have handed over cash to make sony think its a good idea to give the good stuff too the people willing to pay for the goods and not just pass it around to everyone
and the only way to get rid of the pressure to go premium is to leave runescape, delete it, bin it and set fire too the bin...

I dunno, I guess it's just personal experience, but usually I rarely meet someone with a mic. For example, I played the MAG beta recently and even though there are over 126 people in one company,4 platoons of 32, and 4 squads within those platoons with 8 players each squad, I have never had a squad, platoon, or Company leader that had a mic. Or if they did have a mic, they hardly used it to their benefit. Not to mention that many times I would be the only one in my squad who had a mic, and even though I was qualified for squad leader position, I never got the position despite me having a mic.

For me, I might have to mute 1 or 2 people every couple dozen or so inbetween a few games. Compared to what I've heard on LIVE (having to mute someone every single online game), I'd have to say that not many people on PSN have mics, at least compared to LIVE, which I suppose is a tad biased since every 360 console comes with a headset.

Members Only In-game Content? That basically translates to "pay for online features" which translates to "pay for multiplayer."

So in the end, PSN is going XBL. Well, I can't say that I didn't see that one coming.

So much bullshit disguised as text. Those "premium content areas" you talk about are called DLC (short form for downloadable content), have never been out for free, and aren't part of the discussion here.

Also: It's cool how many fucking times you can write down that this list is purely hypothetical and nothing but rumour and still about 80% of the readers see this as fact and complain/are happy about it.
