Persona 3 and 4 are really worth playing, not perfect but some of they are still some of my favourite games I have played. It is probably best to play 3 first while the stories are not connected (though the share the same world) the game play improvements in 4 would make it hard to play 3 second without a lot of irritation. Neither of these games are typical jrpgs so if you are looking for some thing more along that lines I would hold off, but there are very few jrpgs I would say where anywhere near as good.
I don't mind if they're not typical. After all if a western rpg was just typical it would likely get overlooked.
To everyone, it's not just restricted to rpgs (i just thought that it would be a better title than 'japanese game')
Well I would recommend most games in the Megami Tensei lines but persona 3 and 4 are the easiest to get your hands on, just make sure you get persona 3 FES rather than the original version. Though if you widen the net to Japanese games in general I think you are looking a bit to far and wide but if you have not played the Clover studio games you are missing out. Okami is in many ways a better Zelda style game than any of the Zelda games and has a lot more original ideas (might also be one of the few games that could work well with he wii remote though I have only played the ps2 version so I can't say for sure) and God Hand, well that is just God Hand a game about punching people.

I have seen a couple of pics of okami and it looks great, very nice style (although it's not hard to be more original than zelda these days)

Okami is a fantastic game, but if at all possible you should play the PS2 version. The Wii version was not ported by Clover themselves, who I believe actually went bankrupt. The group who took it up and ported it did a fairly sub-par job adapting it to the Wiimote. Namely, combat is a real chore with any weapon other than the Rosary Beads, with attack combos being impossible to pull off consistently.

However, the Wii version of Okami is only badly done compared to the PS2 port. Compared to games in general, and most of the Wii's library specifically, it is a real gem, right up there with Mario Galaxy. I'm not saying "don't buy the Wii version of Okami", I'm saying "Get Okami, you won't regret it, but if possible get the PS2 version."

Hardly. They're still stealth games, as much as Twin Snakes wants to deny it. Capcom are the real exceptions to the rule, I don't think I've ever seen one of their games act with strategy. Or dignity.
It does say the the MGS is the exception to the strategy. Out of interest how do the capcom games lack dignity (apart from RE).

Pity it was one of the few game concepts that could have worked well on the wii, still the ps2 controls are far from being bad even if the odd spell is a pain to pull off. Though yes capcom folded clover after they made god hand, I have no idea other than capcom must hate tallent. Though it is a reason to keep an eye on Bayonetta as the team from Clover have pretty much all moved over to platinum games.

Bionic Commando. Devil May Cry.
Fair enough, haven't played but the zps don't paint them well.

Final Fantasy VII is now available on PSN so I'd recommend getting that for your PSP/PS3. PSP works nicely, I'm revisiting right now.

I'm currently very much enjoying Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor.
Also, The World Ends With You is awesome, and my personal favorite for memorability, gameplay (real-time action instead of turn-based) etc is the Kingdom Hearts series

Valkyrie Chronicles is pretty good, other than that there is of course Final Fantasy. I'd recommend you play FF7 and FF9 first. Other than that, No More Heroes? Yahtzee liked it so it can't be to bad.
Wish I could (as well as Killer 7 but I don't have a GC). Problem is I'm in New Zealand and I don't think I've ever seen it here. Still, better keep an eye out.
You can if you have a Wii, see D_987's list for 360 games :D and I dunno what ones are out for the PS3 other than FF7 on the PSN.

I had some fun with golden sun (sorry 'bout the rhyme, unintentional) and I'm not usually into jrpgs either, so maybe that would be a good start.

I though 7 was meant to be best.
This kind of ignorance is what prevents people finally leaving that game alone.

Not calling you ignorant specifically, more the general idea that FF7 was the best FF.

Basically FF7 is the game most people remember fondly mainly because it was the first FF most people played. As an FF game it is actually one of the worst, a huge dip from FF6. The only two games I was more disappointed with in the main series were FF8 and FFX-2. Many other people will reflect this (if they haven't drowned under the fanboyism of 7).
