This kind of thing wouldn't happen if there were stricter laws in the UK regarding 'knife control'.

(snicker!)

Seriously. Someone in this equation was a titch irrational.
More than one someone, at that. Still, the judge could have gotten away with calling it murder; nobody stabs some guy a hundred-odd times in self defence. Once, maybe. Twice... possible. Get caught up in the heat of the moment, etcetera.

Ah well, Darwinism strikes again - provided neither of them were fathers.

since when was stabbing a man to death manslaughter.

manslaughter, on the other hand, requires a lack of any prior intention to kill or create a deadly situation. - Wikipedia

pretty sure a knife strapped to the door and chasing him into the bathroom, plus 104 injuries makes it murder.

Although the sentence was less than 160 characters, obviously, the sentence will be a long one.

...nutter seems to be quite the appropriate word here.

And are some of you seriously arguing that there aren't significant rights to self defence when someone got off on manslaughter for stabbing a man and then HUNTING HIM DOWN AND KILLING HIM WHILE HE RAN AWAY?

For the record, that's murder in almost any US court.
ALMOST any US court? Are you telling us theres a state in America where this kind of thing is not treated as murder?! What do you have to do in such a state to receive a murder charge?

Yeah, even if the victim showed up at his door with a chainsaw and hockey mask, 104 knife attacks and pursuing the injured victim makes this neither self defense nor manslaughter, not by any stretch of the imagination.

I'd have thought it would have happened because of an autocorrect to "shiv" but oh well.

Jesus fuck that's stupid.
Especially as there is almost no difference between either word in terms of insult value. They are really mild words.
106 inuries, then he followed him up the stairs to finish him off? Fuck manslaughter, that's cold-blooded murder.
104 actually. But seriously. The dude that got insulted also died? Really?! 104 stabbings is nuts!

To think the guy spent atleast a minute and 44 seconds stabbing, slashing, and god knows what else (going at one injury a second minimum), how the fuck do you clear him of murder? And man-slaughter is just second degrre murder

Over 100 injury's and it's not murder?

Someone got trolled hard in court and I think its the "victims" family. Dude deserves a murder sentence.

The court was told that Witkowski suffered 104 injuries, including stab wounds, cuts, bruises and slice marks on his hands.
Im thinking theres more here than a text misunderstanding...
Yeah, this story doesn't make sense, and it sounds to me like an Ambush. Some people DO conceal weapons in their home in case of a home invasion, however that's done as a matter of regular behavior as opposed to something "prepared" in a situation like this. To me it sounds like the guy was lured to the house and ambushed, especially with the way he was pursued and assaulted that many times.

Also, for those wondering why this is on "The Escapist" it's relevent as it's an issue involving interactive social media. Things like cellphones are increasingly becoming tied in to video games and the like. A lot of things mentioned here are covered because they involve social media. Consider also that the way this went down it could also have happened between any two people who knew each other, interacting electronically. Say a killing over a misunderstanding caused by a world filter in an MMORPG or whatever.

With all the stupid things that can be filtered in DCUO (and no way of turning it off) there have already been a lot of misunderstandings and WTF moments (which have lead to a lot of humor). It takes some real insanity for soemthing to snowball this far, and even so I'm hardly buying this one at face value, but this catalyst could have been a lot of differant things.

English is not my main language, mind you, but honestly I didn't know there was a difference between murder and manslaughter. Just learned something, I guess!

Wow that's so far-fetched, but totally believable. But really man stabbing the guy, over a spelling error...Captain Picard if you would be so kind.

It wouldn't have ended there, self defence laws in the UK are not like the US, if you hypothetically beat someone up who comes into your house with a knife, you're a lot more likely to recieve a harsher sentence, even if you didn't use a weapon, if you draw even the smallest amount of blood, ie, you punch him in the nose and he gets a nosebleed, you'll probably be arrested and probably face jailtime

The only time you're truly allowed to defend yourself is if someone was to come into your bedroom

Pretty stupid I know, but our government believes they can stop gangs by banning certain colours...
All governments are run by people who don't live in the real world, this isn't unique to our lovely island.

Uh...
Look, I think I'd actually be more offended to be called a mutter. I'm not sure what really brought on this attack, but it was inevitable if something like that set him off.
