360. It just feels better. The PS3 controller often hurts my hands, which is my main problem, but the 360 controller is heavier and feels more reliable.

I really don't like either;

D-pad: convenient position in so much that I can press it with my right thumb while my left thumb is busy with the respective thumb stick, but the D-pad itself is fucking diabolically shit. it's so easy to press into the wrong direction, even if you are pressing the right part.

Sticks: tight and responsive but ultimately modern controls sticks are incapable of the accuracy that I expect after PC, the concave top is appreciated on the right stick for aiming, but is not appreciated on the left stick that is usually pushed all the way forwards. I put and FPS control FREEK extension on the right thumb stick of both my PS3 and 360 gamepads, but not the left stick, I leave that bare.

Face buttons: slightly crisper on PS3 but for both I hate how they are positioned. Games these days basically need your thumbs on both thumbsticks constantly, which kinda makes the Face buttons like the num-pad, you can't use them at the same time as looking around.

Shape: both are a compromise. I kinda lie Six-axis because it is so light (never cared about rumble) and the motion-sensing is handy in some games. The palm grips are generally too small
I use the WIRED xbox 360 gamepad for removing the hassle over charging, less worries over input latency and also to remove that fucking battery block.
Triggers on both are terrible. It is an insult to gunsmiths to call such squidgy levers "triggers" and on PS3 the concave snap-on triggers are a necessity. Though when used they actually turn out to be slightly better than 360 triggers.

I've recently had to play through COD4 on an xbox 360 and after breezing through on PC with mouse aim, killing the enemy with such speed and efficiency I'm going to be charged with war crimes, 360 is as frustrating as herding cats. Console version blatantly turned down the difficulty but still its such a fucking chore to aim, I can't stand it.

I've lost so much faith in gamepads being good for anything, even thumbstick for movement. I've found it harder to be as dexterous with a thumbstick for movemenet as take sidestepping left and right very quickly. Easy on PC, just alternate hold of A and D keys, you can switch direction INSTANTLY. With a gamepad that you have that fraction of a second rolling from full left to full right and back again.

I've come into this problem more and more on consoles as I try to emulate the speed and precision of my mouse aim on PC. It takes nothing for me to change the direction I am moving my aim, if I overshoot I can correct by just contracting a muscle to begin pulling the mouse the opposite direction. But with a thumbstick I have to CAREFULLY recentre the stick if I overshoot, then push the stick in the opposite direction. I think there is something to be said for Goldeneye/timesplitters style aiming.

I prefer the PS3 controller, mostly just because that's what I'm used to. I do like the D-Pad better, as well as using R1 for shooting rather than the 360's triggers.

I also like the analog sticks better, but that's just a matter of opinion. I like how they seem looser, and easier to move, compared to the 360's, which makes it hard for me to aim accurately in Halo when I'm at my friend's house.

So in conclusion; the PS3 controller.

we went over this in a old thread months ago, and i do believe you were either put on probation or stopped responding, especially with the amount of replies i think you were getting over it, and i'm about to head off to work, so i am not going to sit here and pointlessly argue with you over it, like i had said in my original post.

and just to point out, the majority of people have been saying the 360 controller, im not saying the ps3 controller is bad, especially considering i used to game solely on the ps2 growing up.
Look at every controller that isn't a 360 controller. Each one uses symmetrical analog sticks. Nintendo tried with the GameCube, they went back with the Classic Controllers. The OnLive Microconsole was initially planned with staggered sticks, but they changed the design for the final release. For years, despite the DreamCast and Xbox controllers having the higher left analog stick, any PC gamepad always made use of the DualShock design. The 360 controller is the odd one out here, and the people who like it are also people who like playing FPS games with a gamepad, which is just silly.
why are you so blatantly attacking the controller/my opinion? which in that, i never said that non symmetrical joysticks were better, never once did i say that or even assume that, so i have no idea what that rant was about right there.

like i said we had this discussion long ago and I'm not going to sit here and try and reason with you when your so dead set on making yourself superior to anyone who prefers the 360 controller, which is a majority of the people on this thread.

oh and also, nearly everyone i know loves the game cube controllers, in fact we have about 12 of them laying around the house so when we play super smash or mario kart we have those at the ready.

Personal preference goes to the 360 controller

Buttons are bigger and pop out more, which allows you to more easily feel your way around the controller
It has real triggers that are comfortable to rest your fingers on
It's big enough for an adult to hold
The analog sticks slope inward instead of outward, preventing slipping.

Both are the same to me, both feel the same, can do perfom the same way on either, I don't have to adjust to either.

Grab a PS3 one, then grab a 360 and decide which you like more. Most people prefer (what I call) the baby 360.

(I call it that 'cos babies stuff is oversized and chunky, due to there dexterity not being great)
well gee, you didn't have to be a fanboy about this.

