I think that Guillermo Del Toro and Peter Jackson are the only people who could really do it justice. That being said, I would love to see Tim Burton get his hands on it. Maybe a Tim Brton/Terry Gilliam collaboration. Now that would be something to see ;)

To the 61 people who voted for Tim Burton "ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FUCKING MINDS?"

Seriously, if its Tim Burton you might as well have him team up with Uwe Boll...they'll create a masterpiece

well it's a shame that Del Toro is stepping down, if Jackson decided to direct it I'm sure it would still be good, he seems pretty passionate about the material and did a good job with LoTR.

Ridley Scott has experience with similar works, but I really didn't care for Robin Hood so I'm not sure if he's losing his touch or not. So if not Jackson I'd like to see Neill Blomkamp give it a try or maybe Sam Raimi or Joss Whedon.

When I read "The Hobbit", I thought it could use some excessive explosions, shaky camera, blinding lens flares, more 'splosions, and shove in a hooker for a female lead. We need Micheal Bay.

Seriously, I can't see anybody but Jackson doing this. But I don't know if he'd like to.

Das Boot the mini-series (didn't we call them serials once?) was excellent, but Outbreak started off with a brilliant opening few scenes, slid downhill and then went ohshitwe'renearlyoutoftimewehavetotidyeverythingupandhaveaHappyEndingrightfuckingNOW and slapped everything shit-shaped with a Deus Ex Machina. That film could have been ten times better (literally: five stars rather than half a star).

Now that Guillermo Del Toro has stepped down, it seems that Peter Jackson might be directing The Hobbit after all. If it's not him, who would you like to see direct The Hobbit?

Quentin Tarantino.

Gandalf: What does Smaug look like?
Bilbo: What?
Gandalf: What country you from?
Bilbo: Uh...the Shire?
Gandalf: What ain't no country I ever heard of! They speak Elvish in the Shire?
Bilbo: What?
Gandalf: ELVISH, ************! DO-YOU-SPEAK-IT?
Bilbo: Yes!
Gandalf: Then you know what I'm saying!
Bilbo: Yes!
Gandalf: Describe what Smaug looks like!
Biblo: What, I-?
Gandalf: [pointing his staff] Say what again. SAY WHAT AGAIN. I dare you, I double dare you, hobbitfucker. Say what one more goddamn time.
Bilbo: He's r-r-red...
Gandalf: Go on.
Bilbo: He's scaly...He's a dragon....
Gandalf: Does he look like a *****?
Bilbo: What?
Gandalf: DOES HE LOOK LIKE A *****?
Bilbo: No!

Best. Lord of the Rings tale. Ever.

Doesn't matter, they'll end up fucking it the same way they did Lord of The Rings.
Yeah, I still haven't figured out how the siege engines on the roof of Minas Tirith got the extra range that the book explicitly stated they didn't have, where the shrunken, pale, frog-like little remnant of a Hobbit-like person with the nervous swallowing tic went or why the thundering blue fuck the barber from High Plains Drifter was wandering around yelling "Gollum!" at his own reflection.
Weird, that.
Taking Smeagol out of the films altogether really took away the poignant miniature (for everyone else) tragedy of him near the end. In the books he was taking nervous, faltering steps on the path to redemption and Frodo was really trying to help him and then Sam royally screwed it up. In the film, he was completely left out and the frickin' barber was sneaking around sabotaging food supplies.
I understand why they had to resort to having the Nazgûl swooping down to knock people off the walls: they couldn't show them sapping morale by flying overhead above the clouds. It was still pretty lame.

Anyone but Tim Burton.
My version of the Hobbit does NOT include "The Hobbit" being played by Johnny Depp, or Golem being played by Helena Bonham Carter. It most certainly does not include white makup, black everything else, with a "wacky and crazy" musical number.
Yes, FUCK YOU TIM BURTON.

I certainly don't feel as though I need a movie of The Hobbit, but I don't see why Jackson shouldn't have a go at it since he did a good job with the LotR trilogy.

Notes:

Jackson is still scripting the thing, no matter who directs. Spielberg wouldn't be able to put in any social messages, JUST his skills as far as framing shots, getting good performances out of actors, overall visual design, etc.

Certain characters have already been cast. Hugo Weaving, Andy Serkis, and Ian McKellan almost certainly will reprise their roles, so Tim Burton can't screw them up. If Depp and Carter were cast, it wouldn't be too unreasonable (such as Gollum).

Whatever happens, Jackson is a producer for this project, and overseeing it. He won't let anybody mess it up too bad, even Michael Bay.

That being said, I'd have Danny Devito direct it. He did a fantastic job with Matilda, and I could see The Hobbit being really good if done in a similar fashion.

P.S. Thanks

Uwe Boll.

In all seriousness, I chose Cameron. I would have picked Spielburg, but hasn't been quite what he used to be. Whereas Avatar was pretty damn good, so yeah.

Current news with this movie is that Peter Jackson may just do this himself, and honestly, might as well go with the guy who did LotR anyway, right? And honestly, why the hell ISN'T Peter Jackson on that list?

That list of director's is like a murderer's row of washed up directors. None of them have put out anything solid in a looooooooong time (and no, that mediocre Avatar flick does not count. Don't bother arguing with me about this because I'm just gonna link you to my review of it if you do.).

Edgar Wright ("Hot Fuzz", upcoming "Scott Pilgrim"), starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo

Who is the fool who put David Lynch on the list of selections? Can anyone even name his last movie?

If we are going for obscure 80's icon's in the scifi and fantasy adaptation department, how about John Milius (Conan the Barbarian)
