I've always wanted this to happen. So now that rumors are starting, they'd better be true.

I would play this shit out of this game.

A Sony nostalgia-fest brawler without Tir McDohl would be a snorefest brawler indeed.

For all the constant reminders that Nintendo milks all of its first-party licenses for all they're worth, Smash Bros. was ingenious. Why? Because milking every property they owned ensured these characters would not be forgotten. Sony backs a lot of franchises, sure, but only until they lose relevance. They never try to KEEP them relevant. So while Smash Bros. has a couple characters in its roster that are a bit more obscure, most of its characters are immediately recognizable. Even adding in Snake and Sonic, who are very recognizable, is a legitimate move (the very first Metal Gear, long before MGS, was on the NES. And every current console currently owns a piece of Sonic now).

But what games does Sony have, and if not games, what characters? If they try to fish up every character that put them on the map, they're going to be paying out a lot of royalties, because that largely came from 3rd Person Parties. Tomb Raider(once Eidos, not sure who now), Jak n' Daxter (Naughty Dog), Crash Bandicoot (used to be Naughty Dog), Ratchet and Clank (Insomniac), Metal Gear Solid (Konami), Disgaea (Atlus), Suikoden (Konami), Katamri Damacy (Namco), SMT/Persona (Atlus), Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Parappa the Rapper, Twisted Metal, Legend of Dragoon, Final Fantasy 7-13 (Square), Spyro the Dragon (once Insomniac, now ActiVision) Jet Moto, The Mark of Kri (which is at least partly owned by Capcom), Xenosaga (Namco), Tekken (Namco), MediEvil, Little Big Planet, Uncharted (Naughty Dog)... and that's only factoring in those things largely exclusive to Playstation outlets (which I say very loosely).

The licensing for those non-Sony-owned things alone will be legendarily horrific, leaving them with very few things in that list that they don't have to ask/pay for up front. Then there's all the games that used to be Sony-only but went cross-platform, such as the new Prince of Persia and the Resident Evil series. Then there's all the games that started out cross-platform. And Nintendo (who will treat this as competition) and Microsoft will be even bigger pains to pay licensing for.

Then there's the tone of the game. Smash Bros. is mild, cartoon violence. Even with grittier characters like Snake in it (and MGS is chock full of bizarre comedic moments), it's a lighthearted game at its core. Trying to combine the tones of all of the games Sony can choose from into a cohesive tone is going to turn out worse than a kindergartener's arts and crafts project. It's going to look and feel like a mess. Except there will be no soccer moms around to give it false praise. Well, maybe IGN....

Sony would be better off negotiating with Microsoft and Nintendo to do one big fanservice brawler using all of the characters between them. That's how you muscle in on SSB; you make a game that assimilates it. And you have Capcom's MvC team create the fighting engine.

My main thing is, if this does turn out to be a real game, keep it far, far, FAR away from the PSMove. Other than that I hope this does end up being a real thing and like almost everyone else here, I hope they bring in Crash Bandicoot. It's highly unlikely though since Crash is currently being stored in an Activision vault but it would be pretty sweet seeing him return home. Also I feel I should point out that any fight involving Kratos is going to automatically be a little bit more than one-sided.

How the fuck would a parappa the rapa v kratos fight go? I think that is a bad idea...

But I agree with above posters if they do make this game crash bandicoot would have to be in it, he was on the goddamn demo disk for the ps1 and aside from jrpgs probably had the highest selling franchise on the system.

I dunno...I mean, this would be like a dream come true if executed correctly. But it doesn't look like it so far...

Sony, it took you long enough to decide to rival Nintendo's SSB series with your own. You would think you would at least the copying part right.

I can see this working if:

-They create something a la MvC3. That is, every character is given an almost "cartoon-like" feeling (Who would have thought a dog would be as badass as, say, Wolverine?), they're all balanced, they're beautifully animated so that people don't end up choosing Sweet Tooths only, they're all given a vast variety of moves and styles and stuff like that.

-They choose the right characters. Hot Shots Golf? Who plays that?! What's next, Invizimals? EyePet? Even if it considered a game that sells, does it have iconic characters? Nintendo got away with Ness because A) Ness was an unlockable character, so he wasn't there right off the start to be discriminated against. If anything, you felt like you WANTED to unlock him. B) He was iconic. Maybe Earthbound is an old school classic, but it was a classic nonetheless. Hot Shots Golf? I doubt it. James Bond? I...never really thought of him as an iconic Sony character, seeing as he's more of a movie/novel character and the most iconic and best James Bond game so far (GoldenEye) was originally released for the N64.

So, I would recommend:
?Jak, Daxter, Ratchet, Clank, Sly and one of Sly's sidekicks. Sure, they were all already in Heroes on the Move (It will never be Playstation Move Heroes for me; that's a dumb name!), but they're classics and iconic. You just can't have a game without them.
?Nathan Drake
?Cole McGrath
?Kratos
?Old Snake (In your face, SSBB!)
?Sackboy
?Parappa the Rapper. Or even better! Lammy from Um Jammer Lammy! Who else liked the game?! ...No one? Just me..? Haven't even heard of it...? *Sigh*
?Someone from Tekken
?A Helghast (Bonus character?)

