And while Mario Kart Wii may have a couple of flaws, cheating AI isn't really one I've noticed.
Perfect racing, every item has less effect on AI racers, possibly less(if any) stun time when off-screen.

It's not as obvious as the other Mario Kart games but the AI still cheats.

They cheat on split/second! they make the track explode at me and it's not fair! Wait what do you mean they're meant to do that?

I don't know how certain you can be of something that occurs offscreen.
It's also counterbalanced somewhat by the fact that the AI are no longer "stacked" across the points system (ie the same people used to end up winning every race in a GP) do make it easier to win tournaments overall (although getting the 1*s is a *****)

I don't think the AI cheats in FUEL. Maybe they're a bit unbalanced the other way, too. It's not uncommon that I finish minutes ahead of the pack in the longer races.

Then again, their car doesn't seem to reflect the capabilities they seem to have. They have cars that can go around corners!

If this were actually how it works I wouldn't have a problem with it. The problem is I've never played a game that works like this. What always happens is the cars always speed up to keep pace with you if you're in front, and if you're behind after one or two mistakes you might as well just restart the track because you'll never get out of last place.
Devs are usually a lot less generous with slowing cars down that are infront, for challenges sake. When they're infront they usually go regular speed, behind they speed up a bit.

Which racing games are you playing btw? With most racing games that i've played i can always manage to catch up eventually after a few mistakes, even if it seems hopeless to begin with.

I always thought the cheating was pretty blatant on that game actually. No matter how fast i went i could never hold first place for more than a few seconds. I actually exploited it a lot and stayed in 2nd place until right before the finish line.

F-zero Gx.
Simply put, this is the only racing game I've played where the A.I. plays perfectly fair, and if you can get in front and race well you'll never see them catch up.

I really can't think of a single one in which the AI doesn't cheat... (one of the reasons why I dislike racing games)

Hell even in games like GTA and Red Dead Redemption the AI cheats during racing challenges...

Oh wait, Star Wars: Episode One Racer was quite fair. The opponents could be very good at times, but I never felt like thay were circumventing the game rules.

The only series of racing games where I haven't felt this way is Burnout, I think.
Ha! You obviously haven't played any of the later races in Burnout 3 or Burnout Legends. Seriously, if you crash even once in some of those later races, the AI cars will rocket past you, somehow will be 10-20 seconds ahead of you, and will be impossible to catch up to for the remainder of the race even if you boost constantly and don't crash once. If that isn't a case of cheating AI than I don't know what is.

That Kirby racing game a few years back, where you'd surf on warpstars. I thought the AI was pretty accurate, but it def had flaws. Bot stars would still crash, hit hazards, miss some boost pads, etc. The AI was good, but there were flaws too.

Yeah your right, almost in every racing game the AI just speeds up past their limit, that is much easier for developers to make it more challenging like that instead of perfect control AI. Doesn't just go for racing games.

Anyway, the only racing games that I felt the AI doesn't cheat is in Road Rash and Rock N Roll Racing.

Ridge Racer comes to mind. To unlock certain cars you had to come 2nd or 3rd on tracks. I stopped at the finish line and waited for quite awhile :D

Other racers like burnout seem to give the AI a boost if you are too far ahead....or a blue shell in Mario Kart. *RAGE @ blue shell, lightning then hit by a billy bullet on final lap*

Gran Turismo seems fair to me. I could speed off and not see the guy I overtook unless I crashed or had to stop in the pit lane.

! Now I have to dig that game out. Just to run over old women with zimmer frames & kick coppers off their bikes into oncoming traffic. God that game was fun.

Oh my god the worst computer player cheater is in Burnout, any of them. There's no map for you to see where they are, but you can have the fastest car, and wreck ALL of them badly and one wrong turn and they suddenly dart ahead of you instantly. Meaning I'm 90% sure they just teleport behind you.

Gran Turismo series, the AI was generally really static considering they rarely passed anyone.

And Codemasters games. GRID, DiRT, FUEL, the cars acted like they were driven by actual human beings. They tried passing eachother, and had car crashes.

"Dirt 2" and "ToCA: Race Driver 3" are pretty good on that. The latter has an awesome Scotsman yelling at you the whole time.

Forza 3, GT4, they didn't seem to cheat. Finish quite far ahead provided I hit my apexes and don't fall off the road. Forza does have the added benefit that AI vehicles do make mistakes. They don't always manage to keep it on the track.

I had to think for a minute but I got one. Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing. Worst game ever. Your opponent literally won't leave the starting gate.
