About time...

That dpad is terrible. Even for the things it does in games its uncomfortable to use. Should have never been done that way.

Reminds me of every bad Dpad I have had on PC controllers.

Ive never had the D-pad get in my way in a fighting game but I supose its their product so they can do whatever they want.
I always play Street Fighter with the analog stick. It's less precise, but fuck the Xbox D-pad. Fuck it to death. Pulling off moves on that thing is annoying as hell - it can't seem to decide whether it wants to be a pad or a stick. I don't care enough to buy a new controller over it, though...

Unfortunately, the source didn't say whether the change is intended to become the new standard on 360 controllers or if it's going to be limited to special, promotional items like the controller brought out in Europe for Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 [http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Evolution-Soccer-09-Playstation-3/dp/B001DTSW2K/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1283248482&sr=1-1].
I think it might be a little pointless on a Pro Evo controller, since while the pad does have functions, you're generally better off not using them at all, as they just get in the way and usually lead to your player losing the ball.

The only serious change required for a Pro Evo controller is removing the bloody right analog stick! Whoever decided to asign it to 'manual pass' should be shot for placing the most aggravating, useless control next to the most commonly used ones. Especially when the same stick used to control the ball skills and one drunken slip or forgetful moment can break an attack into pieces.

The hell with fighting games, I use the Analog Stick for those anyway. It's platformers that the D-pad is absolute horse shit. Unless they fix problems about the D-pad being WAY too touchy about it's up/down inputs, the D-pad will still be terrible, even after these fixes. Playing that XBLA Castlevania game is absolutely atrocious because of that D-pad. That, and just about any other platforming game where you can crouch.

The biggest problem is that it isn't a D-pad at all, but an analog stick with a D-pad stuck on top. >.>

They should just copy the Sony D-Pad, really.
Yeah I agree. Why didn't they do that in the first place? I mean seriously the 360 D-pad is so frustrating when you're trying to play a fighting game like Tekken, Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter, when you're used to the classic D-pad the SNES and PS1 had.

Truth.

Sony-style D-pad on an XBox360 layout (asymmetrical analog sticks) = perfect gamepad.

It's what I use for my PS3 ^.^ (PS3 Shadow 6 Wireless controller -- the only issue with it is that it isn't Bluetooth and turns itself off after some time, which messes up long cutscenes in games).

Sounds good to me. I know I'm a huge fighting game fan but have actually avoided playing fighters on the 360 simply because of the dpad. Though if I were going to be spending money on a controller specifically for fighting games, I'd probably but that money towards a good stick (or at least one of the SF4 branded pads) anyway.

I hear a lot of people complaining about the D-pad, but can anyone tell me what exactly is wrong with it? Not saying it's perfect or anything - I never ever use it, possibly because I don't play fighters. Just wondering why it's often regarded as crap.

The Playstation style "embedded +" and the Nintendo style "raised +" are both great designs for a console's directional pad. The current Xbox style, which is... "+ on disc", or (+), is just awkward and actually painful to rapidly slide your thumb over in fighting games. Obviously, "true fighting game aficionados" buy expensive joysticks or even build their own, but I'm a fan of Guilty Gear and BlazBlue who can't afford to shell out for a custom controller, and want to play at a low-to-moderate level of skill without my thumbs blistering! This design change is good news.

Well, seeing as I really don't find fighting games appealing, it doesn't really matter to me whether the D-pad gets changed or not.

The D-pad definitely is a pad ontop of a stick. That said, i dont use it often, so its no worries :D with all this retro crap coming out again they should just make a wireless keyboard and have done with it. While they're at it, may aswell do a mouse too, then all thos RTS games (halo wars, C&C etc) will actually be a damn sight easier to play.

GOOD.

Have you tried doing a Shoryuken on that piece of shit? I don't know what they were thinking, they've essentially got 3 analogue sticks, and one of them is shite.

Doesn't matter to me anyway, I just use the analogue now. It's like having a mini joystick which ups my game in many ways.

Well that's good, that D-pad is just total shit for fighting games. There is little sense of precision from it when it comes to tactile feedback which is very important in a fighter. It feels so awkward and unresponsive doing certain actions like a 623 motion (aka Shoryuken) or even a simple half circle, I can't count how many times I botched certain actions in Blazblue because of shitty D-pads like that.

Frankly I wouldn't mind if they ripped off the PS3/PSP D-pad because that's hands down the best and most responsive D-pad for fighters. You really get a good sense of precision from those ones and you hardly botch playing with those.

It only took what? Five years of bitching? Way to be on top of things Microsoft.
Seriously.

Sorry, Microsoft, but MadCatz beat you to the punch by making fighting game controllers that didn't suck. Microsoft got upstaged by MadCatz.

Yeah, they're not doing this because they care about the consumers. If they did, we'd have had functional D-pads three years ago, at least.

I'd still much rather have the Razer Onza when it comes out. That controller looks SICK!
