ps1 for sure ... n64 was nice.. but only for a few titles... also there was a hand full of them you could get on the ps1 as well .... Sony is superior on this front

PS1, without question. Had Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, Tactics, Chronicles, Origins, Anthology...
Oh and Legend of Dragoon, Metal Gear Solid, Star Ocean The Second Story, Chrono Cross... I think I'll stop there. But I still have others.

The n64 carried alot of the "Its good because its 3d!!!" crap games but I cant help but feel like it carried alot more classics than the ps1.

For me it has to be the PS1, mostly because it was the one I owned and I rarely managed to get ahold of a N64 to play it, as all my friends seems to have joined me with the PS1. Good memories though from Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy etc.

Ps1 for me, played NES and SNES my whole early childhood and then jumped ship to playstation. Well, didn't really have a say in it for I got it as a christmas present with Spyro 2. Those were the days... No one seems to have put Medievils in here. They rock. Crash Bandicoots, Spyros, Tekkens, Final Fantasies. Those made my childhood. Got Ps2 with Kingdom Hearts, again, for christmas, oh and Tekken 4. Oh and Legend of Dragoon rocks too. Just the ones I remember from the top of my head that had real impact on me are listed here.
Goes without saying that all those games from playstation catalogue written here have a place in my heart. I've tried N64, Dreamcast and Xbox consoles. They all have their gems but Playstation is my console. With NES/SNES. Many fond memories from PC as well. Never understood the console wars and such, I just enjoy the games from as many platforms as possible.
If I started writing here about world peace I would be taking this too far.
Got a bit carried away here.
Bottom line: PS1 over N64, but I love 'em all.

n64 had better graphics and the first analog controller, but ps1 had the better format that allowed cd quality audio, larger games and cutscenes.

We're talking about the SYSTEMS, not games. Hardware, not which had more gran turismo's and Final Fantasy's or Zelda's and Goldeneye's.

Hardware without games to back it up is useless. Take the PS3 for example. For a while it didn't really have anything too spectacular despite being a really well made system.
On that note, I really can't comment on the PS1/N64 era of gaming because I never owned either of those systems growing up. I was too busy playing PC games. :D

Topic title: "PSOne vs. N64: Which was the better system?" Not which is the better platform to game on.
Good games are relative. Hardware specs are not as relative. you can like n64 more than sega dreamcast, doesn't change the fact dreamcast blows it away, even if it did have much fewer good games.

And once again, hardware is useless without games. Look at the very first post of this thread. Tthe OP was talking about the games released for each system and their overall quality.

You seem to be just arguing for the sake of arguing at this point.

PS1 did more for gaming as a whole and overall had a better lineup. I hated the N64 controllers but it had several gems like Conker's Bad Fur Day, No Mercy and Goldeneye.
I agree that it did more for gaming in the sense that it brought gaming forward as a commercialised medium and broadened the fanbase (along with having one of the best controllers of all time alongside the SNES and GC pad), but in my opinion it didn't have as many noteworthy classics as the N64 did. For every one on the PS0ne I could probably name 2 or 3 for the N64.

PS1

Crash Bandicoot... ooooooooooooh yes
Tekken... still going strong

they were my first 2 games, I still play them on my PS2 because I am too cheap to buy a new console.

I'm seeking lively debate, but flaming will be reported. So tear apart the systems all you like but please refrain from attacking posters. 'kay?

I wonder if all that fog would have been abated/eliminated had Nintendo (wisely) decided to go to disc with the '64. Aside from that, the system embodied the first real jump into 3D and the first console to have real 3D FPS's. What's a real 3D FPS, you ask? Why, it's one where an enemy or a tree actually has a back and 2 sides and a top and isn't a paper cutout like in Doom (much love), and there are actually different levels so you're not just constantly turning right or left.

My problem with the PSOne is that it never seemed to generate many good games, not even many 3D games even though it existed in the era of 3D. The developers could have capitalized upon the N64's shortcomings and really pushed gaming forward (like dozens of PS-TWO games did), but instead they focused on churning out the world's first big batch of shovelwear for the world's first casual gaming machine.

Remember, the shields are up :) I love you all.
wait what??? ps1 didnt generate good games...

there is a good reason why the ps2 was the most hyped console of my memory, it was because the ps1 had settled itself in and bought out piles of very very good games.

I admit i was a fan of the N64, but really in my house we had both so it didnt matter a whole lot.

I still have some ps1 games laying around I play now and then XD

Games, much like the systems themselves, are a matter of personal preference really. However, more franchises got their start on PS1.

Retrospective vs thread, hell yeah!

N64 was my poison, it got me into videogaming. And while the PS1 had some damn good games, none were in the area of the Legendary N64 ones like Perfect Dark, Mario 64, Conkers Bad Fur Day or the one game to rule them all, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time.

Also, I still play the N64 as much as I used to when it came out, and it still works perfectly after surviving 12 years and having fallen out the back of a moving car.
This.
Played both, liked 64 better.
And it still survived, many of my friends Ps1's have bit the dust but my 64 survives!
Even with all the Super Smash Bros. abuse it gets. :p

IM not arguing, the title says best system and not best library.
Or else I could say the snes is a better system than the ps3 beacause it has more games rated better than the ps3 library and has more split screen multiplayer. But that would be crazy. Maybe you can say the games are better, you like it more and it helped expand the gaming market more than the ps3 did but it's not the better system. And I didn't even say which of the 2 consoles was better, only the strengths of each.

No more arguing you guyz!

Since the N64 is the thing that got me into gaming and since I never owned a PS1 I'm going to say the N64 was better.
