Ive never had the D-pad get in my way in a fighting game but I supose its their product so they can do whatever they want.
I always play Street Fighter with the analog stick. It's less precise, but fuck the Xbox D-pad. Fuck it to death. Pulling off moves on that thing is annoying as hell - it can't seem to decide whether it wants to be a pad or a stick. I don't care enough to buy a new controller over it, though...

Unfortunately, the source didn't say whether the change is intended to become the new standard on 360 controllers or if it's going to be limited to special, promotional items like the controller brought out in Europe for Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 [http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Evolution-Soccer-09-Playstation-3/dp/B001DTSW2K/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1283248482&sr=1-1].
I think it might be a little pointless on a Pro Evo controller, since while the pad
does have functions, you're generally better off not using them at all, as they just get in the way and usually lead to your player losing the ball.
The only serious change required for a Pro Evo controller is
removing the bloody right analog stick! Whoever decided to asign it to 'manual pass' should be
shot for placing the most aggravating, useless control next to the most commonly used ones. Especially when the same stick used to control the ball skills and one drunken slip or forgetful moment can break an attack into pieces.
