I was expecting this list. And I feared the moment it would come.

Although needless to say your suggestions are duly noted.

I'd say Mai-HiME.
Congratulations, this is now #1 on my "must watch" list.
Well what do you know I'm actually good for something.
Then maybe you could return the favor and recommend an anime thats pretty much the opposite of this?
Something in an overall negative setting with a rather cynical view on things.
Cyberpunk and Dieselpunk would be my favorite settings.

While it doesn't particularly fall under all of your "things to keep in mind", I highly recommend the anime "Gokudou-kun Manyuuki" (Also known as just "Gokudo").
It's a comedy that parodies fantasy adventure animes like Slayers.
It's really fun to watch and is one of my personal favorites.

It would have come sooner but my GF called... and I've been hanging around Forum Games lately anyway...

I'd recommend Outlaw Star, FLCL, Black Lagoon, and Disgaea(it's based off the first game). All of them are great animes that I'd say you should give a watch ^_^ Oh, and you mentioned that you watched Gundam Wing, so I suggest you may want to watch some of the other Gundam series. I suggest 08th MS Team, 0083 Stardust Memory, Gundam 00 was decent, and The Gundam IGLOO series(it's a CGI series that shows the One Year War from Zeon's perspective, well the original IGLOO series does).

If you liked Lucky Star watch Azumanga Daioh. Make sure to watch in Japanese because the English voice acting sucks.
I back this up completely. I ended up dropping Lucky Star because discovering Azumanga Daioh, so inferior the former seemed afterwards.

I'm still kinda new to anime (I really got into it last year) but I'll suggest
Hellsing (both first series and the current OVA)
Elfen lied
trigun
gungrave
highschool of the dead (just ended)
I only saw a little bit but I hear Blood+ is amazing
Gantz
fullmetal alchemist:both first series and brotherhood (one of the few cases where the dubb may be better than the sub)
and if you died a little inside when soul eater ended (like I did). read the manga, it splits from the anime around issue 40 or 50 and gets really good.

EDIT:eek:hh crap. I did'nt read the "not into dark anime", I pretty much only watch dark, ummm still try trigun, fullmetal alchemist and the soul eater manga...I'm out of other ideas

9.Gungrave. Possibly one of the most underrated shows I've seen. Gungrave is a truly great story about friendship, love and betrayal without ever falling into cheesiness the great animation, spectacular fight scenes and well thought out character development doesn't hurt either.
I LOVED this anime, until about the last 5th or so, when they pulled out all of the monster bullshit. It worked extremely well as a crime drama, but once the monsters came into the mix it become mediocre at best.

Still, it's about 25 episodes long, and about the first 20 are completely amazing.
Yeah I know what you mean but it need to be tied to the game somehow... who's story is completely different never the less I still enjoyed it greatly, and even in the final half the character of Beyond The Grave rather intrigued me, was he a mindless slave to his own vengeance? was he simply driven by vague urges and memories of his past? Was he still Brandon Heat? the ending while being ambiguous tickled my heart string non the less...

The closest thing I have to your description is Bokurano, which is one of my favorites even though it lacks a love story and is extremely depressing. Its about a group of 13 year old kids who are forced to pilot a giant robot to save Earth. It ends up ultimately being about how they each deal with their eventual death, their own mortality, their destructive force, and their insignificance (but at the same time their massive amounts of responsibility) as a human being. I highly recommend it.

That sort of remind me of Gunbuster & Diebuster, so yeah I'll check it out.

Wikipedia says "The series shows influences from topics such as philosophy, computer history, cyberpunk literature and conspiracy theory"
wich sounds rather interessting.

Now if I only could find a series, anime or not, or a game in my favorite setting: Dieselpunk.

but, code geass is not that much like deathnote. i hated deathnote, but code geass is my favorite anime. The only similarity is that lelouch PRETENDS to be evil- *spoiler spoiler spoiler*. DO NOT COMPAIR HIM TO LIGHT. lelouch is a good guy!
To be fair lelouch is still very much an anti-hero and depending on the episode he's between a rather nice guy, all the way up to beeing a hero only thanks to Brittania beeing even worse. (All hail Brittania!) But thats one of the resons i loved Code Geass. It turned me from one that hates all anime on principle to someone that actually is rather open about exploring the genre.

And I must say I love your Spinzaku avatar.

Considering what you wrote their op a GREAT anime for you would definitely be School Rumble, I'd say. Maybe Love Hina as well, although that one is a tad annoying.

Air Gear (stylish, spirited, insubstantial, different, formulaic, fun)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (ridiculous, amazingly animated, good philosophical turnover, good sense of progression)
Planeties (space maintenance men - good personality and storytelling)
Godannar! (ultra fanservice to the mecha genre - with gratuitous jigglage)
Cowboy Bebop (episodic hijinks with a running narrative, charming characters, great animation)
