I tend to like the more adult (not pornographic, get your mind out of the gutter) anime. I.E. I don't like Full Metal Alchemist, Dragonball etc... , too childish. Death Note was OK, but I had a jaded opinion because I saw the live action first, and I like the live action better. The anime series I would recomend would be Gilgamesh, Gantz, Samuri 7, and Samuri Champloo. They are a little more adult and less geared towards kids, and I liked that.

Theirs a new anime out that's very different, but a little slow moving "Sky Crawlers" it's good if you can get your hands on it.

I totally forgot about Samurai Champloo, I am so ashamed.

BTW, Shinji is my favorite character to come out of Evangeliaon.

When someone is harassing you and you need just that tiny bit of rage to overcome your inhibitons, you just imagine Shinji is the one whining. This will fill you with rage and allow you to knock some heads around. Best. Character. Ever.

Gantz seemed more geared toward teenagers than adults.

I am inclined to agree, but the overt sexuality and violence leans it to the adult category for me. But you are correct in the portrail of the characters, very much teen and not adult. A bit like Battle Royal in that sense.

I'll add my own list of suggestions, because I think I've got one that no one else seems to have noted.

*Note: The following list is only anime that I have watched at least half of. I'm not the biggest otaku, but I'm pretty confident I can tell a good anime from bad*

Dragonball/DBZ - It's been a while since I've watched it, but I enjoyed it. The best pre-Fruits Basket dub, in my opinion. If you do watch, only go up to the Cell Saga, for your own sake. It just gets ridiculous from there.

Death Note - Just amazing. The constant chess match between Light and L kept me guessing for a long time. I know I'll never see anything like this again.

Azumanga Daioh - A good, light-hearted anime. Pretty funny. Please don't watch the dub.

Lucky Star - See Azumanga Daioh. They're pretty similar in style.

Love Hina - Just plain bizarre. I loved every second of it.

Negima - If you like Love Hina, this is by the same writer. The series makes a dramatic shift from comedic to serious about two-thirds of the way in, though, which caught me off guard.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - Though it seems like pure comedy at first, this anime can get pretty deep. Makes you think about a lot of stuff. The order in which the episodes are shown is perfect, as well.

Black Lagoon - This series is action-packed and has pretty interesting characters, although it can be a bit somber and strange at times. Just to give you an idea, the scene that got me hooked was when a helicopter pilot took a torpedo to the face in the second episode.

Full Metal Alchemist - The canon behind FMA is incredibly detailed, and all makes sense once you get your head around it. The characters are also easy to become attached to, so when one of them gets killed off, it's pretty heart-wrenching. One of the few fantastic English dubs out there, as well.

Finally, my favorite anime:
CardCaptor Sakura

No, I'm not kidding. My favorite anime (A 20-year-old male college student) is a shoujou about two 10-year-old magic users.

There's a lot to this series that makes it great in my mind. The characters are captivating, the story kept me entertained, and each episode shows a little change in each character, which is capped by probably the most touching ending scene in an anime I've ever seen.

If you do watch it, do not watch the dub. Multiple characters and scenes are completely ruined because of American "censorship".

So, there you are. My list of recommendations. Enjoy your future endeavors into the world of anime.

Looking at the list Fullmetal Alchemist (which I've seen recommended a lot ITT) may or may not be for you.

I think you'd be likely to enjoy Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Berserk, and maybe Blood+ and Elfen Lied. All of them have both action and at least decent stories.

I personally enjoy Lupin III, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Vampire Hunter D.

Lupin III follows the story of the eccentric Lupin the 3rd and his accomplices on stealing treasure around the world.

Trigun also follow an eccentric character, Vash the Stampede, as he searches for his evil twin brother to stop the slaughter.

Cowboy Bebop follows a group of bounty hunters searching for criminals with bounties on their heads, while reflecting on their past.

Vampire Hunter D Follows the Vampire Hunter, D, on the prowl hunting demons, undead, and vampires. I would recommend you read the books before watching the movies. (because the movies don't cover D's past as much as the books.)

Samurai Champloo is another good anime series that good. (I didn't get much of it because I only saw parts of it.)

I almost fogot a 5 star anime movie, Princess Mononoke, A Man who was cursed by a boar god turned into a demon, must leave his village to find the "poison" that turned the god into a demon. (Recommended top priority if you haven't seen it yet)

Try Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist and maybe Slayers.

And definitely, definitely try watching Castle in the Sky (Or Laputa), Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away and Nausicaa from the valley of the wind and anything by Hayao Miyazaki. (I'm sure I've murdered the correct spelling of his name, but ah well)

It's truly amazing.
Indeed I tell everyone who asks me about anime to watch Hayao Miyazaki films, if those can't draw you in, nothing can.

Monster is a great anime if you are looking for something with more of a story than Naruto or Bleach.

Also if you already have some anime that you like anime planet has recommendations of similar anime that are helpful for finding others that you may like.

Definitely second this - and his movies have the added bonus of being licensed by Disney, so the voice acting is top-notch. Whisper of the Heart is such a sweet story, it almost makes me sad to say I cry for that movie. (For reference I didn't even cry for Old Freakin Yeller.)

M.D. Geist.
Most Dangerous Geist.

Its one of those Anime's where bit characters have about 20 gallons of blood though, but the fight scenes with Geist are "different", very visceral.

In my opinion every anime lover really should see Neon Genesis Evangelion, the story is very confusing and the ending (OVAs and Platnum Collection Re-do) always lead to some long discussions between me and my friends. Other than that, I would also recommend any of the Miyazaki movies, they were released in the US by Disney, and the dvds are actually done really well with full 5.1 Japanese sound with subs.

I'd also recommend Season 1 and 2 of Rurouni Kenshin, Season 3 doesnt follow the manga and was complete crap imo. (Of course thats because the manga wasn't finished when they were making the anime lol) The backstory Samurai X is also a really good intro into RK.
