The unused icon is absurdly funny, however I found the original 'Child Killer' art to be a bit more appropriate given how you would take care of those little rock throwing b@stards.

What the hell was the guy thinking who REQUESTED this.
As the article says, he didn't he requested an image to go along with the childkiller reputation. This was one of the products.
He was asked to make a drawing, who requested the drawing, they knew full well it wouldn't be anything P.C enough to release.
There's a pretty good chance there actually IS an image witht he Child Killer rep, so, no, it was plausable to have a releasable image. This obviously was not that image.

So the question is, what image DID they use instead?

I'm not about to kill a kid to find out.
They never added any image for such a thing, the whole idea was dropped... in fact most editions of fallout 2 had removed kids, which led to some dumbass dialogues and quests involving invisible children. A mod was released that brought them back in, adding other quests related to children into the mix too. There was no image put in for "child killer" as the award was never put in the game.
Actually I remember that. They made a joke about that in Vault City. When someone says "do you know why theres no kids around" you can respond "because this is the European version of the game". Then you could donate sperm. Good times. The American version definately had kids and the child killer perk in it though.

Is it wrong that I find that image funny?
If it is, I don't want to be right!

I can see why it would be controversial but damn it, it was meant to be shocking. Killing children in a world where the human population of a town is measured in the dozens is a shocking thing. Sometimes something shocking is needed.

For those saying it wasn't put in the game:

I sort of remember it being in there, not this icon though and I can't remember what they did put instead. Or... maybe I am remembering fallout 1. In any case I remember it did a baaad thing to your game, even bugged some of the dialogue, and you ended up with head hunters trying to kill you.

<------ As you can see i am already making good use of this image. it makes me laugh.
i know, i'm going to hell
That's awesome. +2 coolness for you!
Have fun explaining it down the road though, when you run into folks unaware of the image's history and think you're a sick freak.

This is pathetic. The guy who draws these things for a game that's already so ridiculously gory and intentionally offensive "can't believe [he] drew this".
Everyone has their own personal boundaries? I wouldn't call that pathetic, just interesting. It may be odd that I find his perspective kinda sweet and down to earth...

Since I was going to hell anyway, all laughing at this sort of thing does is just get me an express ticket. Dark humor at it's finest/worst.

I'm not gonna lie, I laughed. Hard.

I'm also against the inability to shoot the kids in Fallout 3. I know that sounds like a horrible statement... but it's just so watered down in extreme vulgarity when compared to Fallout 2... what with the omission of the Prostitute, Porn Star, & Pimp careers and all.

Shut up, you know you enjoyed them. Some people are so repressed.

I'd draw a blood-soaked Vault Boy holding a lollipop and an upturned baby carriage behind him.

Nowhere as visually striking, seven times as disturbing.

I'd call it pathetic that people find this so much more offensive than the other virtual slaughter Fallout is famous for. People seem to have a very poor grasp on reality and context when it comes to controversy.

Wait, what? Because I don't find a cartoon of a pregnant woman being kicked in the stomach hilarious I either have no sense of humour or I'm being deliberately antagonistic?
I'm just gunna stop right here. Clearly if I point something out to you I'll either get in trouble for it or prolong an "OMG TEH INTERWEBS" war longer than it has to go on. Either that or I'll just be pushing your buttons. None of which is necessary.

Equal parts disturbing and amusing.

Possibly would frown on this if it wasn't for the happy look on his face...you reach for those stars little guy!
