Though I must say, you know what will be fun?
When Mr Effron performs the character-defining scene for Kaneda, where he fakes his way into the school nurses office, buys a bag of class A drugs from the girl who works there, and completely ignores her hints that he got her pregnant before calling her a stupid ***** and leaving.

After all, they can't leave this kind of crucial stuff out, it would be madness...
I myself can't wait to see the scene where Tesuo gives a bunch of girls mindbending drugs, causing them to brain hemorrhage to death as they're getting freaky with eachother.

This is perfect! Maybe the weirdness and crazy factor in Akira will make Efron into an actual human being, rather than a retarded bob-cut with a glittery lockawed smile!

And cue everyone complaining about Zac Efron, despite the fact that he was an actor long before High School Musical (he was a child actor and I believe was in at least one episode of Scrubs, IIRC, and he also played a young Simon Tam in certain Firefly flashback scenes). And he's done some good stuff since, no least The Life And Death Of Charlie St Cloud, a recent release, and managed to put his 'Disney days' far behind him. Which is a feat so far achieved by a very few, the only other recent Disney star who's successfully done so is Selena Gomez, with her success as an indie/alt rock musician and with backing band 'The Scene'.

My point is, give the guy a fair chance. He's a good actor, regardless of him starring in a few duds. He's done some serious stuff in the past, and been in some really good roles. So he may well be able to pull this one off well too, assuming the rumours are true. Don't just judge him on what he's done in the past, because that's just being ignorant, and being completely biased and dickish for no reason.

I don't know anything about Akira, honestly, but I think Zac Efron would do fine because he's actually a talented actor, all "High School Musical" rubbish aside. I mean, that was a Disney movie called High. School. Musical. I don't think the casts of Monty Python, The Expendables, and Oceans 11 combined could save that!

From the sound of things, this Akira movie translation faces danger (as usual) because of (1) Lowering the rating and content for the bloody "PG-13 crowd" and (2) a combination of poor directing, writing, supporting cast, and/or 3D gimmickry. And I think we all know that somebody's pulling for 3D, even at a Last Airbender level.

The Casting? If it's going to be western written and produced, it's not appalling. He has at least a smidgen of talent.

The real issue here is the rating. What the fuck -.-

Live-action Akira remake? Oh, for fucks sake. Let's just hope they don't completely butcher it.

Zac Effron being cast? Eh okay, whatever. He's a capable actor. That boy better do his goddamn job.

Warner Bros is said to be aiming for a PG-13 rating? ..............................fuck you Warner Bros.

I'm more concerned about how the movie will live up to the series.

You know how these "americanized" movies turn out. (see: DBZ-Evolution, Avatar)

On one had...
THEY ARE MAKING AN AKIRA LIVE ACTION MOVIE? GLLLLEEEEEEEEE!!!
On the other hand....
PG-13? So then they aren't going to develop the characters or the setting? I mean, they really can't, have you seen the original? Their high school is R-Rated, and the movie starts with two warring gangs fighting on bikes. People die, and that's half the point. What are they going to do in this? Trade mean words? They establish a character (Kairi) as all nice and sweet, and then crush her to death. Most of the characters, including the sympathetic ones, are terrorists and gangsters, and the rest are the scientists researching and hiding Akira and the soldiers fighting and dying to keep the fan and the shit apart, and failing. This is not a movie for 13 year olds.

Also, Zac Effron? Really? He couldn't pretend to lead a biker gang, I bet he couldn't pretend to lead a parade.

He's a competent actor. I don't get why people are getting their panties in a bunch. Just 'cause he was a Disney tween he can't move on to other things in life? Please.

If anything, the main problem would have to be that casting him as either "Kaneda" or "Tetsuo" is way too much of a gamble considering his present typecast status. The studios would have to put on a strong marketing campaign so as to keep expectations on the film on the right track, in case they opted for using his name for promotional purposes.

The problem isn't Zac Efron himself.

I think as an actor he may be able to pull it off... i'm be more worried about the producers watering down the original ideas to make it appeal/accessible to Efron's fans.

I`m going to be on the fence for this particular subject for now. I dont like the fact that a one time disney star is going to be in any anime a live action movie, but I`m not going to begrudge him because he has the Disney Stigma.

Get Kanye West instead! Cookie for reference.
You mean,... Kanye West as Tesuo?

Good Christ man, what are you thinking!?
That's what I'm thinking.
Yeah, I thought so.

I'd rather have Daft Punk play Kaneda and Tetsuo.

[sub]Still prefer the original Harder Better Faster Stronger.[/sub]

Casting of Zac Efron? Doesn't bug me too badly. They could do a lot worse.

PG-13 rating? R-R-R-RAAAAAAGE!

Combining the plots of both manga and anime, I remember that precisely one character was american.

And he wasn't young.

I'm not quite bothered with Efron working on this as much as the slight hints that this might not quite be set in Japan with japanese people speaking in japanese.
