Nah, i go for something completely different. If its a game where appearance doesn't matter that much (single player) i just click randomize a few times until i get something i like enough, but i do pay a little more attention in MMOs.

No, I always make Cowboys. I don't know why, but if they give me a cowboy hat, and a brown leather vest, I will make a cowboy.

I always try to, but I'm distantly aware than I'm probably not creating a character who looks like myself, but an idealised image of myself.

I think we view ourselves differently to how others really see us, and it's hard to remain completely objective in a character creator, which can sometimes lead to awkwardness if someone who knows you sees your character.
I wish some game studios offered a service where you could send them head shots of yourself, and they'll objectively make a character who truly resembles you.

I've found it can be an exercise in OCD.

I started playing Dragon Age recently and spent about 2 hours creating "me", then once I'd started I realised I forgot to set the voice, so I started again.
Another 2 hours later I decided that what I thought was brown hair looked far too red, so I started again.
6 hours and a day later, I finally started playing Dragon Age Origins.

Also, interestingly, when I compared the early screen shots all 3 different versions of myself looked different...

They don't really have hair like mine without making it look bad, so if they don't have a good long hair style or at all, I'll just make some blue/grey skinned evil warlock/wizard thing.

It usually depends on the context.

In Saint's Row 2, I created a rough approximation of myself- and had a blast watching myself get murdered, and cheered when I succeeded at stuff.

But if the options are there, I prefer to play something as far removed from human as possible. Since I value uniqueness over most other aspects of gameplay, my ideal third- person experience is one where I can import a player character model of my own design.

If I wanted to see myself, I'd look in a mirror.
I play as a female in games as much as I can.

Actually, if I'm making an avatar, I have trouble making one that DOESN'T resemble me. I can't bear to make a short character, and I usually end up with black or dark brown hair. Skin tone is almost always white, eyes are blue or green and the nose is never too small. Basically, without doing it on purpose I tend to end up with a set of features that resemble me to an extent.

This, of course, doesn't apply if I'm not playing a human or human-like race (such as an elf). My Trolls, Orcs and Goblins are as varried a bunch as any other. Also, it doesn't apply to games where I can't design my avatar and in such situation I have no problems playing tanned, blonde, brown-eyed midgets... :p

Yeah, I usually do.

Even if I make a girl character though its not too hard since I look like a girl anyway.

You should make a character look like your Escapist avatar.

Weird thing is that if you take off the cat ears, make her hair long and curly, that's what I look like.

You know, if I were an anime character.

I play games to Escape from my life, why would I make my character look like me?

That and the fact that I always play a female, if it's an option.
