I'm no fan of multiplayer...

..but didn't Bioware have some multiplayer capabilities in both Baldur's Gate & Neverwinter Nights.... if so... why is everyone so damn surprised?

As long as multiplayer isn't required to enjoy the game, and I can still have a great single player experience... I don't care.

... if it comes to a Dragon Age MMO... I'll bow out of that. TOR will be my one and only MMO (maybe)... don't push it, please.

I shouldn't be surpirsed to see people reacting the exact same way they did to Mass Effect, but I am since that turned out fine. This knee-jerk reaction to multiplayer is strange.

Didn't Jim Sterling just say Skyrim was proving the games industry wrong? Seems like EA is going NYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! and ignoring the fact that they've been proven wrong.

Welcome to Modern Dragonfare 3.

Along with Mass Effectfield 3.

Well the one good thing to come along with Mass Effect getting multiplayer is I get to save a bit of money by not buying it. Yes it's optional but it is also pointless for a series that hasn't needed it before and i'm not paying my money to support stupid decisions.

Dragon Age I gave up with anyway. DA2 was "okay" but nothing to jump up and down and shit smarties over.

If there is any truth to the rumours then it doesn;t look like decisions have gone in the right direction so that game would probably be worth missing as well.

When will they learn that people don't play RPGs for multiplayer? A less than par Dragon Age I can forgive, so can I with a co-op feature in ME3, but PvP? Really? No, just no. This better not be true.

Im not calling for blood untill this is actually proven

and even then, I HOPE Bioware hasnt gone off the rails...I liked ME2 so I have no reason to be worried about ME3 anyhow

DA2 sucked anyway; BioWare can do whatever the hell they like with the franchise after that steaming pile.

I'll continue supressing my rage over ME3's multiplayer shlock.

These are only the trial balloons. They know that Bioware fans hate them and Left 4 Dead Space didn't catch on. No. The next franchise to turn into Call of Duty is painfully obvious.

story co-op, I could get into, PvP, no.
You took the words right out of my mouth. I would LOVE a really good system to co-op with my friend, but fight him or others? Not even a little. Please Bioware, stop with this multiplayer nonsense.

I literally just want to cry right now.
It's just a rumor.

OT:

Oh look, a rumor that seems to be pretty tailor made to piss people off.

Honestly, it's most likely false.
Just like the Mass Effect multiplayer was a rumor that was most likely false?

He shoots he scores!
One rumor turned out to be true.

Doesn't mean ALL THE RUMORS! will.

The sad part is that when I thought of fighting dragons, Skyrim came to mind.

You'd think Dragon Age would have that market under control.

Anyway, as long as they don't mess up the whole single player experience, I could care less. I will probably buy it used and I won't buy the Online Pass at all (If it needs one). Hey, I've been doing fine playing Dragon Age 1 and 2 by myself. I think I can handle it.

Thanks, Captcha error. Thanks for being so cryptic and giving me a double post. Thanks a lot.

Needless to say, disregard this post. -_-

With Dragon Age, multiplayer has to be completely optional[footnote]As in, it doesn't enhance your experience, except for, of course, playing with a friend.[/footnote] and possibly only co-op.

Good point, it's true that multiplayer improves the extendability of a title and the publisher would be interested in this.
I stand by my disapproving of Bioware's decision in the skills department. There is much less versatility in they're later games. KOTOR and NWN had so many interesting feats and abilities within each class that creating your build was an integral part of the experience and changed the gameplay as you progressed. Recent games have been more of the ilk of choose your path, here's what you are.
They've continued their high quality of writing and world building but that aspect of customisation was one of my favorites and without it combat is less exciting for me and combat accounts for a large part of the game.
I suppose by adding multiplayer perhaps they may focus in on the choice and customisation aspects in regards to skills to keep that interesting so that maybe a shining light. More likely though that I'll move backwards through their catalog as they have plenty of games already which will satisfy my needs when it comes to character building.
I was fairly impressed with Dragon Age: Origins even if it was a more generic RPG than earlier titles like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights.

To be fair, however, a lot of the feats and such that you see in those games were created by Wizards of the Coast through their Dungeons and Dragons tabletop games, and not by Bioware, who actually snipped quite a few out and altered a few so they would work of the context of an active-combat-style RPG video game.
This is absolutely true. I want my cleave back! That bloody rocked for clearing out mobs. The older games were clearly attempts at creating a DnD style game, hence the settings of Neverwinter and Baldur's Gate which I think is a major fault of the newer games in that they stray from it. I felt like KOTOR was the perfect mix of engaging combat with control over a party of chars and the customization available from a DnD-esque game.

Yeah this is exactly what I thought of at first. Baldurs Gate and Neverwinter Nights were of course D&D games, which of course isn't a single player game. So you could play BG over LAN adding your friends to your party, and NWN with more advanced technology of course gave you a full world creating & DM toolkit.

That's the thing though. Bioware could simply announce that they're bringing multiplayer to Dragon Age the same way they did with Neverwinter Nights, and I'm sure their player base would applaud them for it. But from the announcement it doesn't seem to be anything of that sort, rather it seems they're saying 'EA believes every game should have multiplayer now, so we're tacking on a FPS like deathmatch mode to the game.' Of course we don't have full details yet and their could be more to it, but at the moment it looks like rather than any sort of previous old school Bioware multiplayer they're giving it the Dead Space 2 multiplayer treatment.

I will also join the bandwagon and state that I also have no interest whatsoever in a PvP mode in Dragon Age. What I want is a co-op campaign, as in NWN. BioWare's excuse for not doing this in DA:O was that the single player experience couldn't be as focused and involving if it's multi-player.

This is wrong. People can accept that one of the player will be the 'main' character while theirs is just a companion. Or you could go the way they did in SWTOR, all the players vote for the dialogue choices.

PvP/Arena is just a lazy way of saying "See? This game has a multiplayer component!" You just need to create a bunch of maps and throw players in. It takes much less efforts for the developer. Which makes it a lesser feature.

One day I'd like one of these guys to explain us how you can make lesser games with more money.

Aye! We want our Cleave! A few tweaks and you could kill everything within melee range.

Well it's hard to start from scratch and make a setting as incredible rich and detailed as the Forgotten Realms, which has been enriched over the decades with contributing ideas. I think the Dragon Age setting has potential - or at least did before EA got their hands on it.

Knights of the Old Republic is also based on the Wizards of the Coast Star Wars RPG; I really wish you could be some other race than a human in KOTOR. Gamorrean Jedi!

I really would have liked to see a game that covers a vast chunk of Faerun (the central continent in the Forgotten Realms setting), with a table-top battle system (turn based, following D&D rules) and gameplay. The point of the game isn't to play out a pre-made campaign (although one would be included), but to be a means for players to play D&D together, with all the benefits of a video game. The GM creates the campaign using a simple editor that allows him to pick a location and build from there, creating quests and plots, and if the players just wanna dive into a dungeon, the game would be packed with them, including famous dungeons created for the table-top editions.

That would be the perfect RPG.
