I also agree just seems like an action game with rpg sprinkled on top.
Which, as Mass Effect has proven, can be extremely successful and an excellent game.

I still consider Mass Effect an RPG, but it definitely has a lot of action-game influence and I'm hard pressed to find that a bad thing.

But how much of it is it's own success and how much is riding off Mass Effect 1. All I know is I played ME1 many times and have not touched LOTSB or overlord. How many got Mass Effect 2 just to see where the story went. Come feed me that line after Mass Effct 3.

The real problem is that business about the content not being available after Jan 11. It's like they're holding a gun to the content's head and saying "Give us your money now, or the content gets it."

Hmmm? You've lost me.

ME1 and ME2 are both RPG's in my mind, neither one more or less than the other. Mass Effect 2 is an easy contender for Game of the Year for me, and it was a phenomenal continuation of the trilogy. If Mass Effect 3 is anything like the previous two, though more refined, then I'll be tempted to call it one of the best trilogies of all time.

everything I've seen so far on Dragon Age 2 looks like they are just messing up the series. I'd like to see more gameplay before deciding to buy it.

Thats really a disappointment to me, I really liked the first one. Bioware has been making awesome stuff and I'd hate to see them fumble this.
I have to say, the only way to "mess up" a story, is if you have a completely new set of writers, it would be if JRR Tolkien wrote The Fellowship, the Two Towers, then let someone else write Return of The King without any of his input. As far as I am concerned, they have every right to do what they want with it, and if it ends up destroying the IP, oh well. It's kind of like what Bungie did with Reach, they changed what was in the books, because it was their story.

It seems that the usual suspects are already taking pre-orders in the UK, if the GamesTracker page [http://www.gamestracker.com/buy-dragon-age-2-compare-prices-pc.htm] is anything to go by.

two things preventing me from getting it.

A: Amazon.ca doesn't have dragon age up for pre-order yet.
B: Will there be a collectors edition?

Looked into it, it seems this IS the collectors edition.

Still waiting on amazon.ca though.

Edit again: got it from the EA store instead. TAKE MY MONEY! TAKE IT NOW!

I suppose it's possible that this is the Collector's Edition, although that would be kind of a letdown; as a Signature Edition it's great, but I really expect more from my Collector's Editions.
Really? Because bonus content-wise it sure sounds like the average Collector's Edition, and I'm not going to complain if a pre-order automatically bumps me up to a collector's edition.

I can tell you from personal experience that the first few missions in Mass Effect 2 I was like...

"HOLY SHIT! Finally! No more pounding at the enemy with the same 'BAMF BAMF BAMF' sound effect only to have them spam their immunity or whatever and make it take even longer than it'd normally take. Finally, an RPG that actually feels like a shooter too!"

I liked ME1 for its story and setting a lot. But its combat system was something that seriously needed a rework, especially considering how ridiculously easy it was to spam all your biotics towards the end and instapwn anything you wanted on insanity. Or to provide an example, in no other shooter/RPG before it could you do something as utterly awesome as this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2aac5okUJU

So yeah...it really *was* a good move on their part.

As for Dragon Age 2...I liked DA:O and the reason for that is probably since I wasn't expecting a vast departure from traditional fantasy tropes. If I've learned anything about Bioware's style of storytelling it is that they don't depart from the mainstream too far (like for example other, less known developers do in RPGs), but they always put their own spin on it - that was something that I wanted to see and to be frank I liked their take. I also liked it because, while it wasn't the oldschool 90s RPG, it still required you to do a lot of min-maxing, theorycrafting, getting the right gear together, ect. And I liked the fact that the dialogue was different from Mass Effect's - since I like them taking a different approach.

But now with DA2...hrm...on the one hand I am very uncertain how the conversation wheel will hold up in this series...on the other hand I can't wait for things like characters having to move into the right spot before they can start their attack animations to be gone for good and for it to move at a somewhat faster pace...and yet again on the other hand the way they describe the story evolving almost reminds me of how Alpha Protocol's story evolved - a future discussion, talking about things happening in the past and going through it episodically...which wasn't such a bad thing, but it might seriously take away from the game's sense of 'bigness' as Yahtzee put it.

I genuinely don't know. I guess I'll see though, I'm willing to give it a go and buy it at least. But preorder it? Well...we'll see. Got some time to make that decision still...

EDIT: I will still be getting SWTOR from you guys though. You're assholes, but I needs me some Star Wars MMO goodness.
So glad to hear that you're willing to try our MMO in spite of believing that we're all apparently assholes. You're too kind.
Wait, you work for Bioware?
*Stares at glory*
OT: I like all Bioware's games, yet only recently have I discovered them (Previously being a just consol gamer) then I got an Xbox and ME. Then I downloaded KoTOR. Was yet again blown away. Then I played DA:O, safe to say I spent over 24 hours on that game. I have no doubt that they'll continue to please me. Wait... I'm a fanboy, aren't I...
Damn you Bioware!!!
Still *Goes off to preorder*
I is a fanboy too! *pre-orders Dragon Age II as well*

I'm a bit more interested in first seeing how the whole "your game saves from whatever system you played DAO 1 on will be brought into DAO 2" is going to work before I commit, even though the sig edition looks squeal-tastic.

I really want to get the PC version, but being apprehensive the first time round, and tempted by a special best buy was running at the time where I could get the game for nearly half off, and neededing SOMETHING, ANYTHING with the words "rpg" in it for my lonely, dust-collecting PS3 I foolishly bought that version.. Although to be fair, regardless of the criticism, I immensely enjoyed the game on the PS3 console. The more action-driven setup was different than I'm used to than the "start-stop" strategy style of the PC version, and was a nice change of pace.

But if I can't use my PS3 save with the PC version, then I'll probably have to sulk and opt for the ps3 version (although I wish I had gotten the Xbox 360 version if I was stuck on the consoles because I play my Xbox much more and prefer the controller to the lighter PS3 controller). Although I severely dislike this whole "It's not YOU anymore, your beloved Grey Warden is off somewhere else, instead you MUST use this new person we called Hawke because we prefer to tell a story than to give you the freedom of living out a fully immersive, personal fantasy."

I hate rpg's where I can't name the main character whatever I want. Dammit, it's a ROLE playing game. AND a fantasy. AND a virtual adventure. I want to it to be ME saving the day, not me as the puppeteer guiding some dude who mocks my beloved fantasy every time he gets into a conversation.
