So is Dragon ball, but look how they screwed that over...
Comparing Akira to Dragon Ball is like comparing Ben 10 to Fritz the Cat.

But I see what you're getting at.

Topics like this make for a good age-check. If someone is raging, you know they're in the 13-20 bracket. If they don't give a damn, it's a safe bet that they're 21 and over and have barely even heard of this kid, much-less care if he's in the movie. Also... PG-13 doesn't really bug me. I honestly barely notice the difference between a PG-13 and an R movie, so I doubt it'll hurt the movie that much.
Seems like someone never saw the R rated Die Hard 4. There is a definite difference between PG-13 and R rated movies, or at least, there really should be.

I don't care much for Zac Efron, mainly because on all the posters I've seen him on he's got this look on his face that makes me want to punch him. Never seen one of him movies though, so I could be wrong.

I'm just not going to watch the movie. I can't how they're going to do be able to do it well, so I'm not going to see it.

So let me get this strait: Akira, a very Japanese anime is being made into a movie, and in doing so they're turning the whole bloody thing American?????
What the hell are they thinking/smoking!

Hollywood definitely has lost the plot here. Movies don't need to be set in the US to appeal to non-Asian audiences. Really, how in the name of hell did they get permission to tentacle rape this story like that....

@WhiteTigerShiro: I'm almost 30, and yes this bothers me, not because of Zac Efron, but because of what this means they're doing to the original story.

So, you all hate Zac Effron because you think he's a terrible actor? Have you ever seen him not acting? If he's able to make you all think he's actually the character in High School Musical, then that shows how good an actor he is.

But I hate him in everything.

He was in Firefly. He didn't ruin the episode he was in, let alone the whole series.

Michael Cera wasn't the obvious choice for Scott Pilgrim, and some people went on about how this would ruin the movie.

It didn't, he was fantastic in the role, so at least give him a chance.

What the hell? Death Note and now Akira too..? Well, i don't have any problems with Zac, but i have a problem with High School Musical. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how it turns out.

I predict that if this actually happens that Zac Efron will be brutally murdered by a crowd of anime fans

I don't really care that Efron is going to be in "Akira", I haven't seen his films so I can't comment on his acting ability. What I am more interested in is how they are going to make the film PG 13. The last time I saw Akira was about 5 years ago, but from my memory, the amount of stuff they are going to have to cut out means that there wouldn't be a film to act in.

In this thread, people will complain about having Efron play the role while not taking into account how he is actually a damn fine actor.

Seriously, just because he was in HSM doesn't mean he is shit. He made a hell of a lot of money off of those movies too. Best damn business decision he could have made in my mind.
I'm with this guy. I'll admit I'm bad at judging actors myself, but from what I've heard a lot of people say he's really talented. People need to remember actors are just that, actors, not the roles they play (and not their fanbase either for that matter). Just because he was in High School Musical, that doesn't mean it's the only character he can play.

Warner Bros. is said to be aiming for a PG-13 rating, which may mean a lot of content gets cut or otherwise altered.
That's the problem right there. Akira is supposed to be violent, it's the world it's set in. You don't get biker gangs giving out flowers, you get them beating the shit out of each other because that's the violent future they live in.

And besides, when has dumbing down a film ever made it better? Die Hard 4 anyone?

Please don't remake such a classic, especially with the PG-13 restriction and location change.

I hope the studio making this catches on fire.

The thing is I can see Effron playing Light Yagami (I actually think he'd be good at it, too, since Light is SUPPOSED to be a ponce) but Kaneda is a different kettle of fish. I don't care what Effron has been in or if he was good, this is like starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka... and we all know how that turned out...
I do think he PG13 thing will kill this film before it even begins production. Twice now it's shut down already, and I guarantee thats the problem. Hell even the more hardcore Japanese AKIRA movie cut serious amounts from the manga (which is supposedly what THIS movie is based on!) For example, some of the key scenes from the original story were:

Gang violence and murder.
The only 'nice' character gets raped then later shot to death.
Class A narcotic and 'tripping' scenes.
Drugging and raping of teenage schoolgirls.
And an eight year old boy gets shot in the head... and then explodes... killing THOUSANDS.

Once they realise just how much stuff they will HAVE to cut out as a given, the project will fall apart, until Hollywood realises they may as well try and cut Panic in Needle Park to a PG. Still, if somehow they do manage it... we get to see Tetsuo jump into space and punch a crater in the MOON.

Forever awesome.

Well... shit.

Pretty much sums up my view of this train wreck of a movie startup.

Radically changing an IP to much to make it "appeal" to a wider audience can alienate many of the hardcore fans who would normally be safe bets to see/buy/obsess over it and blow up in your face when "mainstream" viewers go meh at it. My money is on this scenario happening.
