Recommend a good horror film.

Oh duh... Let The Right One In.

One of the singularly coolest vampire flicks EVAR (next to Near Dark). And no... the vampire does not FREAKIN' sparkle

I Find many of the movies based of Stephen Kings work pretty good, the Shining probably being the best. I found Pet Sematary pretty good as well.

(Yes it know i spelled it wrong, thats how they spelled it.

I wouldn't really count it as a horror though.

Have to agree with those who've recommended [Rec], really intense and will get your heart rate up. I'd go see The Crazies. I went to see it last night and really enjoyed it, lots and lots of jumpy moments and an awesome scene in a car wash. Easily one of the best horror remakes.

You could go way back and watch Nosferatu, the original vampire movie. Would still be good for some old school scares.

The most brilliant psyhcological horror/thriller I've seen is George Sluizers Spoorloos.

I warmly recommend it. If all goes right, you'll be scarred for life.
BUT - avoid the american remake at all costs; "The Vanishing".
All subtlety was removed in favour of a friendlier climax.

AHA! Now the ball's in PrototypeC's court! Listen up kiddo, you're talking about my biggest point of expertise.

Session 9... Do /NOT/ check the wiki though. It ruins the entire plot :(
THIS. My #1 of all time, for a time. A bit far on the subtle side of things, you probably won't be voiding your bowels but for me atmosphere, dread and psychological horror is king.

Other favourites of mine include John Carpenter's The Thing(effects are a little out-of-date, but imagine when it first came out), The Shining(Stanley Kubrick), The Mothman Prophecies(critically panned, but I'd lie if I said I wasn't freaked the hell out), and Jacob's Ladder(not strictly a horror movie, but probably the scariest movie I've mentioned so far).

Audition has been mentioned, and while not my kind of horror it is carnage and death, not to mention damn scary. I am ashamed to admit I haven't seen a few mentioned here, so I need to study up.

Surprised no one has recomended maybe the best horror movie of all time, The Exorcist?
The Thing has already been said.

Really have to recomend the ORIGINAL Wicker Man, avoid the re-make like the fucking plauge. While its not really scarey in the same way as most horrors, its undeniably weird and sureal. Bizzare psycho-sexual scenes where women rub themselves naked against grave stones, jars of pickled foreskins. And then Christopher Lee as the lord of this insane island, just incredible and more forboding and evil than Saruman or Count Dooku. One my favourite lines in the film comes from him: "But they are naked!"
"Naturally, far too dangerous to jump through fire with your clothes on."

The film also has maybe one of the greatest endings to a horror ever, an absolutely chilling performance by Edward Woodward as he is burnt alive.

The House of the Devil is a throwback to 80s horror, evident by the fact that you can buy it on VHS.

Obviously House of the Dead!
(it's a pain I have to bear when I admit that I found that movie bloody hilarious)

Jokes aside, I found Eden Lake quite unsettling

As always, many of the Stephen King movie adaptions are really, really good (though many of them are atrocious, as well...)

----

Actually, since I mentioned House of the Dead, I feel obligated to add that House of the Dead 2 is actually a really good zombie flick (in my eyes, at least, though I guess my taste is questionable)

I agree, classics are highly overrated.

The only horror movie to actually scare me was The Descent, so maybe give that a try.
Awww man, same.

OP: It depends what scares you. Do religiousy demon related films give you chills or do films which could happen scare you? I hate the idea of being stuck in a cave anyway, not to mention in darkness and with weird things trying to kill you.

I've read and watched a lot of horror. It was my favourite genre for some time. To be honest, not many horror movies are good. Once you've lost your innocence (ie, when you know what is going to happen, you can count the moments of suspense and not jump when the loud noise springs out on you and when you know it's just a movie) a lot of the films lose their edge.

Personally, I'd go with the Del Torro movies. They're chilling and poignant if not terrifying all the way through and good to watch with friends because you can chat about it after.

But then I'm distinguishing Horror from Gore. Gore makes you cringe. Horror for me, gives me chills after the movie has finished and makes you think twice about putting your feet on the floor when you're in bed in case there is something there. Gore is a good part of horror if done correctly, but sometimes it fails, like Hostel, or Saw sequels. It's schlock horror and gore for the sake of using gore.

But if you're after Gore... Hah! Pretty much anything on the horror shelf with 'Saw' in the title, or with Rob Zombie as a director will hit the spot. Peter Jackson's early work is good for it too. And check online for banned films. They might be aged now, but the content is pretty horrific still. I think there are boxsets on sale of films that were banned at some point.

Personally I like 'Boo' - a pretty poorly known film set around Halloween and based in an abandoned mental asylum. Not a great film, but a good little watch. And I also really liked 'Th13teen Ghosts'. Try 'Shrooms' too.

Evil Dead 2!

It is actually quite scary. And it's directed by the same fellow who directed Drag Me To Hell.

However, while it's not technically a horror film, the scariest film I have ever seen without a doubt is Epic Movie Alien. Seriously, watch if you haven't.
I'm gonna go With Furburt here and say Alien, or Aliens. Personally I liked Aliens better. I've heard Aliens was a little better then Alien from other people as well. But go ahead watch both... at your own risk!!

"Good". "Horror". Just pick one.

HaHA!

OT: The Thing was good. Don't get anything made in the last ten years, horror has become utterly formulaic and dull.

If you like monster driven horror, and you've already seen the Thing, check out a Korean movie called the Host. The monster is pretty sweet, and the Koreans throw in comedy where it's completely inappropriate, which makes it all the more funny.

Or if you're looking for something more psychological, In the Mouth of Madness is a nice take on the Lovecraft mythos.

I've you've never seen Masters of Horror, you really should. It's hour-long episodes each directed by a famous horror director. Here's some that are great: Dreams in the Witch House, The Screwfly Solution, Pro-Life, Cigarette Burns, and The Damned Thing.

Fuck Paranormal Activity. It's directed by someone who doesn't know the difference between boredom and suspense. The idiocy of the main characters keeps you from ever empathizing with them. It's Blair Witch in a house, which makes it less scary.

EDIT: How did I forget The Mist? It's probably the second best monster horror there is, first being The Thing.

I loved that movie, but the ending was terrible. I couldn't believe they included
a dream
