And yes, that's one subgenre of hip hop music that dominates the airwaves, just like I'm sure this applies to others too.

And there are other types of hip hop out there really, you just have to look beyond what's in front of you.

Don't get me wrong, I've come across some decent rap in the past, but most of the material being peddled currently (be it rap or any other 'mainstream' genre) so thoroughly overwhelms the truly talented artists that I just generally don't bother looking. And honestly, Youtube has just made it worse, regardless of the genre; I'm not sifting through the eleventy-odd billion bits of sub-par artistry to find the few gems. I'm just not that much of a sadist.

Besides, I've got almost every Tom Waits album ever made, so if I want something that resembles the spoken word, has a deep message, and that I can completely and unabashedly enjoy, I'll toss that on.

I like guitars, drums, and singing that isn't simply talking along to a synthesizer. I'm sure there's good rap out there, but I haven't found it, and I'm not interested enough to search for it. It just seems to me to be rather lazy, and the high profile rappers don't help the image. I'll stick with Tom Waits, NOMEANSNO, Neutral Milk Hotel, Leningrad, and The Dead Kennedys. You know, bands with a modicum of talent that don't need autotune, use real instruments, and don't feel like talking about screwing bitches, partying with the homies, busting peoples asses with their gats, drinking courvoisier, killing cops, being badasses, etc.

Indeed I had, though I never pass up an excuse to listen to it again.

As for your other question: Beats the hell out of me. Jazz isn't my genre of choice, I've heard a great deal of it over the years from various eras and styles, but that was mainly thanks to family members who love it - I was content just to listen, so I'm rather fuzzy when it comes to specifics.

Look, if a person is used to listening to and gets much enjoyment from a particular kind of music, whatever it is, they get their great musical moments from that music. You know those moments, when you're sitting in car, club, concert, or room, and the music makes you feel a certain way, and it's fucking awesome.

When that happens, why is that person going to go looking in a new direction for those moments? Only when their favorite kind begins to get stale, or if they are naturally neophiles.

Next time you are really bored with whatever music it is you normally like, take a look at a kind of music you think you hate. Ask around and find some that is done well, and listen to it a few times before you judge. After a while, you might find a musical moment in there, one that you never would have found if you didn't give it a chance.

I would not say that I was overly fond of rap as a whole, but I have heard particular songs I liked. Tho the best rap I ever heard was just a guy rapping unaccompanied on a local stage. I find that true of most music, however; it is at its best when you share the same air with the musicians.

I love how people in this thread love to generalize and say things like "Good rap is extremely rare." No it is not. You are just not looking for any good hip-hop. Also, it is bullcrap to immediately turn to lyrical content for musical quality. There are plenty of rock and metal songs with lyrics that are objectionable or just don't make any sense. The voice is just another instrument, and the meanings of the words can be ignored as long as the words sound good together. I'm not saying that 50 cent isn't crap, but I am saying that people shouldn't shut themselves off completely to a great genre.

For the longest time I absolutely hated Rap. The popular artists acted like idiots in public, the lyrics seemed to murder the English language, and the kind of life it advocated just seemed wrong to me. However, I got curious one day and went digging for a new style of music to enjoy (you can only enjoy metal for so long before it all starts to sound the same). I ran across some rap songs and actually sat and gave it a listen. I started to find my taste for rap. Now I like quite a bit of rap, though I don't really have a taste for 'gangsta' rap.

On a positive note, a lot of the 'gangsta' rap that I don't like actually have pretty good beats. That is to say, with those songs if I cut out the lyricist I would find something to enjoy. Of course, when you cut out the lyricist it isn't really rap anymore is it.

Faie enough, but I don't have much of a say in what people are blasting out of their houses, cars, etc. This is beside the fact that I have a bit of a problem tuning it out. Yes, I know not all Rap is needlessly aweful, it's just the stuff that I'm practically forcefed on a daily basis. Yeah, yeah, I can ignore it, blah blah blah. Like I said before, not all Rap is bad. Simply put, I just never cared for Rap really.

I like metal, so rap isn't really my thing. However, that doesn't mean I can't appreciate some rap (pretty much just Eminem). I just get tired of hearing about money, bitches, niggas and how mean cops are. Not that all rap is about that and not that every genre doesn't have stereotypes/recurring themes.

Well, it really contains little that attracts me about music. Minimal (if any) melody, repetitive percussion (typically sampled or synthesized), little to no actual vocal talent, and generally uninteresting (if not grotesquely stupid, violent and misogynistic) subject matter/lyrics. NOTE: This refers only to what I've been exposed to (i.e. the mainstream) not the genre as a whole.

That said I don't actively hate it. I hate the fact that its shoved in my face everywhere because the record companies know that it is selling right now make sure people hear it everywhere. I also agree that, for the most part, it isn't actually what I would consider art because it requires little to no craft, skill, ability, etc. and is nearly totally devoid of any meaning or real emotion. Can a rap song really express the range of emotions other genres are capable of without melody or actual singing? I think not.

That said, I like the Gorillaz as well as K-Os but they both contain elements of multiple genres that I already like as well as a tendency to record with live instruments and are actually musicians. So they don't really represent the genre as a whole at all. Although I wouldn't say I like them in spite of their genre, it isn't too far from the truth either.

In brief, I don't hate the genre as a whole. What I do hate is the dominant sub-genre (gangsta rap) and the vapid commercialism, violence, misogyny etc. that defines it compounded by the way it is being pushed on us all the time.

Gangsta rap hasn't been popular since 2pac was murdered. What you are referring to is club rap. It only appeals to women when they go out dancing in nightclubs.
