I never really associated old SNES JRPGs with Japan.

The other RPGs, the ones not made by japan, sucked.

the ones that happened to come out of Japan, were good.

But I don't look at any of the original Final Fantasy games (all the way to 6) and think "THIS COMES FROM JAPAN"

JRPG means something different in todays lexicon than it did back in the 80s and 90s.

Maybe not a majority, but take a look through the threads and you'll see plenty of venom spewed toward JRPGs from WRPG fans. Many wish them to die.
The vocal minority is always the worst. Just like how I imagine the Final Fantasy series is in no way representive of the JRPG genre as a whole. Personally though, I doubt I would be able to get into a JRPG, I much prefer the Western style.

Although I seriously think we need to toss JRPG and WRPG as genre titles, list them under something like stat-based and choice-based games or something, I unno, just to get rid of this whole debate.

I think people are discounting the rise of the MMORPG, or just online gaming as a whole. As far as I can tell most JRPGs don't seem to have a lot of multiplayer elements and cooperative play is extremely popular nowadays (FPS's seem to be doing very well).
