Soundtrack, though it's always annoyed me that normal versions don't come with this anyway, considering how easy it is to take it from the files.

Big fan of figurines to put in my liquor collection.

IO remember the day I bought the Fable 2 special edition, and that was done quite wrong. All you get was a DVD that was roughly 30 minutes long and a different game case.

It's got to be something tangible (so not an in-game item) that adds something to the gaming experience, not just a load of glossy concept art or a cute figurine to stare at at work. Something like the zone map in the Stalker special edition.

But things like that used to be part of a game's standard edition. I remember the wonderment of studying the map included with my friend's copy of Elite II.

I love art books, like the one I got with Mass Effect 2 was pretty cool. They usually include some pretty awesome concept art.

I prefer the ones where you get like a figurine or some other kind of collectable you can show off :3!
Seconded, I usually only buy a Special Edition when it contains something to decorate my room with. Be it posters, figurines or whatever. The few exceptions I have were only bought because they were as expensive as the regular versions.

Art books take a very close second place though, I'm very fond of my BioShock 2 art book.

Honourable mentions to soundtracks, but you know, with the internet...*cough*

Soundtracks and Models. If I get Doom 4, Special Edition, it better have a Cyberdemon or Pinky. If I get Silent Hill 8 speciial edition, I would like a model as that would be awesome, but a CD, oh wait... Akira's gone. The new guy better make the music good.

Yes, I too was burned by Fable 2's "Special" edition. What a ridiculius waste of time and money. Didn't help that the game was rubbish either.

Also Resident Evil 5's special edition was very similar. It included a 30 minute "making of" and a trailer for RE:Degeneration which I ALREADY OWNED ON DVD!

OT:

I really like extra bonus discs with my special editions. I like to watch the documentaries on how they made the game and see the whole process as it all comes together. I like there to be a LOT of extra content on these discs.

Halo 3's Legendary edition [footnote]No, I didn't just buy it for the Master Chief helmet replica, although it is pretty cool![/footnote] is probably the best in this regard. TWO whole discs with tonnes of extras, including all the cinematics from the first 2 games with optional audio commentaries from the creators. Epic.

Mass Effect's special edition was good too, as was Alan Wake's.

I pre-ordered Reach's special addition (not that rediculously expensive Legendary one) just to get ahold of Halsey's notebook.

I wouldn't do that for many games, but if I really love the story, I'll dish out a bit extra for some cool stuff.
Oh yes, me too! The legendary edition is so stupidly priced, I mean who is going to pay that much extra just to get a figurine of characters you don't even know you're going to like?

I never purchase the special editions. Too much money for me. If I were to buy one, I'd like the art book. Special in-game items usually come out later and have no big effect on gameplay. The soundtrack is always released later on. The art book rarely gets scans posted online, and it's damn good to have a nice book on your shelf.

I like all of those things! DAMN! My only quibble with in game items is that it needs to be some kind of cosmetic thing, if its an MMO, otherwise you're special edition cost an extra 10 bucks in game item is outdated in a week or two of playing.

I'm an artist, so I love the artbooks, generally. They give you a good idea of how characters, monsters, etc, were all designed and how they evolved throughout the creative process. That said, my favorite things with collector's editions and special editions are extra levels. Even if it's just a peasly little hidden object game, sometimes it's nice to have that little bit of extra time to faff about.

I don't buy special editions. I think it's a waste of money because I might enjoy an art book and look through it once or twice but I don't think it's worth extra money. As for special in-game items goes, I always want to play games the way they were made to be played so I don't like any cheap advantages (I refused to use the Blood Dragon armor in Mass Effect 2)

I hit "don't buy," because its most true. But that also means my favorite is 'in-game' crap. Because if its really that big of a deal, it can still be acquired. Some cheap NVGs, a helmet, or a cheap RC car with a camera on it doesn't impress me at all. It's inclusion just translates to "give us more money than you would otherwise and we'll throw in some cheap irrelevant shit that represents a small chunk of the money we opted to spend on the house's cocaine and whore pool, rather than developing the game."

Its just excess that could've translated to some more balancing and/or bug testing, but instead translates to bullshit.

In-game is the most appealing. I've gotten exclusive multiplayer characters in Bioshock 2, agent armour colours in Crackdown 2 and a Dialga stylus with Pokemon Diamond.
