PS1 did more for gaming as a whole and overall had a better lineup. I hated the N64 controllers but it had several gems like Conker's Bad Fur Day, No Mercy and Goldeneye.
I agree that it did more for gaming in the sense that it brought gaming forward as a commercialised medium and broadened the fanbase (along with having one of the best controllers of all time alongside the SNES and GC pad), but in my opinion it didn't have as many noteworthy classics as the N64 did. For every one on the PS0ne I could probably name 2 or 3 for the N64.
Games, much like the systems themselves, are a matter of personal preference really. However, more franchises got their start on PS1.
Indeed they are a matter of personal preference, so it's opinion vs opinion on this one, I believe that's what the OP wanted.

And yes more franchises did get started on the PS1, there were more games in general. The PS1 can be compared to the NES in that regard (first console for company, franchise starter).

And once again, hardware is useless without games. Look at the very first post of this thread. Tthe OP was talking about the games released for each system and their overall quality.

You seem to be just arguing for the sake of arguing at this point.
IM not arguing, the title says best system and not best library.
Or else I could say the snes is a better system than the ps3 beacause it has more games rated better than the ps3 library and has more split screen multiplayer. But that would be crazy. Maybe you can say the games are better, you like it more and it helped expand the gaming market more than the ps3 did but it's not the better system. And I didn't even say which of the 2 consoles was better, only the strengths of each.

I wonder if all that fog would have been abated/eliminated had Nintendo (wisely) decided to go to disc with the '64. Aside from that, the system embodied the first real jump into 3D and the first console to have real 3D FPS's. What's a real 3D FPS, you ask? Why, it's one where an enemy or a tree actually has a back and 2 sides and a top and isn't a paper cutout like in Doom (much love), and there are actually different levels so you're not just constantly turning right or left.

My problem with the PSOne is that it never seemed to generate many good games, not even many 3D games even though it existed in the era of 3D. The developers could have capitalized upon the N64's shortcomings and really pushed gaming forward (like dozens of PS-TWO games did), but instead they focused on churning out the world's first big batch of shovelwear for the world's first casual gaming machine.
Oh look, the OP was all about the merits of the hardware and the issues with the game library from a specific console generation.

Enjoy your fail.

In terms of ratio of quality games vs. mediocre/crap games, the PSX wins IMO.

However, in terms of influencing future games and gaming consoles, the N64 actually trumps the PSX (Goldeneye being the first quality FPS designed for consoles, the Analogue Stick as a standard on game controllers, fully showing off the potential of 3D gaming, etc.).

I love my N64, Majora's Mask (my favorite game of all time), Perfect Dark, Hybrid Heaven(give yourself a treat if you remember this game), Jet Force Gemini, and Paper Mario are what seal it for me, sure looking back I cannot fathom how I was able to use those controllers but I still love those games today.

PS1 on the other hand was a system I underestimated but I also found plenty to love there such as Strider 2, Syphon Filter, and my favorite of the PS1, Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Plus I think its amazing how the controller is still used to this day on Sony's PS3 with only a few alterations.

Ultimately, I think I'll have to go with the N64.

PS1: FF VII-IX, Resident Evil series, Crash Bandicoot, Soul Edge (the original Soul Calibur), Abe's Oddyssey (or however it's spelled), Tomb Raider (when it was actually a neat game still) etc.

N64: Perfect Dark, Mariokart, Goldeneye, Zelda

Winner? PS1. More games in more genres to pick from. Plus, I could take my PS1 games with me when I got a PS2.

I'm going to say this without trying to be mean. I had both the N64 and PS1 (though the PS1 came later) and ultimately I can say that while the PS1 had the right idea going with disc-based media, I found N64's games to be a bit better, I wasn't really a fan of the ultra-pixelated look of the PS1's graphics. Not that it ruined my enjoyment of it or anything, I just feel like the PS1 really isn't all that was cracked up to be and it wasn't until the PS2 that Sony really got things right.

For comparision, here are the games for each I remember best I guess

PS1: Mega Man Legends, Mega Man 8, Xenogears, Ehrgeiz (I did play FFVII but it was the PC version so it doesn't count here)
N64: Blast Corps, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, WWF No Mercy, Super Mario 64, Starfox 64, Rogue Squadron

Way to address my points. I guess then the NES is superior to the ps3. Cause the vijeogamez define the system. When the 360 first launched, the atari 2600 was suprerior to it thanks to its diverse catalog of awesome games, right?

This discussion amuses me. I wish to hear more of your replies.

Except you have nothing to discuss. The thread is about the merits of the PS1 vs the N64. You're just taking the argument into an extreme after realizing that you were wrong just so you can feel like you actually have some ground to stand on (which you don't). For this to be an actual discussion, both of us have to have legitimate points. You're just an idiot.

N64 had a ton of good games but also a ton of really, really shitty ports.

The PS1 was full of good franchises, and started even more amazing franchises (Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Parasite Eve, Gelerians, Tony Hawk, Metal Gear Solid, etc)

If I remember correctly, Sony and Nintendo were working on a disc-based console and for reasons I forget, Sony backed out and developed it for themselves. I also remember reading in a GamePro mag that Square ditched Nintendo and went to Sony as some kind of "fuck you" to them, which is why there hasn't been an FF on a Nintendo console until late into the Gamecube's (lol, Dolphin) life.

well i can only really see the N64 winning this since it's pretty much a fanboy console, however for me nothing beats the ps1, it's still the console i play the most

PSX all the way for me! I loved it so much, and, despite not having much to do with the N64, when I did start to play it, I was too entralled with my PSX to really give it a second look.

Will say thsi though. Goldeneye, Best. FPS. Ever

I am tossing my vote to the N64 for one reason only. It still works. Back in the good old cartridge days consoles like the N64 had very reliable hardware. I can't count the number of times I have dropped the console, stepped on a game with boots, and other usually damaging acts. And yet, every single game I have for the N64 works 99% of the time in the console. Goldeneye being the only one to ever fail, and that has only happened once for me. Both consoles have wonderful games, but only one still let's me play it today. Time to go play some more Jet Force Gemini!
