I was listening to some music earlier, and I'll admit I'm a huge rap fan, and I notice a lot of Escapists' are against rap as a whole. Can anyone give me some reasons for the rap hate?

Most people who hate it just have only heard the stuff that is high profile, which all tends to sound a certain way as dictated by music fashion. Simple as that.

There is good music in ALL genres. Just a matter of finding it. Some could be bothered, others couldn't and would rather just sledge the style as a whole rather than go hunting for the pearls.

It's a serious problem that for every Rakim there's a hundred T-Pains kicking about.

You obviously haven't heard the rubbishy new Rakim album. He was #1 back in the Eric B. days though.

As for the five songs:

It Was A Good Day- Ice Cube

It's about the average life of a guy in the projects in California in the late eighties. I suppose you could say it epitomizes what you dislike about the mainsteam rap, but Ice Cube's account is what it was like, not the glamorized nonsense of 50 Cent and his ilk.

Basic Cable- Aesop Rock

While I don't really understand Aesop's messages as a continuous meaning throughout his songs, I do believe this one is about the effect of brainwashing television has had on people.

Heart Of A Lion- Kid Cudi

This is about Cudi's belief in himself, and how one should belief in oneself because that's all that matters. Have a heart of a lion.

Sugar (Gimme Some)- Trick Daddy

This is a sexual, raunchy song. No grand message to it.

Tokyo Drift (The Fast and the Furious)- Teriyaki Boys

Just a song made for the movie.

So there. Yes, there are songs that are pointless. But honestly, if every song tried to make a point and have a message, they'd all be bland a repetitive anyway. Your turn.

Personally, I don't enjoy rap - but then again, I don't really like much besides metal, and even when it comes to metal, I have perculiar taste.

I am one of those people who genuinly like listening to Dethklok (the lyrics are nonsensical, true, but what music isn't these days?)

I just find rap (and really any music but rock and metal) really, really annoying.

Common mistake here is that most rap-haters don't hate rap: They hate GANGSTA rap. Generally, the hatred is for the stuff that try's to present violent, criminal behavior and abusing your girlfriend as a positive thing worthy of respect in real life.

Without generalities, i'd have to listen to every song to pick out the main idea, make a graph of how often each main idea comes up, and present it that way. But thats far too troublesome, so tell you what, open up your itunes, tell me what the first 5 randomized songs in the rap genre comes up, and i'll do the same with my first 5. Let's pick out those main ideas shall we?

Now here's the clincher, are you going to actually be honest with what 5 songs come up?

I guess I would say I am a bit more against it, though I am close to neutral. The thing, for me, at least is that when it is a comedy song, I actually enjoy them (Songs like Lazy Sunday), and some of them, like the first of the two links posted here earlier, are actually tolerable or entertaining. I guess it is just that I guess I rarely hear the "quality stuff", and keep hearing that same repetitive as hell crap on the radio. My examples for that are (Bare with me, I don't know their names, I just hear them on the radio) this one that keeps repeating for 30 seconds at a time "You're the best I ever had" multiple times, and some song about a hotel room (I think their exact quote was "The hotel, motel, holiday inn), that is about six difference lines said over and over again. One could argue that some other genres repeat, but the ones that I listen at least have a guitar or some other cool instruments playing in the background, rather than beats that I am almost certain I can get from one of those electronic keyboard's pre-set beats.

Maybe the only good rapper I can hardly stand and I put a lot of emphasis on hardly, would have to be Ice Cube. But for the rest, Excuse my french here but they are utter shit. There Maybe one or two dimonds in that turd but, It isn't something I would listen to on a daily basis. That's what metal's for...

I have a hatred of autotune, which a lot of "rappers" tend to use. Other than that, I'll listen to rap if it's interesting. Like Jay Z's DOA, which has a pretty cool riff in the background.

I tend to lean towards rock/metal personally.

Never liked the genre for reasons unknown. Maybe because in my eyes it is just violent rhyming that makes listeners think they know about music. Or maybe because the people I know who like rap think that playing a guitar is easy but run away as soon as I ask them to play something.

It would be a lie to say that I hate rap music, but I don't identify with it, and I prefer some kind of instrumentation.

It's an unfortunate fact that almost all "mainstream" music is absolute garbage these days, rap or otherwise.

Mainstream "rap" has gone down the shitter. There are still good rappers: KRS-One, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Immortal Techniques, Dr. Dre. There is also your old school stuff which is good but anything mainstream I hate..

Well I definitely give it respect as a genre, however the artists within the genre are varied. Theres good stuff, and theres bad stuff....and I have the lousy luck of listening to the bad stuff, that of course skews my opinion. Hip-hop varies as well but every f***ing douche now doesn't need to learn to sing when he has Auto-Tune, and the Synthesizer.

I think I need to see some evoultion in the genre, diversify.

But I digress.

I think gangster rap has limited appeal and since im just a white boy with a 3.6 GPA and not a wankster white trash mofo(The ones I know are pretty cool, while others make me sick), I think im out of the appeal group. Although, if I was in it it would be a different story.

Hip-hop however is a different matter entirely, because it is now brideing the gap between rap and rock. There will be this long awkward period, like ummmmmmm NOW! Where you will get shit going mainstream, and it being popular with the "cool" kids who in turn spread the diesase of crappy hip-hop, while good hip-hop is being overlooked.

There is good Rap and Hip-Hop, you just have to look for it, and the bad stuff(complete shit) is already mainstream!

I googled the difference between rap and hip hop, and answers mostly sum up to mean there is no clear line which separates the two. I'm not into either, but I've liked one or two songs from one of those genres, whichever that may be.

Either they hear mainstream hip hop music (which tends not to be the cream of the genre) and hate it, or they hate 50 Cent and thus hate the genre, or they haven't given it a chance and hate it, or they just hate it for the sake of hating it, and those people (the last ones) well...

Or the style of music doesn't appeal to them, which is fine. But if it doesn't appeal then it doesn't give an excuse to hate.

There are more examples, but that'll do.

I don't intend ANY offence, but did it occur to you that the music simply might not speak to them?

I think it's worth saying that I, personally, get a warm, fuzzy feeling inside every time someone quotes me and says, "/thread". There's few greater ego boosts that an online forum can grant me. So thank you.
