Not sure about the exact tech terms, but previous Final Fantasys had that isometric world map thing which passed for 3-D on the SNES. I can't really comment on other games of the time, as I was a staunch Nintendo fanboy then. You're right about the game's scope, but a game with apparently much more depth (FF Tactics) came out a few months later but never got a fanbase on the same scale, and I fancy that even if it had come out before, it never would have been the huge event FFVII was. Not sure what I'm trying to prove here, as I agree with your general points in your retaliation to the "die in a fire" guy. I suppose I'm just being pedantic.Khell_Sennet said:At the time, yes. But looking at the progression, it was that FF7 was the first FF game to go from sprites to 3D-renders, AND feature 3D landscapes again instead of flat 2D maps. Then the cut-scenes were gravy on top of it all. But even when new, the graphics of FF7 were not up to par with other Playstation games, simply due to its immense size. Armored Core or Spyro were 30-hour games on one disc. FF7 had much MUCH more gametime, and 3 discs to boot.
I love the game, but imo it was a major landmark rather than the pinnacle of PSX gaming.
