Werner Herzog.

Look no further than Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes to see how he handles the fantastical.

Micheal Bay

Because all the Hobbit needs to be a true masterpiece is napalm, lot's and lot's of napalm.
What he said. But co-directing with Uwe Boll. So we can have HOT CHICKS running around all the napalm! And ethnic stereotypical sidekicks...

I actually voted for Steven Spielberg, but the idea of these two is strangely compelling...

I would say Peter Jackson, however I'm worried that he'll make it far too similar to LOTR trilogy. Preferably him, but I wouldn't mind someone else doing it (excepting M. Night, Michael Bay, etc.) so as to bring in some new ideas.

I'd be on board to see a Neill Blomkamp rendition of it. It actually seems to be a pretty perfect fit. He'd have the advantage of getting to work pretty closely with Peter Jackson, but we would still end up with something other than simply a 4th film.

Terry Gilliam, Frank Oz, or David Fincher. Any of these would certainly do justice to the work, while bringing something new AND interesting.

I cannot endorse the included options fully, for the following reasons:

Lynch would be interesting, if he's kept on his leash (think Dune or Elephant Man). Otherwise, Gandalf's staff gets a crystal of light that flickers when Gollum is nearby, and Beorn doesn't realize that he's not actually a bear when he "changes form".
Spielberg would make it into a bullshit social statement, and spend 2-3 hours cramming it down our throats. Something about greed.
Cameron would just rip off the other LoTR movies - maybe not the worst thing that could be done, but The Hobbit doesn't really need the "Aliens" treatment.
Anderson would make it a deeply emotional piece wrought with dark humor. Smaug becomes an ancient treasure-addicted lizard that slits his wrists as a joke. The movie ends with Bilbo bawling - tears of joy.
Burton would certainly make it among the most visually interesting pieces of fantasy, but he'd use Gandalf to work out more of his daddy issues. I would expect creepy eyebrows, and a more "drunk with power" demeanor.

Either Peter Jackson directs it, or nobody does. Simple as that.

Even the right-holders on the Hobbit property said to New Line Cinema that, if the contract expired without a movie being made, they would not lease the rights out again unless they knew PJ would be behind it.

Zack Snyder or Quentin Tarantino - these guys could make a good movie out of anything, and might even suceed in making something tolkien wrote entertaining :p

Seriously.. where is the Peter Jackson option, surely it makes the most sense that he directs it seeing how he did such a good job of the lord of the rings trilogy and therefore is hugely experienced in the area.

steven speilburg or james cameron.

tim burton is a horrible choice. he is good at what he does, but his movies are not something the hobbit should be styled like.

Peter Jackson, he's read the books and he loves them.
And he didn't, as Yahtzee would put it "lavish the series in tongue baths".
I wouldn't trust the series to anyone else.

peter jackson? it only makes sense.
Gotta read the question guys :)

Ill go with Cameron. Spielberg has way of....changing things that I don't approve of. (Not that I don't like his films, I do.)
Nah, bro, when I did it it was a joke. You know, like "Well, only he can do it anyway, so what's the..." Umm.
Desperately saving face games.

Why the hells isn't Peter Jackson not in that list? He did the Lord of the Rings perfectly, except for one hick-up when he didn't show the scene with Tom Bomberdelle in 'The Fellowship of the Ring'. Plus he made Frodo's side of the story more enjoyable, i couldn't read that part and not be bored with the book.

So overall. PETER JACKSON FOO!

In my opinion, nobody. I would really like to see the film die. It's obvious that Jackson is tired of Middle Earth, and I don't blame him. And I would hate to see my favorite series suffer from prequel/sequelitis. Three Middle Earth films is enough.

Seeing as how Peter Jackson has already done an amazing job with the Lord of the Rings movies, I don't think anyone but him should do the Hobbit.

Michael Bay. not for the qaulity because there are people who could do a much better job, but just to see how it would turn out.