OT: ive tried both extensively (since i owned a PS1 and PS2 before i ever got an xbox) and the 360 feels more natural, comfortable, and just overall better when playing games than the playstation controllers (mainly because the buttons don't feel very responsive as compared to an Xbox controller)

EDIT: its mostly because of those concave thumbsticks rather than the convex ones. they seem to have much better control, and most people (that i've seen) spend extra money trying to get their controllers to be more like xbox controllers, so might as well get an xbox one

Now I love the Dualshock 1&2 but the new PS3 controller has my fingers on R2/L2 sliding off. Plus 360 feels heavier.

a thousand times the 360 controller. After having the analog stick moved from point A to B.. Everything else seems so illogical. So much so that this is my prefered PS3 controller.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16879995094&cm_re=dreamgear_shadow_6-_-79-995-094-_-Product

And yes, I agree that the 360 gamepad is more logical for PC simply due to the extensive support for games circa 2007 and up. Foreverything else.. theres Xpadder.

OT: while im thinking about it, I really dislike how , at least on the DS3 controllers, that if you set the controller down it has a tendency to hit one of the trigger buttons, (L2/R2)

Here's the deal folks, I'm looking for a new game pad for my PC, namely for some older games of mine that the ol' Keyboard & Mouse combo aren't the most efficient way of playing (or comfortable after 15-20 minutes for that matter). That said I'm debating on purchasing either a PS3 or Xbox360 pad as a) They come off as better designed and field tested than the average PC made one, and b) I've read enough on getting them to work in different OS environments so that's not an issue for me.

What I need help with is a few opinions on the pros/cons of each controller as I'm kind of at an even split between the two for what I'm looking for, and that I haven't really touched either that much to begin with (Note: I own neither console and can't be really arsed to buy one anyway, so comments to that respect please). I'm thinking the Xbox would be handier for racers and space sims (without paying extra for a full steering wheel or joystick/throttle combo), where the PS3 would edge out on older arcade titles or platformers as the dpad seems a little better placed.

So, seeing as I can get either one for about the same price, what are your thoughts?

(Thought of doing this like a poll, but I'm looking more for proper argument than just controller popularity to be honest)
Personally, I prefer the PS3 controller. It feels more natural in my hands, and i like the classic black design. 360 comes off as too fat and heavy in my opinion, but to every man his own.

I prefer the placement of the joysticks on the xbox controller. It's kinda clunky to use the joystick with the PS3 controller, and a joystick is always a better control method. As for the general feel, I have large hands, so I find it easier to use the 360 controller. It just fits better. The tradeoff is that my hands sometimes cramp up when I'm using the 360 controller. I haven't used a PS3 controller for 6+ hours straight, so I wouldn't know how it compares in that regard, but I can't recommend playing a game that long. Honestly, if your hand starts cramping, get up and do something else.

Although I still prefer the gamecube controller. It was a little clunky, and the trigger buttons always gave me trouble, but the button placement was just perfect. I could keep my thumb on the A button, and roll it around to hit everything else.

On another slightly related note, don't use a wii controller for a long time. Those things are painful. Seriously, if you play for 2-3 hours, your hands will be cramping and on fire for the next few days. And don't get me started on the original DS. It had an edge that would leave marks on my hands and cut blood supply off. Nintendo did not think about ergonomics when they made this gen's controllers.

PS3. The PS controller has worked for so long that there was literally a single design change made to it over 15 years to make it closer to it's inferior competitor, and it's only noticably annoying because it's not the button of old. Yeah, the Xbox one has better triggers, but you can buy add-ons to make it more like a real trigger, and it even flattens out at the bottom so it almost wraps around half your finger, and I prefer the more uniform press of the Playstations shoulders, as oppposed to the clicks and triggers of the Xbox.

That's actually the best part of the Playstation controller, uniformity. Besides Start and select, the entire thing is almost symetrical. Two sticks, side by side, same size. A 4 way D-pad, and four buttons, here renamed with gemoetric shapes to avoid the confusion of the letters in it'e predecessor, the SNES controller. The only reason the R/L2 buttons on the PS3 controller are a bit of an annoyance is because it changes the old uniformity of all the shoulder buttons. Still, it works really well, and, as always, the close, simplsitic layout allows for smooth control and various possiblities.

The Xbox controller, by comparison (the original), is a mess. It's huge, it uses letters, but not the old SNES layout, instead of the top shoulder buttons it had the white and black, and the sticks were on a diagnol, as opposed to horizontal layout. In fact, virtually every change made to the 360 controller made it more similar to it's competitor.

So, I see that some people believe the PS3 controller is too smaller. Heh, well I believe that the PS3 controller is well-shaped to the hands and highly-intuitive to the finger placement.

But in reality, I can't believe we're quibbling over this. FLIP A COIN! That's the only difference.

Xbox controller works better for shooters
Ps3 controller works better for plat-formers and action games.

I like shooters more so i like the xbox controller... but both work excellent for any game.

Playstation because it's what I grew up with but they really need to make a bigger variant of it because It's way too small.

360. I can use either one, but the PS3 controller feels especially small and those marshmallow shoulder triggers don't make anything easier.

I would definitely go with the 360 one. I've never liked the Playstation controllers.
