I really hate the sound of breakable knives though...
You already had breakable knives in RE2Remake. RE3Remake gave you a permanent knife, the power was nerfed, unless you knew all of your perfect dodge timings. RE4Remake allows you to upgrade the durability of your knife. Doing a perfect parry costs no durability, unless Dr. Salvador, the Bella Sisters, and probably few other mini boss type monsters along the way. It's way to keep things balanced, as the knife is already powerful to begin with. Yahtzee is crying over nothing. His ranting is just another, "they changed, now it sucks!" while acting as if it's the worse thing in the world!

EDIT: Wah!wah!wah! It's serviceable! Wah!wah!wah! The remake is "too serious" and removes "too many" iconic moments! Wah!wah!wah! It's "too homogenized"! Not surprised in the slightest, nor do I care. I'll be off having fun when l get and play the game.
See, that's funny. I watched a couple of reviews and the meticulously curated in-game videos Capcom would allow some of the reviewers to show (as opposed to just letting them show themselves playing the game.) And then I watched the ZP episode. And basically just found myself agreeing with Yhatzee on many of his observations, or he was observing something I hadn't seen or watched anybody else comment on. I couldn't agree on his point that Luis is better in the remake, because none of the lets plays or reviews I've seen have shown (or been allowed to show) any of the Luis content. Apparently Capcom isn't particularly proud of those bits. But in the end, his take that it is RE4 with the edges sanded off... is the same conclusion I've been led to by the hype for a month or so already. I think I'll just load up my PC copy of the original. Frankly nothing I've seen so far makes me think I'll be missing anything by enjoying it that way. That's why I still enjoy ZP, it cuts right through the fanboy "10/10, best game evar, anyone else is just a hatarz" nonsense and lets me really know when something is just going to be "meh, nothing special."

That's both of your opinions, but I don't consider the edges sanded off. Look, I can respect the original, but as I've pointed out years ago: the original RE4's praising goes way overboard. I know have not played the game yet, but a few changes one stop nor deter me from enjoying and judging the game on its own merits.

I think I'll just load up my PC copy of the original.
Whatever makes you happy. You still give it a chance and don't let Yahtzee, nor anyone influence from playing or not.

I wouldn't go that far. All Yahtzee has been doing is being a "purist" fan boy on the opposite side of the coin. He ain't special, and he ain't the only one with this problem who takes it further than a person should (Don't worry, I am not referring to you). I already know RE4Remake is not going to be 10/10 or 11/10 for me, if I bothered to use numbers. The original RE4 wasn't 10 for me either, and score would go down further me today. RE4Remake is getting rid of bad QTEs and making Leon and the monster 10xs more capable than ever before. You'll have zero complaints coming from me in this regard. The game is going to be a low Full Price rating at worst for me and that's it.

Sucks Capcom couldn't bother with a midnight release for this game, but streamers are allowed to show the game off right now! That's the only thing I do not like about this.

Well I have opinions.

The game is as much a remake as it is a remix. It doesn't just retool combat and movement, it also plays around with your expectations by moving around items, traps, enemies, mini-bosses, story beats, etc. Broadly speaking it's more or less the same, but deceptively so; for me anyway I keep getting lulled into a sense of security until the game suddenly decides to do something radically different.

Leon feels somewhat slower, maybe to balance the fact that he can move and shoot now, though I never had a problem holding my ground while shooting before. The game is kinda built around picking a spot and playing tower defense at intervals anyway.

I got decimated several times during the village attack. When I finally ran the clock successfully I didn't even get to kill any of the Salvadors. Either it's way harder now or I'm rusty as hell.

The sidequests are kinda 'gamey' (kill 3 rats, kill 3 snakes) and usually involve you just plodding around the area you just traversed. You cash them in for spinels, which work as premium currency against pesetas. I'm generally loaded with herbs and handgun bullets but short as hell on cash. The ammo crafting I don't really need, but I keep doing it to make room in the case.

I think my biggest gripe is the knife. The knife breaks after a while and has to be mended for cash at the Merchant's; you also happen to keep collecting MORE knives which break even faster (like two QTE uses or so). More often than not I'm running around with a bunch of broken knives. This sucks because you can't even use them on mantraps or locks or glass cases until you repair at least one.

Insta-death QTEs have been removed and replaced either with enemy ambushes or cutscenes without the Press X To Not Die. Fair enough.

There's Evil Within style tripwire disarming, but don't get anything from it, except making the world a safer place.

Second biggest gripe: you don't get a free refill when you upgrade ammo capacity anymore. What a bummer. At least I don't have to worry about reloading an empty gun before upgrading it anymore, but it was a fun game to play on top of the game to never reload the shotgun or the rifle except at the Merchant's.

