I'd stake a lot of money on Activision for this one, Kotick has shown that his greed knows no bounds.

Game developers in the UK have been trying to get business tax cuts for the local industry in order to bring it more in line with other places like Montreal for said that the deal was now off the table [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/89862-85-of-UK-Developers-Want-Tax-Breaks].
Can I just say that was a very well written piece on the UK Government, as I know it's difficult enough for us to understand at times. Thumbs up.

Erm.

............yeah Activision are a bit bastardy.......

*sighs* I almost feel that this again ties in with the whole thing of most adults still looking down on games as a crap medium.

Goddamit. Tax cuts would've been excellent. We need Labour back =/

Heh.

EDIT: Just got a good laugh. On that article someone posted:

It wasn't me

"Lol, dont look at me!"

I guess one of us could ask our local MP, while I don't know mine personally I do know he'd likely go hunting as he's a backbencher for the conservatives, so he's not as tied down as other higher ranking mps.

Worth a letter at least I guess, maybe while i'm writing I should ask what measures the UK can take to make sure Tim Langdell situations can never happen.

Anyone who thinks that game developers/publishers are yet powerful enough to lobby governments like this is in dire need of a reality check.
Are you kidding!? Games Companies have evil shadow companies that are evil and have implanted demon parts into themselves to use their dark magics on the material plane. World of Darkness says so.

Yeah, this stinks more of old people not understanding the financial benefits that video games would bring rather than some dark, evil cabal of international games publishers trying to keep the plucky UK Games Devs down. As much as that mental image makes me laugh.

There is an easy way to resolve this. Escapists living in Labour seats need to be writing to their MPs to get a question asked in Parliament.

While many here would like to think this is true, it makes more sense that it may be due to the incredibly unfair nature of the overall budget proposals.

Well, I think people aren't thinking this through in a lot of the responses. I think the British Goverment made the right desician overall.

Without know the exact publisher, understand that there is currently a trade war between the US and Europe, even if it's not the nastiest one in history. Simply put Europe wants the EU to be the dominant world power, at least economically, and the US which is currently a service based economy and the dominant economic power doesn't want this to happen. The back and forth between Wall Street and the European Common Market has been going on for a while now, and we've even had snide referances in movies with bad guys demanding payment in "Euros, because the dollar isn't what it used to be" coming into popular culture.

While other nations give developers tax breaks, the UK is one of the greater global powers (though not a super power) and also a close ally of the US, despite out mixed relations with other parts of Europe. Despite the trade war we've remained relatively cordial, and closely allied in a military and political sense. While not one of the biggest industries, the gaming industry is a large, multi-billion dollar one, and by doing this it would give UK developers a substantial advantage, and mean more globally. This would of course cause the US and perhaps other affected nations to retaliate in a fashion that would give us more of an advantage in trade against the UK. Effectively bringing the UK more directly into economic competition/warfare with the US than it already is, and probably damaging our relations. All pressure about "The War On Terror" aside, neither the US or UK are fair weather friends to each other, and all differances aside can pretty much rely on each other when it really hits the fan despite political pressure. Tension on that alliance for economic reasons would benefit neither party.

Of course this is based entirely on what was said above, and is written assuming that it is fundementally correct in that such a desician would give UK publishers a major advantage.

While people are screaming due to their love of gaming, you need to ask whether more UK video games entering the market (entertainment) is worth the problems this could cause in the long run? Once stuff like this starts happening, it's inevitable it's going to domino into other industries and we're going to wind up in an economic knife fight.

Please also note I am not saying that the UK "needs" the US in any overreaching fashiom, and can't get by without us. Simply that in the end the alliance is worth a lot more than any short term economic gain. It moves back and forth for whom it's inconveinent for at the moment, but generally benefits everyone in the big picture, and this alliance in paticular helps with the oomph of both powers because it's known that if someone messes with the UK in a major fashion the US will back them up, and if someone messes with the US we can rely on having the UK at our back.

Enough rambling, these are my thoughts. Bad for video games (which I love), but probably a good thing overall.

Bullcrap. The Lib-Cons gain no popularity for lowering game developer taxes, and they're trying to raise taxes/lower spending at the moment to repay the deficit. Blame Activision all you want, simple truth is there're new players in town.

Doesn't really fit with the supposed Conservative ideal of using your own initiative, making your own business, Big Society etc. Who embodies that ideal more than game devs? But then again, when did parties ever actually stick to their principles once in power?

EDIT: I also LOVE the argument a Major Publisher (Omg) supposedly used; it would give the UK industry an unfair advantage. Think for a second. Can you see that argument flying in America?

Sorry, we can't keep taxes on business low. Why? It gives America an unfair edge on the rest of the world. We know this because Richard Branson told us. Why no, I don't believe he has a special interest here.

This rumour sounds...just ridiculous.
The problem with representative governments in general right now is your political analysis of the current situation and the claims of Develop Online is one word counters anything anyone could ever say. Lobbyists.

Why when I read this did I think "EA did it"?

OT: Anyway, just a rumor. If it's true, then it's time to arm ourselves and hit the streets, if not than we where all fouled.

As soon as I read this I knew of one that was so evil to do it and has the power and money to do so.

Begins with an M and ends with a Soft.
