I'm a regular gamer, as in play every day. Unfortunately I only have the ps2, working on getting a 360 but in the meantime I borrowed Resident Evil 4 from a friend to keep me busy.

Anyway, I only just started, I'm in the village ( 1st main level where loads of dudes come at you) and I keep dying and getting owned. Now before everyone says I just suck, I own at all my other games, gta san andreas Need for Speed etc etc but I just cant get the hang of RE4. The controls feel wonky and I just seem to panic.

Is there any advice for just helping me get my game on? Or am I just doomed to suck at it?

All Comments are appreciated, thank you

Hide in the house, use the pistol to shoot out their legs as they come and knife them (saves ammo) or you can shoot them, but taking out their legs makes them stop coming at you for a moment. Save the shotgun you get in that house, second floor I think, for the chainsaw. There is also a grenade in the cabinet at the top of the stairs. Save that for the chainsaw.

If you keep using the pistol to shoot out their legs as they come in, you should be able to grenade them all and the chainsaw dude, hitting everything with shotgun spread, easily winning.

**also**, stand next to the bed on the second floor in the nook between it and the stairs, facing the windows, so you can hit things. Don't bother with the ladder, and make sure to blockade the house on entering so you can crash the barrels and such. Practice that strat, I can do it on professional, blindfolded at this point I've done it so much hehe.

I got massacred the first time I played RE4 at my mate's house. Though I was pretty drunk on post-exam cider...

My advice to you is to sober up, or dont start drinking if you are sober. There is a timer during the section you are stuck at, you just have to hold on until the timer runs out.

Thoug villagers attack on sight, there's a certain house you go into that'll trigger a cutscene which is when the timer starts - it's the house with the shotgun inside. So get in there before you start killing people or you're just wasting ammo.

Keep moving, barricade what you can, kick down any ladders and reserve the shotgun for knocking the chainsaw guy over.

On a different note; does anyone want to play RE5 with me on the 360? I want to play through the campaign in co-op mode...

Timed event. Keep moving, running and stay alive for like 4-5 minutes... and watch out for the chainsaw guy. Find the shotgun if you can.

All I can think of is the RE5 manual, page 23. "Shoot your opponent in the leg. Run up and press x. UPPERCUT!!" Mixed with the picture, it's almost hysterical. The lesson is to shoot your opponents in the face and press the proper button. Not only will it hurt them a bit, but it also knocks around everyone him, buying you time.

Omg hahaha, your funny... not
I don't think he was being funny. Some people genuinely forget to not die. JFK forgot to tap 'x' during a quicktime event and got killed before the end of the second level. Which is a shame after he got the high score on the 'Cuban Missile Crisis' level.

If you don't go into the house with the shotgun, then the chainsaw guy never turns up, so you can hide in a different house, keep killing and wait for them to leave, then grab the shotgun

OK, now that's good.

Right, general tips to give you a helping hand:

Try to avoid headshots, early on they result in quick kills but it isn't long before they come back to haunt you.

Use shotguns whenever you can, they usually kill enemies in one or two shots and are easy to aim.

Raise as much money as you can, the upgrades and items you buy will save your life on more than one occasion.

If you have the time then try to finish off enemies with the knife when they're on the ground.

When you are joined by Ashley it is usually a good idea to leave her in a safe place and clear the surrounding area

Hope they help you out.

Agreed, very clever.. I was really trying to think of another person who forgot to "press X not to die" but I'm drawing a blank.. someone give me a couple, I could do with a good laugh

RE4 is a difficult game for some, but my advice would be keep trying different things until you see a definate improvement, then use it and keep trying.

P.S do not take a very what someone into a dark room at night and play RE4 unless you like the smell of....

ALSO later on in the game you will find jewels and such that will fit into another object, which will be worth much much more when combined. For example X = headdress o b d all = gems of different colors X + o = more than X / o sold separately X + o + b + d = massive increase in value than what it would be sold seaprately.

ok go up and us ethe binoculars. after that go behind the houses to your left stay left and knife or shoot the female Ganado. keep runing forward then make a right and another right to go into the house. after the cutscene put the book case in front of th window, break the barrels and head up stairs. grab the shotgun ammo and the grenade. knock down the ladder and then runn over to the window where the ganados are use the shottie to blow it out knockingback the ganados. jump out and run to your right make a right turn and another right turn untill you reach the spinnel pick it up and turn around. now the only way they will come after you is the way you came. so use the hand gun to take out the ganados and when the chainsaw comes out use the shotgun on him and the grenade when he's down. you can beat this part bystanding here and killing, but if you run out of ammo turn around head across teh street open the door and go into the back room and camp there. thats how i do it every time.

I let my friend borrow it and he didn't know that you can run. I think on the PS2 if you hold down X you can run.
Open doors faster by pressing the button twice.
Clear space by shooting guys in the face and then using the prompted melee attacks.
There is a two story house with a fence around it, run inside, it will start a cinematic. Leon will automatically block off entrances and on the second floor you can find the shotgun and, I believe, some grenades. A chainsaw madman will attack you automatically now. If you're smart and conserve ammo you can kill him with the shotgun. You get a crapload of money for doing that.
Buy the treasure maps from the Merchant. Do not buy the shotgun from him. You can get it for free from the house I just mentioned.
Learn to love flash grenades. They will be very useful later on. For shock value reasons, I can't tell you why.
Hope this helps.

The most important thing in Resi 4 (and 5) when being swarmed is to keep moving.

Shoot a zombie (ganado whatever bla bla) in the leg or head and move in to perform a melee attack, then use your quick turn and run away far enough to turn back and get in a few more shots. Rinse and repeat.

Also there is a choke point if you run upstairs in the house, get the shotgun, hop out the window on to the roof and run around to the right. You can buy yourself some time here which is essential as all you have to do here is survive for a certain length of time, not kill everyone.

THE GOOD NEWS IS... like Resi 5 the first chapter is one of the toughest in the whole game. Get through the villages and you'll have a good feel for the mechanics of the games.
