PS4 vs. PC side-by-side comparison in Unreal Engine 4

One problem with this, if you can find footage of the unreal 3 engine/Gears of War tech demos before it came out you'll see that the visuals were not even remotely close. So while it's insanely impressive I'm not sure you'll see the same visual wow when it comes out. Hell if you look at screenshots of some games they're oddly at 1080p and have full AA and what not when most console games are not even full 720p they're scaled to it. Like GTA4 for the PS3, not 1080, not even 720, so we'll see what happens when the system is out and a game is actually running on it in homes.

I'm not quite sure what this is supposed to prove....

I mean, it isn't exactly BREAKING NEWS that a computer can achieve prettier graphics than a console, but then if consoles were just about graphics alone they would be expensive as shit....

so yeah......while this was definitely....intriguing I guess, still not seeing a point to it

I don't really get why there are such comparisons out there to be very honest with you. No consoles (ever) will manage to reach the power of a high end PC.

Long time PC gamers already have invested so much in their PC rig that is way over the current specs of the PS4 and I don't think they will invest in one except if maybe they are swimming in money and want to waste it.

Consoles are made for convenience for "lazy" people that don't want to bother with installing games and what not and just shove the disc in and play, which is understandable but not my style.

I am doing all of my tasks on my PC (games, surfing the net, getting the news, watching movies). Why would I bother with consoles? I can play all the games with my plug&play x360 controller if I really need to play certain games with that controller. Also I can just plug my PC to my TV if I really wanted that sort of "experience".

My 2 cents about this whole thing.

Huh. I never really noticed before just how much less the PS4 version had. :(

Oh, well. I guess that means we'll see graphics to match the PC version at the end of the PS4's lifespan?

I did notice a lot fewer particle effects in the PS4 footage, meh. As long as the graphics are good enough to get the art design across without screwing the processors, then I couldn't care less about texture details and lighting

A bit "meh", if you're surprised by difference now realize that the tech PS4 is working on is just going to be X-months-until-release older when it actually launches. And even then PCs are on the dawn on 4k gaming, I think the general estimate has been about 2 years until 4k monitors are in the affordable price range. And with the PS4/WiiU pretty much locked into 1080p, the difference is just going to grow.

So why is this news?
People often need to feel justified in their purchases.

On a side note, I actually found several scenes in there I liked better on the PS4 side. Almost anything with lava or the Horned King guy until he stepped out into the light seemed to pop better.

Am I missing something, or does the PC looking better mean that the PS4 looks like shit by default? If you're telling me that the PS4 version actually looks bad if you don't look at it in comparison, then you're crazy; if you're telling me the PS4 version doesn't look bad, then what's the problem? The reason people buy consoles is either for the exclusives or the convenience. Don't sit there and tell me that the only thing that matters in a game is graphics.

Well, that has illuminated me to two things.

There's not enough difference for me to actually care one way or another.
There are points when not having graphic superpowers apparently work better, cause I'd say about 30/70 the PS4 looked better then the "MOAR POWER" PC.

Being a fan, I came to check out the new Unreal engine. I am pleased.

Granted I'm a P.C gamer and I think consoles are the "iPhones" of the gaming world (gated marketplaces that stifle creativity and superior gameplay) compared to the "Android's" (P.Cs), but I wouldn't mind seeing this test again once the console version has been ironed out some more.

I remember back when Nintendo released a RAM upgrade module for the N64. I imagine that if consoles featured user upgradability options like that, it would (ironically) render console gaming dead.

It also may be a thing of the past. Already there are day one patches and routine updates. With the rumour of the 360's always on DRM came the rumour that the disc drive was for installation only and PS3 already had mandatory installs on some games.

This, to me, is the biggest problem the console makers have: in making their newer consoles more like PCs, they really are eliminating any real advantage. Hell, we're going to have multiple consolised PCs, which will probably end up being the better deal if any of these console rumours come to pass.

That's a nice find, but not that conclusive. Those are still tech demos, one running on a newish OS and the other probably from a much higher end graphics card.

The older UE4 demo isn't nearly as impressive as the latest one for the PC is. If you're interested in a true treat watch the below clip.

Rendered in real time with a single GTX 680

This is because the PS4 version did not have depth of field enabled.

The PC version has Depth of Field [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field] effects enabled.
It's somewhat counter-intuitive that blurry means it's harder to render but Mr Tea speaks the truth

That's what people like to point out, but the console manufacturers have spent the last half a decade moving back in a PC direction, while the PC becomes more plug and play than it used to.

I always find these side by side comparisons sickeningly biased.
Can we at least get the spec of the PC in question, as the platform "PC" can mean any computer.
For example, my laptop is a personal computer, yet I highly doubt it has the capability to run anything half this decent.
The PC in this comparison, could have been tailor made to run this particular piece of none gameplay footage to be as crisp as real life.
We won't know because we're specifically not told, we are only told "PC"

Don't fall into the trap of "oh look this particular piece of prerendered cinematic is slightly better on a custom built PC with enough power to render a 1:1 scale model of the universe, than it is on PS4. THE PS4 IS INFERIOR BECAUSE THIS VIDEO SAID SO"
Or in short, 3rd party tech demos employing obvious marketing strategies to make your mind up for you.

I could go on about the how biased and unfair this comparison is, but, I really don't care, I'd much rather waste your time by getting you to read my rants.

Going to go play some xbox now.

PC is great and all but it does not have sony 1st party games, and art style is what i look for in a game when it comes to graphics, is crysis 3 at max settings better looking than journey? its comparing apples and oranges, and if your only playing games for graphics your missing out on alot of great games
