Im attending DTU in Denmark.. Nothing is blocked. They do however, check what you are downloading. A classmate of mine, had his WiFi blocked, because the idiot was downloading Call of Duty 4 via torrent -.-

Is that like a mile stone for a site? To be blocked from institutions housing it's primary demographic? I feel like it should be.

To the OP, may I ask what other site's are blocked from your school network? Do they block Penny Arcade? Or maybe Machinima.com? What about Gamespot, RoosterTeeth or IGN?

OT: I had a shitty high school with a shitty lab. It introduced me to Doom LAN multiplayer in 2006 though, so I can't be too mad at it ;)

I wouldn't mind having facebook blocked at school. Maybe certain students here would actually listen to the teacher then. Our school has computers in virtually every classroom, and everyone logs on to facebook the instant log on their computer.

But no, they don't block anything. All sites are open for use.

We don't even have internets that we can use for anything else than supervised studies here..

But, uh, if we did have internet access during lessons, I think censoring the most popular sites, like Facebook, may be a good idea. As most of the people here can't even keep their hands away from their cellphones.

Don't know what to say about using the internet on school computers during break.

How many of you attend a high school with internet connectivity with blocks and censors on websites such as (For example) Facebook, YouTube, or this site The Escapist? What are your opinions about it.

I'm in a high school where The Escapist is blocked. I'm using 3G from my phone to connect.
Fuck this makes me feel old. When I was at school there was no youtube or facebook. In fact I never actually used the internet until my final year of school (the late 90's was not a golden age for the internet, at least not for me.)

As for my opinion on it I can see both sides. On the one hand I can see the argument school perhaps isn't the time to mess about on facebook nor is that the first priority for my taxes to fund procrastination. On the other hand some people may not have internet access outside of school (If they can't afford a home computer they may well not have a 3G phone) and I think schools should try and aleviate alienation though ensuring all people can access sites such as facebook that are a part of peoples lives.

I discovered the escapist after I left sixth form, so I'm not sure if this particualr site was blocked but I imagine so. You could still find plenty of unfiltered webcomics, sites and flash games to kill time and really for the most part it was beneficial to keep you focused on the work. However, it also hindered my ability to conduct Historical research when they filtered articles on totalitarian figureheads, kind of annoying.
It's gotten even worse now. I'm about to go into sixth form, and absolutely everything is banned. You've got to go to the far out reaches of the internet to find any games, although I did start the trend of bringing them in on flash drives in my school. As for web comics, and the escapist, blocked!

My high school blocks any site that are not run by the council. They just check everyone's browser history and block every site they find.

I'm on the tail end of High School education, and we have/had blocks on most of the websites you'd expect, including the ones you mentioned.

My old school used to block almost every site that they hadn't thoroughly checked first to make sure they agreed with or at least didn't say anything against the schools teachings of christianity... religious schools sucked.

It's not that bad with me. Still there are too many limitations.
Have some spare time? Well lets play an internet game.
Answer of my school's system: NO!
Why? Because we didn't install java.
Ok let do something like uuhm... Put GTA San Andreas on a USB stick and play it at school.
(why not)
Answer: NO!
Why? We didn't install DirectX 9.0c

All with all enough reason to try and hack the system, at least for me.
not to hack it and screw up everything. Just for some more freedom and possibilities.

Is that so bad?

Well, trying to find sites to play shitty flash games on certainly helped fill the time during double ICT (which was essentially quadruple ICT, as I had double Business in the same morning).

Yes, my school did indeed have internet blocks.

So, you have a problem that free school computers, machines that exist for educational purposes and paid for by the education budget, can not be used for some recreational sites?

I have a school like that, but it's done way too far. You can't search for basic things, even for school work, because according to the screen that comes up when I search it in Google the Mardi Gras Festival is pornography.

My high school (I graduated almost a year ago now) had some of the worst blocking software I've ever seen (WebSense). It was bad enough that the computers they'd invested thousands of dollars in were virtually useless because you could pretty much not access any site other than Wikipedia. Then they went and spend thousands more buying a bunch of Macs (*blech*) for the art department, and promptly blocked Google from accessing images.

Of course there were ways around everything (IP's, proxies, foreign domains, etc.), but the simple fact that they spent thousands and thousands of dollars on these things and then virtually destroyed their usefulness blows my mind. But that's your average public education system for you - the students are more intelligent than the administrators.
