"malware installed by unwitting people clicking on bad links"

Let me get this straight, IE protects your computer against you? Firefox user here and haven't install any malware/virus for a couple years now. So much for 15 days.

This just seems like it's IE going, "I'm sorry Dave, I can't let you do that." Most of the prevention is going to be in the form of a broken link, or similar (like a page coming up saying bad link), assuming. So, how many actually links does it break to provide this protection?

I would have to really look into this 'study' just to see where the specifics are (because ALL studies have flaws and misleadings) but this sounds like an internet blocker. Like Bess at my old highschool.

Sorry, I like having full control over my system, mainly why I'm not a Mac user.

PS. Ah Bess, you blocked us from submitting homework but you let pornography get pass by doing an image search for 'duck'.

I have always liked IE. I never really noticed the performance hitches that other people seemed to dwell on. Then again, I don't expect a ton from my browser to begin with. To me, it's a simple window to the internet. I don't expect it to do much more than to allow me to browse and keep malware from setting up shop on my PC.

Microsoft sucks, therefore all it's products are are of suck.
IE 9 is already known to be fairly good. The problem is that it is vista+ only. XP users have no chance to get it, and that is pretty much taking a dump on a OS that still holds 30-70% of market shares, depending on individual countries, and people's security.
All to push sales.

So yeah, IE is best for remtards who can't be arsed to learn how to use the internet, but insist on doing so anyway.

Sorry, if you're the type of person who sees a "YOU R WINNAR OF IPODZ CLICK HEAR!!!1" popup and thinks it's a good idea to actually click there, you deserve what you get.

Also, I'd be interested to know if the Firefox test involved any of the numerous plugins which mitigate the risks of "socially engineered" malware.

Ao IE9 is good at something. Took long enough. That is one thing though, how is it vs the other browsers regarding speed(speed test of IE8 vs FF has FF outperfoming by 100%), ad ons(customisability), etc. There is more than one reason people switch browsers.

Edit: I forgot to mention trying to web design for IE. IE's inability to conform to any kind of standards is the most painful and unenjoyable part of web design.

IE has always sucked balls, the only reason i keep it on any of my machines is for when firefox has an organ-shitting-disease and needs to be reinstalled

The test is rather freaky.

Go to their site (nsslabs.com) and select the green button on the right, indicating the web browser group test for malware.

So let me get this straight: They added IE 9 and 8, witch are over 90% efficient, but they used Firefox 4 instead of 5 or 6? The test was done in Q2 2011. I'm pretty sure Firefox 5 was around, at the time. (I give this browser as an example since it's the one I use)

So IE is good for people who doesn't know how to stay away from malware. Ok. I'll still stick to Opera, though. It's faster.

Okay. I just came in here to say that there's no so such thing as Firefox 6.0. We're still on 4.2, and fuck you if you say otherwise.

Especially if you work at Mozilla.

Seriously Mozilla. I love you guys, and Firefox is totally my browser of choice, but why, out of all the things you could have blatantly stolen from Chrome, would you choose to steal their absolutely batshit insane version numbering system? That's stupid, and you're stupid for having done it.

Anyway, to say something on topic about the actual study: Duh. I've tried out IE9, and I still prefer Firefox, but the simple fact of the matter is that IE9 has always been a pretty good browser. It's faster than people think, it's safer than people think, and it's just generally made fun of because "M$ R EVAL!!1!" or "IE6 was terrible, so IE9 must be too!"

Am I recommending IE9 to anyone here? No, of course not. I believe that people on this site tend to be of the kind that can really make use of the more advanced customization options of Firefox and if you're using Chrome or *shudder* Safari then you've bought wholesale into those corporation's sales pitches and nothing I can say will ever reach you. (Okay fine. Chrome has some legitimate points in it's favor. I don't like it, but maybe you have a good reason to use it. I just think the cult of Google is starting to get almost as creepy as Apple cultists. Sorry.) Anyway, my point was that we (particularly those of us reading a thread about web browsers) don't represent typical internet users. Typical internet users could do far worse and not really any significantly better than IE9.

I use Chrome because of its easy features and small UI footprint and I know not to click on random links that might look suspicious, but if you have a grandmother or Auntie Sue who can't make such a judgement call, you could do a lot worse than making sure their laptop is running the most updated version of Internet Explorer.
I'd take it a step further, honestly... if you build a computer for granny, put kubuntu on it. If a computer is little more than a terminal and media center, Windows is a terrible choice in the first place... there's no need to repel malware with your browser if your OS is immune anyway.

Also, IE is still bloated... though firefox seems to have surpassed it in that regard. Which pretty much leads me to this conclusion: go chromium!

So this is based purely on clicking bad links?

I haven't done that in years so i'll stay with Firefox thanks.

I'm still baffled as to WHY there is still a browser war going on.

Why even try and compete? Who's making money off these free products?

Ummm... I run Ubuntu. It's impossible for me to get viruses anyway... why should I care that IE has good malware blocking abilities. I could write a program that does that, too--It just blocks every single link on the internet. Because, if you can't go to websites, you can't get viruses from them!

So let me get this article straight. A company releases a study about how IE9 isn't shit, gives results that look fake as fuck, and still IE9 is shit. I like my Firefox, because it has a host of addons and plugins that makes "warding of malware" 99 percent guaranteed.

I have used all the major browsers and always came back to Firefox because I find it has the best selection of plugins regarding script execution prevention. Chrome(when I used it) was lacking these, and IE I never fucking bother running, I update it because I am used to the old school days where Windows actually used IE for explorer windows(does it still do that?), and you could still be exploited.

EDIT:

XP is no longer the current OS why should a company continue to support an OS that should have already had support cut off if it wasn't for the Vista fuckup. People that continue to use XP should try Windows7 and take it seriously because it is much better OS that XP is.
