One of the key things in Akira was that the drugs were a key part of the plot. Include with that the violent nature of the psychic powers... it's going to be hard to get a PG-13 rating while keeping the feel of the original manga.

Will Hollywood ever learn that the only people who would care for japanese material are the ones who DON'T want to see it americanized? and ESPECIALLY not PG-13!! Oh well, it's no like this hasn't happenned before. It's THEIR loss.

I'm sorry, but if they're aiming to turn this into a PG-13 movie, that means half of the mature stuff from the movie/comic might get cut off (like Dragonball Kai). Also I'm surprised this movie is still in development. Hopefully it'll be better than Dragonball: Evolution.

This is why people who want decent live action anime adaptions can't have nice things. Akira is supposed to be directed towards an adult audience. The same thing happened with One Piece. The studio decided that Animation=for kids and watered down basically everything in the series and changed other things meaninglessly. The dubbed anime originally sucked as a result. The producers do this sort of thing and then when the movie bombs they blame it on a lack of interest and it simply isn't done anymore. it doesn't have to be set in Japan with asian actors and references to Japanese Culture. This isn't a dub of a japanese move so those things aren't necessary. But the subject material should be kept in tact.

Because movies based off of animé are always great.

No wait they're always extraordinarily shitty. My mistake.

Hollywood seems to being going back to cult classics...this and the Videodrome remake come to mind, the only problem is that in both situations the effect of the originals is going to be destroyed by the 'mainstreaming' elements that Hollywood likes to inject.

Well, the Akira animated film was badly written, horribly paced and an hour too long so maybe the new live-action one will be okay. Impossible to judge Zac's suitability for the role as he's never done anything like this, but surely he wouldn't have been hired if people didn't think he could do it justice.
The live action one will be okay? There isn't much, if anything, to indicate that.

The whole thing totally reeks of racial foul play.

Yeah, Zac Efron? Not a really an issue. The problem is far, far deeper than that. Why is it so difficult for Hollywood to stay true to the source material when adapting something to film? Lord knows they have the budget to make it seem authentically Japanese. This consistent whitewashing is pathetic.

To be fair, PG-13 movies don't all have to be fun and games--take a look at Cloverfield. However, it's still not acceptable, given the content of Akira. Do it justice or don't do it at all.
I agree completely. If they're going to twist it, warp it, butcher it, and whitewash it beyond recognition then why bother doing anything with the source material at all? Why not just make something original? They may claim to like the source material but I think that's a load of bull. It would seem more likely that they like all of the things they could do with it. Or perhaps do TO it.

But what bothers me most is that the whole thing totally reeks of American cultural imperialism and racial foul play. This mess sounds like it could make Dragonball Evolution look not so bad by comparison. A disturbing thought indeed.

I don't know, the new Akira movie would have to be pretty awful to be worse than the old one. It's not the worst film ever or anything but certainly one of the most disproportionately crap ones compared to the amount of hype and critical acclaim it received. I saw the thing in the cinema when it came out (yes I'm that old), and god what a massive letdown it was.

There's no reason why the thing has to be Japanese - apart from, of course to appeal to irrationally Japan-obsessed fanboys. Any story that is any good at all can be easily transposed to any other setting with only superficial changes and still work, just look at how well the Shakespeare works adapt to different settings.
