CoD4 is by far my favorite game in the franchise (and perhaps my favorite game to play online), but it's my belief that BlOps is the best game in the series since then... but given that it's main competition is MW2, that might not be saying all that much.

If I judge purely on hours spent playing.. Then I'm gonna have to vote for the original Modern Warfare..

WaW. I am not suprised to see that I am in the minority here, but I felt that CoD 4 was horrible. Buggy/hacked/glitched/aimbotted online, a story that was completely crazy (not in the good way) and characters who only invoked 1 emotion from me, pity (seriously, what kind of name is to be called Soap?)

Then I picked up WaW and I immediatly loved it. Plus Nazi Zombies was a great game mode.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I am not trying to belittle CoD 4, thats just how I feel about it. /Disclaimer

Why include the "I like an older COD" option when the question is which recent game do you like?

OT: I truly like Black Ops. I felt that the story, regardless of the incredibly harsh review here on the Escapist, was great. I am having way more fun with Black Ops then I was with MW2.

Treyarch did a great job with Black Ops, and I can't wait to see where they go with the series next.

COD4:MW was great, COD5:WaW was ok.

Other than that I've not really enjoyed the COD games.

Modern Warfare, solely for the great fun of 4-player LAN on tiny maps. Gotta love that.
And it has a kick-ass zombie mod I've forgotten the name of... :(

Haven't played Black Ops, didn't like MW2 (campaign? What campaign?), WAW was alright.
With that out of the way... COD4 has been my favorite so far.
Great campaign, addicting multiplayer...

Contrary to all the haters, I'm actually going to say Modern Warfare 2.

Although the campaign lacked certain elements from CoD4 (such as uber awesome stealth bits which, although were kinda there, didn't match up to what CoD4 offered), I do a lot better in MW2's multiplayer, and I somehow prefer the feel of the guns in MW2 too :p

edit: mind you, I haven't played Black Ops (no TV/console in university... D':), and I really like the idea of wager matches...

Played a bit of 4 at a friends house, and the demo for MW2... I was not impressed. 4 was alright, but I couldn't even bring myself to finish the MW2 demo, played a bit of the multiplayer for COD4, again, it was alright, but certainly not the godsend that people make it out to be. Combine this with the fact that people talk about the series like it's the second coming of Christ, my non-gamer friends judging me by automatically assuming that I play COD and am therefore a shithead, and my general disdain for realistic military shooters in general, and you could see why I'm not exactly enthused with the praise the series gets.

Even though I love Black Ops, CoD 4 still reigns supreme in this gritty era of the Call of Duty series. I would rank the games of this current console generation as such:

1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (the campaign was one hell of a ride and the multiplayer was revolutinary)
2. Call of Duty: Black Ops (great story line, zombies, revamped multiplayer and loads of other goodies)
3. Call of Duty: World at War (a great send off to the WWII genre with a bloody and brutal storyline, same great multiplayer from CoD4 and the introduction of Nazi Zombies)
4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Spec Ops mode could save this game from an unacceptably poor story and a multiplayer that was hacked and glitched to the nth degree)

Yes, I think World at War is better than Modern Warfare 2. The finished product of Modern Warfare 2 did not earn the accolades that it received. It was not the follow up that Modern Warfare deserved. That honor belongs to Black Ops because it took risks and did not just throw in a single player that was meant to play second fiddle to the multiplayer.

I love the Call of Duty series and have fallen in with the cynical gamers and have given up on it because it is popular. No, I've been with the series since the beginning and I will stay with it all the way. Call of Duty 4 changed the series for the better and, with the exception of Modern Warfare 2, the games that have followed it have been excellent. I am looking forward to what the future holds.

CoD4:MW was my personal favorite, I like Black Ops so far. Assault rifles seem to be a little OP though.

It depends who the praise is from because you get raging douche fanboys that cry that it is the best game ever despite hundreds of flaws.
I know the difference between "enlightened opinion" and the "raging douche fanboys" well enough to get a grasp of honest opinions about stuff I may be interested in.

I voted Black Ops because it's awesome, although I'm pissed at the stuttering issue. 6 hours of scouring the internet and installing drivers and still nothing...
