Half-Life and The Elder Scrolls. They instilled in me a nameless dread of any body of water, real or digital, that I cannot see the bottom of. In any degree of murk, I am constantly convinced that some unfathomable eldritch monstrosity is lurking just beyond my sight.
And don't even get me started on the nebulae in Freelancer.

I only really remember the Water Temple from Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.

It's not that it was hard to figure out (although that does contribute), but mainly because it was frustratingly slow and required a ton of pausing to switch boots so you can sink/walk underwater or rise/swim, as well as a couple of other repetitive puzzle pieces.

It took absolutely forever, and then you had to go up against a mini-boss that I considered one of the hardest bosses in the entire game, even over the actual bosses. I may have only been a kid back then, but Dark/Shadow Link (aka mirror version of Link) was damn tricky to beat. I don't even remember how I got past him. He copies your exact same moves, but if you keep spamming attacks he'll counter you. If you use items he just dodges it. If you stab at him, he jumps on your sword like some kind of ninja, then attacks you.

I think I'll have to push some people off to fit on this bandwagon, but the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time drove me crazy. The different tunics and the different boots and the raising and lowering of the water level and gorram Shadow Link...sorry Ruto, I really don't think you were worth it. I should have gotten freaking Poseidon for putting up with that temple.

Yes people, the Water Temple was a complete ***** living in a trailer park divorced and crochity after 32 years of festering hatred for other lifeforms.

HOWEVER

It was a brilliant piece of level design, and therefore not the worst :p

Sonic, for this reason:

As soon as you hear it, a frantic panic takes over you and you cant help but scream at the TV "Gimmie some fucking bubbles!" Especially when youre stood on a bubble patch and waiting for one.

How is the Ninja Turles on the original NES not on there? With the time limit, and the seaweed of stingy death!?

The only real Water Levels I played are Super Mario Bros on the GBA and New on NDS and the Killer Croc Level in Batman.

I'll choose Batman.

Also, whats this Water Temple?

Water levels always annoy me because most of the time the gameplay is completely overhauled just for one level. Of the examples, Sonic was the worst for me. That music is specially designed to make you panic.

My Vote goes to Other, for anytime you are underwater in ANY of the Metal Slug games. My god the underwater sections are horrendously hard.

I beat the Water temple on my first try in OoT, but that damn Star Fox level.
Zelda isn't a pass/fail mission type gameplay, what exactly constitutes a "try", quitting the game over it and starting it over? Because technically, even if someone spent 30 hours in the temple figuring it out, it would technically be a "first try"

This gives me chills whenever I hear it. Truly, the underwater levels in this game were terrifying.
yep this is the one there's nothing wrong with drowning in a game but when it's this soundtrack causing you to panic you start to lose it plus I had some bad experiences with this game

The underwater section of Metal Gear Solid 2 where you have to navigate in the dark depths of a wrecked and flooded section of The Big Shell, practically blind, dodging mines, while doing an escort mission with this nerd who had next to no health and an extremely short O2 bar. Yeah that is probably one of the worst underwater levels I've ever played. Whom ever came up with the idea to only put half a dozen air pockets in a massive underwater level is extremely disturbed. That was the only level in MGS2 that I truly hated and dreaded! - END OF INEBRIATED TIRADE!
