I'm not much for apples products, the majority are just pretty looking devices with average computing power sold at extortionate prices, apart from the ipod and iphone products, theyre quite powerful little devices that have pretty much dominated the mobile entertainment industry.

It's understandable.

At a time of high national unemployment, making a multi-millionaire foreigner "Lord Jobs" would have been highly inappropriate.
Hah, that made me laugh. I like it, I like it!

But, political correctness aside, why on earth was Jobs being considered? Because he had money? What has he been doing with it? Obviously not investing enough of it into the economy ;)

The Telegraph is a joke, nice reference to the need for evidence though.
Oh, and Gordon Brown was the prime minister of the UK (not just England) :p

Don't you have to be British to recieve a knighthood?
I think for a "real" (i.e one of the orders, there are different "levels") one you need to be a subject of the monarch, for example an Australian qualifies, we've had a few over the years, I think Canada has different rules on it actually, at least I read that somewhere.

However most anyone qualifies for an honorary, officially you have to preform some exemplary service to the world, be it in the arts or charity work or whatever, and citizenship doesn't come into it, but some of the people that have ended up with them recently make you wonder wtf is going on, it seems like they are handed out by the government to drum up publicity... I feel sorry for the Queen being asked to knight idiots like Beckham.
David Beckham has an OBE, not a KBE, he isn't a knight.

From the impression us Australians get in the media, they hand out knighthoods in cereal boxes in the UK. If you're known by more than ten British people, huzzah! Guaranteed knighthood.

I remember a few years back they knighted the entire English cricket team for simply beating Australia in the Ashes series. Then the next year, Australia beat them. It was like beating the colonists is some sort of divine test that guarantees immortality or something...

Fuck knighthoods, I call no man sir.

One less person getting one is a good thing, regardless who they are.

Erm, OBE. Officer of the Order of the BRITISH Empire.
KBE. Knight Commander of the BRITISH Empire.

And so on and so forth.
Jobs is an American business man who's made a shitload of cash. Woot.

Gates, while the same (as someone has said) has contributed to saving lives, one of his most recent activities predicted to save 750 million children (forgive me if I'm miss-quoting here).
That's nearly a 6th of the world's population. And even then he's only an "honorary Knight Commander".

Dame Kelly Holmes was made a Dame for outstanding achievements in representing Britain.
Sir Eric Clapton knighted for great musical talent, shaping a generation of music and being a fore-runner in British entertainment, the same with Sir Paul McCartney.

It takes something special to be knighted, not just a shit-ton of cash and business acumen.
If that was all it took, where is the founder of Xerox's knighthood, or James Cameron's?

Thank you for posting that up right,I support the rejection of Steve Job's knighthood because I don't know of anything overwhelming philanthropic activities he's engaged in. Bill gates on the other hand jumped the human race forward, and is now spending a large percentage of his total worth to reaching out to those who weren't as fortunate to be lept into a more modern generation.

I think even better would be to only grant Jobs a title as "Honorary iKnight."

But given the proprietary nature of the Honorary iKnight title, it doesn't actually mean shit once you leave an Apple store...

I'm pretty sure Mr. Jobs can live with that though; he has the power to put a lowercase "i" in front of any mundane word, paint a relatively sleek item white, and call it a day. No matter what it is, like with any fanboy fanbase out there, they will buy it!

Good.

There's something indefinably creepy about Jobs. I could easily envisage him leading a cult ala L Ron Hubbard (some might say he already does) or sitting in his secret underground base plotting world domination and surrounded by sharks with frickin lasers (and some might believe he already does...)

Indeed, a friend of mine describes him as 'one lab accident away from being Doctor Doom'.

I'm surprised James Cameron doesn't have an OBE or a KBE actually, for all the work he did with the Titanic. Jack ass that is, he did some solid work on documenting that thing.

I am at a loss at how honorary knighthood is these days, as it seems to be handed out to anyone anymore. If I remember right, Bill Gates got his knighthood for his work with his foundation, not because of Microsoft. I haven't heard of anything good coming from Steve Jobs except inventing more ways to bilk people.
So it is actually more likely he was denied because he didn't deserve it. Imagine that.

Can someone inform the ignorant american here exactly what you need to do to get knighted? Cause it seems every rich person has the title now.