And the harder-to-get-but-glob-that-would-be-awesome characters:
?Crash bandicoot. Because he was originally Sony's pet.
?Spyro. For similar reasons as the one above.
?Dante. Again, similar reasons. And he's badass.
?Someone from FF7, FF8, FF9, FF10, or FF12. Because they're still PS exclusives for the most part (I know about the PC versions, yes)
?Pyramid Head. Because people would literally throw their wallets at you if you did this. Thus, SH was, yes, you guessed it, a PS exclusive.
?Someone from Kingdom hearts. Same reason as Pyramid Head's one. And not only would they throw their wallets at you, they would throw their underwear and their wives at you too.

Come on, Sony. You guys know what we want. You've proven [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdWkKKSckNk] it already. Don't screw this up and you can have my money, all of it.

I'm not sure what to make of this silly idea of a game regarding SSB as an obvious influence. However, most Sony exclusives I've seen turned out pretty well... thus another war starts between them. *shudders*

Crash Bandicoot vs. Spyro.
You might not know this but those two are not Sony exclusives anymore for around 10 years now regardless of the PSP ports.

Did somebody say Jet Moto? How would that work? They would look like Power Rangers without a hoverbike.

Kratos VS Batman... I wish. My bet is on Batman.

A Monster Hunter
You have just won this thread, sir. I wish they could do that. I would buy the game in a heart beat!
How would you be able to tell? THe armor is so mix and match how could the characters look like a Monster Hunter character?
I would say they should use the Rathlos armor, which is generally the most iconic. That's how I'd be able to tell. The Rathlos armor was used in Lost Planet 2. ;)

If Crash and Spyro can somehow make it into that...

PLEASE. I want to see the two fight it out. They were my favorite platforming characters of my childhood, and I cannot decide which one was better, so obviously the two need to duke it out for my <3.

Really, a rumour like this isn't anything to get hyped or angry over. I'd base my opinion on concrete things like confirmed rosters, not "maybes".
^This... Sooooooooo this.
I never had any real attachment to any of Sony's console exclusive characters, and there have been enough of these crossover things already, I'll pass.

I'm a little skeptical about this, but it does make me glad that somebody is finally going to challenge Smash Bros in the party brawler genre. Issue though is that it may be too little to late. I'm just not sure Sony has enough recognizable characters to fill up a roster and the fact that Smash Bros is such a long lived and recognized brand will make it difficult to compete with. However, if the price is reasonable and if it includes Jak from the Jak and Daxter series (please?), I may give this game a shot.

yes we've all seen it before but look at all the characters in it that they've licensed from other companies.

Agent 47
Solid Snake
Lightning
Chell
Paul from Tekken
A little sister from Bioshock
the guy from Dead Space
and Ezio

All this for an ad.

Imagine what they'd do for this game (yeah it would be more expensive to license them for a game than for an ad but still).
I will admit, it would be awesome to see those characters in the game, though I personally doubt it (especially Snake, since he appeared in the competition).
Also, I did not see Chell in there, unless you are talking about the woman behind at check in, but that is really a stretch.

I don't care what characters they throw in, if there is no Sir Daniel Fortesque then I shall commit a fan rage the likes of which this internet has never seen.

I could play Pokemon Silver on my N64, so you're wrong about that as well.
Wrong fucking way. Playing a portable game on a home console isn't the same as playing a home console game on a dedicated portable system, though I guess if you're 6 (which, since you're a Nintendo fan, you probably are) it can be easy to confuse them.

If you've ever played the game, everything in the world of LittleBigPlanet is made from cloth. Or foam, or stone, or any of those materials. So Epic Yarn is basically LittleBigPlanet without the variety of substances. And those nubs, yes, Nintendo did blatantly rip that off from Arcades, but the idea of using two for the one players experience was an idea that Sony invented, and Nintendo copied shamelessly. And when Sony did it again for the Vita, Nintendo did it again shamelessly, even after they'd shamelessly ripped off the PsP, they tried to release a damn hardware patch to rip off the Vita, and do a poor job doing it.
Oh the "u liek nintendo so u must be a child" argument, how it makes me lol so very much.
You disregarded the technology gap between the N64 and the PSP, so I will not bring it up. Disregarding valid points seems to be an essential attribute that you Sony fanboys seem to have (as other posts in this topic have done). The best part of playing Silver on my N64 is that I could do things with my Pokemon in Stadium 2, and the things I did with them would be saved onto the game. Not the same as what the PSP does of course, but still quite cool to beat the Elite 4 with my OP pokemon rather than the really poor choices they give you.

I like how all of you assume that if Epic Yarn makes a game out of cloth, that another game has done before, then it is a blatant ripoff. Will you also say that Halo is a rip off of CoD because it also has guns? Or that Skyrim is ripping off Diabo 2 because it has a norse race?
A game is not ripping off another game if it has the same texture style, only an idiot would assume that.

Finally, what the fuck are you talking about? "two for the one players experience was an idea that Sony invented", so you are saying having 2 nubs on a controller is stealing from Sony? Well the Xbox controller has that. The only Nintendo controller to have that is the gamecube, and the c-stick is not used like a second stick in most games. Nintendo has had a d-pad and control stick since N64 days, they just haven't implimented it for handhelds until the 3DS. So they are stealing from themselves, not Sony.
I don't know what you are talking about with the Vita, so I will do what you did, and completely ignore it.

I don't see why companies can't just go and do every famous character and throw them into a SSB clone. I want to see Cmdr Shepard fight the Stranger from Oddworld stranger's wrath and then have Raz from psychonauts put the beatdown on both of them.
