Anything by Porcupine Tree. Awesome band and quite emotional music. Personally recommend the albums Fear of a Blank Planet and In Absentia.

Wham! - The Wham Rap.

This brings a tear to my eye.
It really sums up the progression and lifestyle of our young generation and really sums up who we are.

"Hey jerk, you work! This boys got better things to do!"

Oh I thought of another one. The Perfect Element by Pain of Salvation. I recommend listening to the entire album in one sitting since it's just such a masterpiece.

Emotionally complex, he said

Chew on this:

Swallow this one whole, no chewing:

Yes, they both have vocals/lyrics... but if you haven't heard of either of them before... if you like it and explore, you'll find some tracks without annoying human mutterings.

Enjoy.

First off, listen to that whole album and the soundtrack to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, along with Ghosts I-IV by Nine Inch Nails. It's all pretty similar stuff.

Damn, you guys have good taste. Half my suggestions are already gone. But anyway, try these:

As for what I feel listening to the one you posted, I... genuinely can't describe it. It's kind of ominous and tense, but also quite warm and comforting at the same time. So I don't know.

I'm gonna go ahead and give a little shout out to Rodrigo y Gabriela (this particular song also features C.U.B.A.). Without leaning on a lyrical crutch they manage to produce much more emotionally profound music than a lot of what you hear these days. Haunting spanish guitar, just damn beautiful. I'll let it speak for itself.

The whole track is worth a listen, but skip to 6:10 for the most powerful part if you must.

Been listening to this a lot recently, when I can't sleep.

That one's really more a visually emotional performance, but it's strangely cathartic to listen to.

it's disappointment, loneliness, the sad one, when you do something, and suddenly you realize that nobody really cares, and you could as well not do it at all, and nobody would notice, you could as well not set your foot outside, ever, and notbody would mind, miss you. the passive anger in the background, "it's not fair! how is it that basically anybody else WOULD be missed, that anyone's else actions matter, and their inaction would be noticed? I want that privilege too! How is it that people consider it to be such a common thing? It's not!".
the anger fades into unease, your throat tightens (i mean that feeling, can't remember how it's called properly), and you feel like you're going/you want to cry, but you can't, it just doesn't come, and you just stare mindleslly. slowly, all the feelings and thoughts fade away, and you're left an empty, cold, dark shell.

...i have seen the movie, but I'm pretty sure the song would make me feel the same even if I haven't.

btw, watch the movie, it's pretty good, IMO.

about the part of giving recommendations... I don't really dare to say what is an "emotionally complex" piece, I think my perception of something like this is mostly different from most people, and I'm not willing to expose it for possibly being challenged. BUT, Massive Attack should generally fall into this cathegory, almost anything by them.

...BUT... reminded by the Mad World posted here by someone, there's one song that makes chills go down my spine, and I'd gladly and immediately tear apart anyone who said it was not emotionally strong and complex (yes, more so if you've seen the movie, but only because it compiles all the feelings from the movie itself, and to me, it's strong, confusing, manifold: beautiful, scary, sad, noble, cathartic yet solving/ending nothing really, dramatic while completely peaceful, it makes me want to cry and smile at the same time, makes me thing "i understand" while thinking "what the fuck was that?" at the same time... first time I heard it, i REALLY cried, because it HURT immensely, the song physically hurt, and I said about it the same I said about the movie: "It's horrible, cruel, sad and it hurts. I hate it. It's one of the best songs I've ever heard and it's always going to be one of my all-time favorites.")
Enjoy:

(P.S. how the hell do you embed videos directly into the post? i can't remember or find instructions anywhere)

I'm a big music buff, up to the point I went into musical theory in college, and I've been mulling this over.

When you say emotionally complex, what do you mean? When most people say it they mean 'melancholic' or 'strong emotions'. But when I think emotional complex music, I get a blank. All music is emotionally complex. Happiness and joy are all just as much emotions. Even something as simple as 'banana phone' can inspire complex joy in a person.

And a lot of what has been posted seems to fall in the former category. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, since yes, it is emotionally charged music across the board, even if it leans towards one side of the emotional spectrum.

For something different, check out the soundtrack for the movie "Oh! What a Lovely War!". You can find almost all the Oh! What a Lovely War! songs in this YouTube account: http://www.youtube.com/user/OhWhataLovelyWar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eih67rlGNhU This one has always spoken to me personally, especially recently with events in the U.S. and abroad.
I guess I'm talking about music which seems to invoke emotions which are juxtaposed. Happy and sad at the same time. Calm but with a sense of menace. There aren't too many examples I can think of directly but the one I posted in the OP seems to do the closest thing in my ears...