For story, it's just RE4 but with less personality. I miss the Sam Raimi energy. And weird nitpick but the cutscenes are very dully blocked. When Leon's looking outside the cabin during the village attack we get a dull wide shot of zombies approaching, followed by a closeup of Salvador's chainsaw revving up. You already see Salvador and his chainsaw in the wide shot, so the closeup adds nothing. In the original this is instead a POV shot that's nervously looking outside the cabin before landing and zooming in on the chainsaw. The escalation and reveal work way better.

Is the dialogue neutered like it was in the VR version? i.e. does the presidents daughter still come equipped with ballistics, or does Ashley still call you a pervert when you look up at her when she's at the top of a ladder?

I do know you can't look up Ashley skirt anymore, because the way she's dressed now. As for the ballistics line, I'm sure it has been changed but it isn't obviously censored like it was in the VR version. I saw a few early hours of Max's playthrough, and Leon still has the cool, dorky, and badass quippy lines. If you're expecting every single facet to be like the original, then you might as well stick with that.

I don't usually play remakes, I'm just curious. Also it looks like she is still wearing a miniskirt, so I'm not sure why it'd be different.

  1. We are in the 2020s now.
  2. Ashley is 15 20 years old.
  3. Her mini skirt comes with pant leggings/pantyhose.
  4. You couldn't look underneath Jill skirt costume when it was unlocked or bought with DLC in the Resident Evil 3 Remake. You have to mess with the games camera files in the PC version in order to look underneath.

I'm not quite there yet. From what I've played so far I would assume no.
Leon still has one-liners (Where's everyone going, bingo?) but most of them are conveyed as generic taunts as he fights enemies while kicking ladders or pulling headshots. In cutscenes he's still a try hard but the dialogue isn't as colorful. Example: Luis sees Méndez and says "Oh no it's him" instead of "Great, the big cheese". And instead of trying to Matrix him, Leon simply... I don't even remember what he does.
I can't say the campy personality is 100% gone but they toned it the hell down. Fortunately the Merchant survived more or less intact.

Played a few hours and.... it's pretty alright, but I kinda miss the snappy, arcade-y shooting action of the original. The OG was sort of perfect in that regard; the action was fast and crisp without ever losing the punchy impact of the gunplay or confusing the player with flashiness.

The remake has a certain slugishness to its controls that I have not yet really found a way to work with satisfactory. I find myself aiming more through strafing then actually aiming with the stick. I've fiddled around with the sensitivity, but I can't get a decent set-up going. I even tried the motion aiming option (which did wonders for me on TLoU2), but so far I haven't gotten much out of it neither.

I feel like this game really needs some form of dodge for the many long lunges enemies have. You can parry with your knife, but it's durability makes you (or well, me at least) want to avoid using it. Again, the original was quite a lot simpler and more satisfying when it comes to the knife. Sure, you couldn't contextually stab or upgrade the damage, but its use was solid and trustworthy.

I'm playing on Hardcore and a couple of areas kicked the shit out of me. The first was obviously the village section, which I had a way harder time with then in the demo, but then I guess the demo was on Normal. The second was the gorge section, where I thankfully found a very good corner/bottleneck to take care of most of the enemies. However, it would just spawn enemies at certain points, not just after having picked key items. There's a moment where, after I went up an upwards pathway, I could see an enemy appear literally out of thin air. And it was during what seemed like the final stage of the onslaught that an enemy would just seemingly come out of nowhere and bring me down to a sliver of health.

There's some neat switch-a-rooing with the level lay-out and other super recognizable instances for fans of the original.

So is it me or enemy drops don't fade away after a while anymore? I sniped a few in the gorge before dropping down for the obligatory fight and by the end enemy drops seemed to be around from 5 or 10 minutes ago.

No, I don't think so, thank God.

By the way, what the hell is 'duck' even for? It isn't used for anything other than the one enemy you can stealth kill in bigger areas - afterward every other enemy will spot you and get the hornets nest going, at which point duck becomes useless - or for the ocassional, obligatory 'duck under this thing to progress'. It's not a movement option that feels fun or handy in any way, it just feels like it's there cuz 'look, Leon can duck now when he couldn't before, and stealth is sort of a thing in games, right?' Even the explossive tripwires you can just disarm without even needing to duck under them. 🤷‍♂️

Doing a perfect parry does not affect the durability of the knife. All I got to say is that as soon as you can upgrade the knifedurability as fast as possible. That's what Max did an hour into his playthrough. It was also shown that can happen in the demo.

I know people have a preference, but that's why I'm just going to start on normal. I'll do my hardcore run later.

For dodging high wide swings and ducking underneath axes or sickles thrown at you. Sometimes the duck button will have a button prompt pop up for certain attacks

I've heard, but it means juggling between knife durability and risk of health loss whenever an enemy goes for an attack. So I tend to just try and not let it get to that point. I have uprgraded the knife more than any other weapon so far though.

Probably should've just had a dedicated dodge, because the duck - and how rudimentary its animated and implemented - doesn't exactly come across as a proper means of avoiding attacks. I don't know, maybe it actually works wonders, but so far I've not been given much trust in it.
