RIP Vvardenfell

Vvardenfell did have some cool places. I will miss the variety of architecture. I will miss Vivec City. I will miss the stilt striders. I am saddened by the fact that many of the people in Balmora that I could name off the top of my head (I'm talking to you Hul, Nalcarya, Habasi) will either be dead or scattered.

Most importantly, I will miss the Dwemer ruins. O, I lament for thee Nchuleftingth, Mzuleft, Nchurdamz, and the others. You will be missed dearly, as the diverse expanse that was the island of Vvardenfell become that which is no more.

Actually, the Emperor Crab was long gone before the Ministry hit, they resurrected [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=POTD.Detail&id=3826] and then lost it in the battle for Ald'Ruhn against the Daedra.

Yeah, I heard someone say that in Oblivion. It sucks that Ald'ruhn was wiped out, but just thinking about the Emperor Crab and a Dunmer army fighting off a Daedric horde, even unsuccessfully, is about the most awesome thing ever, ever.

I know not everything I mentioned was directly destroyed by the impact, but the whole impact/eruption pretty much sealed the deal in the whole 'Up yours, Morrowind" that fate had in store for the province.

I heard once that calamity strikes the setting of every Elder Scrolls game after the game's events, but I never really got any confirmation on this. Does anyone know if things went sideways for Daggerfall and wherever the first game was set?

Vivec froze it in time. It's explicty supposed to still have all the speed and force as a comet. But it's frozen as long as Vivec keeps it that way.

Fuck that. If the meteor was "frozen in time" there shouldn't have been any way to mine it out and construct a friggin government office inside it. Much less wooden walkways (that should've burst into flame, as the act of freezing it in time would preserve it's heat from re-entry).

Vivec being the half-god he was, that story always sounded like him trying to insist he has more power than he really did. Fucking arrogant prick he was. I always figured he picked the rock up from somewhere, and coasted it into position during the night. Then when everyone woke up he was all like, "I ju27 24v3d j00!!1" ... but I guess false gods using tricks, smoke, and mirrors to over-represent their actual abilities to guarantee themselves lives of eternal luxury and power is better writing than bethesda could ever be capable of.

This is why hacks (of the authorial variety) shouldn't be allowed within thirty pages of "magic." They take it way too far and think simply because they can write it, its plausible. If he froze it in time, hit it with an ice spell (to cool it) and something further to allow it to be burrowed out so a government agency could be established within it, the he also should've slowed it down a bit, on the off chance dagoth ur suceeded in leeching all the power from the heart. But no, that would be good writing. Can't have that in a Bethesda game. Can't have a dude who's hundreds of years old possess any level of foresight.

I can't wait for the next game that takes place in my backyard!

I wonder if TES5 will follow on that story. I'd like to know what happened. I don't really consider TES books to be canon, just games.

I know this sounds a bit callous, looking at the public outcry at this, but I don't quite get what the big deal is. They are unlikely to make another game there and its not like they are going to delete all your Morrowind games so that you can never visit it again.
Anyways, so far most people have only really seen 2 out of the 9 provinces. The things that could be in the remaining 7 is potentially just as interesting as Vvardenfell. It might be time to start looking Elsweyr.

Anyways, if you are into your lore, mightn't this disaster create some new, interesting lore to be explored?

Vicec is a god. Not a false god, someone who is actually a god. True, he's not all-powerful, but still a god. That's the point of the game, Azura plotting to punish the Tribunal for breaking pacts to become gods. Dagoth Ur was only a coincidence.

Vivec kept it in place because he's pretty damn powerful. When all the safeguards to keep the thing up died, well... Boom.

Vivec's powers were supplied in whole by the heart of the mountain (if thats what it was called, been a while). He was a false god because his godhood could be removed, was being removed, and by the end of the game, was on the fast track to being removed. He grabbed power, then made a lot of showy gestures to keep it. Gestures which you can't know whether or not were genuine, because you really only had his word to go by, and its not like hes in a position to self-depreciate. I ignored azura bitching about vivec's power grab, because what the hell could she do? She was a real god, sure, but she wasn't corporeal.

But this is kinda pointless, because I realize now I was reading too far into the story. The idea of casius being pseudo-exiled for being a moonsugar addict sent me into a level of hardcore "story mining" the writing just wasn't built to withstand. I broke story broke around me and thought it was awesome because of it. I also read a bit too far into the fact that killing vivec had the result of the ministry of truth not moving an inch. But I liked what I read into the story so much that I just ignored the fact I was supposed to take the story at face value and not question too much.

Aye, probably best to end this before it starts a flame war. Truth is, the story could go any which way. Bethesda either adds a lot of folklore into in-game storytelling to make things more gray, or they like to screw with Lore Junkies.

There's been a lot of big changes to popular fantasy settings lately. Think about WoW's cataclysm and the nuke on D&D's Forgotten Realms. I guess they just want to keep them interesting.

Personally, I learnt to stop caring. When I pop in my Morrowind disc, Vvardenfell is still alive and well on my screen. Same thing with past Warcraft and D&D games.

This abomination could both swim and fly. They quickly killed off the majority of their parent species, which incidentally made it much easier for Jiub to drive off the remaining cliff racers earning his saintly status. The Slaughterracers quickly overrun the majority of cities and only a few underground refuges were safe from their mindless killing. The only surface city to remain intact was Vivec, which was protected by Lord Vivec's immense power. This would not last forever, however. After slowing dying of starvation and disease, Vivec quickly decreased in population. Eventually Vivec himself faltered, letting the thousands of Slaughterracers that waited around the city inside. The horde quickly overcame the Ordinators and Lord Vivec. Upon Vivec's death the Ministry of Truth fell causing the mentioned events. The eruption of the Red mountain killed off the majority of the Slaughterracer population. It is often said that some were lurking the seas during the eruption. None have been sighted as of yet, so it is assumed that they either died off or are lurking the seas; watching... Waiting to reemerge.

Morrowind was probably the first RPG I ever played. It left such an impression on me with it's scale and depth. It was truely an epic game.

Arena spanned the entirety of Tamriel, Daggerfall was the entirety of, well, Daggerfall, Redguard was set in Hammerfel, though only an island off its coast, Morrowind was in, well, Morrowind and then 'Blivyun's got Cyrodill. That's three provinces, a survey of the entire continent, with Hammerfel a'la mode. And there's battlespire, too, but that's less lore and more firebolts 'n swords 'n stuff.
And they were going to make the Eye of Argonia, but they kinda put a hold on their whole, "Side story revolving around each race" thing.

If you didn't know this, it means that you're probably not familiar with the rest of the Elder Scrolls series. Which isn't bad at all, it just means you're going to have to do something about this.

Rumour says that its set in Skyrim, which should be less Generic than Oblivion.

I could have sworn I heard something about Ald'Ruhn getting overrun by creatures from Oblivion. To be honest, there was never really much there other than rocks and dirt anyway, I'd think that the cities further towards the coast would have survived.
