LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! May I present to you...WINDOWS VISTA 2:ELECTRIC BOOGALOO!
Yes,that is my opinion just from the fact of when Windows 8 is being released. It will suck and then Microsoft will make a Windows 8 2.0 and label it as a brand new Windows. Just like with Windows Vista being fixed and reshipped as Windows 7.

Well, if that means I can play Fez, Shadow Complex and Reach on my PC, so be it.

Let the emulation begin!

Rumor: Windows 8 Will Play Xbox 360 Games

Sadly, cross-platform play will apparently not be a feature.

If you want to play Xbox 360 games on your PC at the moment, then you have to jump through all kinds of hoops involving emulators and such, and that's not exactly an idea solution. But according to insider sources, when the new version of Windows arrives, all that will change.

According to the rumors, Windows 8 will be able to run Xbox 360 games without the need to mess around with emulators. There is the suggestion that anyone actually wanting to make use of this feature would have to pay a subscription fee, although it's possible that that just refers to playing it online, as is the case with Xbox Live. People playing on a PC apparently won't be able to play with their console brethren either, as multiplayer will use the Windows Live service, rather than Xbox Live.

If this rumor turns out to be true, it would be an interesting move on Microsoft's part. Hundreds of millions of people use Windows, and while obviously not every Windows 8 user will want to play Xbox 360 games - or indeed, be able to - it has the potential to massively increase the install base for 360 games. Interestingly, Microsoft has recently folded its Games for Windows Live site into Xbox.com, which might mean nothing, or it might be a sign that this rumor has something to it.

Microsoft has yet to confirm when Windows 8 is coming out, but most rumors point to an October 2012 release.

Of course, this won't remove the Xbox, but it may signal a merging of both game console and computer operating system. I know, as a loyal PlayStation gamer, I would potentially buy the odd 360/gen8 xbox game, if I knew it'd work on my powerhouse PC, running Windows 8, its genius in a way, if the consumer has already paid for a PC/Laptop that has capable specs compared to the 360, they could cash in big time on the software side, which is where all the money is made anyway, since those people need only spend another 60/100 bucks each game, multiplied by millions, its great. It could harm its console market, but I believe not enough to say 'lets not do it'. Its so brilliant they should've thought of this years ago, and I hope there's truth in the rumour.

by the by, OP means to say ideal* solution, not idea.

I would be impressed but you have to go making it exclusive to the computer meaning I still have to have a 360 just to play with my friends and if you're just gonna do this microsoft then why bother with 360s now? it seems your just phasing them out at this point
Actually it seems more like phasing PC games out. Am I the only person that sees this as a bad thing for PC gaming? We'll get the same cookie-cutter console version, where you can't adjust settings, or do anything that makes PC gaming worth it.

It'll be the same console experience. Why have a gaming computer that can run these games if you aren't going to take advantage of it?

The real question is would it be able to play next gen xbox games, i.e games from the successor to the 360? The 360 successor is not that far away after Win 8 launches. But maybe that is the plan to allow you to play last generation titles only.

Also that feature would be useful only for titles that never came to the PC from the 360, but other than that why would you want to pay a higher price than for the PC native release.

So if true it is interesting, but not so much if it will only be for a console about to be replaced at, launch of Win 8.

And no-one is going to pay just to play with other PC players as their are plenty of other titles that do this for free.

If they try and charge for some PC version of Xbox live to play console games then I won't be impressed. I mean, they aren't hosting dedicated servers or anything for each game, those are all peer-to-peer as far as I know. Otherwise, about bloody time - no real reason that PCs with the right software couldn't have a stab at running any current gen console game, really. PS3 would be a pig with its unusual processor, but Xbox and Wii are standard machines with pretty standard components. Nice marketing grab, but will backlash if they start charging for the ability to do it.

Ah, but they did get Vista right the second time. I'm not so convinced about Win8's interface mumbo - bit more of a radical change than XP->Vista, and that's not something a second iteration is really going to change...

Yeh right. Why release a console if you can give everyone a console-ready OS for $200.

I know not everyone can run modern games in high resolution, but if you can smoothly run Windows 7 with all the options on in high resolution, you probably can run them.

Well I hope it does pre-360 games as well. Right now I have no means of playing this copy of Panzer Dragoon Orta I bought lest my collection be incomplete >.>

Can't play with console players? That sucks because I would look forward to stomping them at Halo.

I wonder if this would cause licensing issues. Don't a lot of companies contract out different stuff for different platforms?

Am I the only one who is feeling comfy with Windows 7 right now? It has only been two years since Windows 7 released. Isn't there usually a 4-5 year gap?
I enjoy my windows 7 too.

I don't want to upgrade yet, I'm having too much fun.

This is it right here. You won't get a PC port anymore, you'll be told that if you wanna play it on PC, then play the 360 version on your PC. You will be using the 360 controller on your PC, not keyboard and mouse. Maybe if you're lucky they'll sell you a control pack DLC enabling that support but it won't be the norm.

The only PC games we will get will be games that are PC exclusives.

While this is a cool idea, my one concern is that it will prevent some titles having a proper PC version made. Why bother, just play the Xbox one right?
That's what has me kind of nervous about this. While it will be a big benefit to many, I'm more a PC gamer than an Xbox one. So what happens if PC or multiplatform developers, Bethesda for example, drop a PC release because they think PC gamers can just buy the Xbox version?

I doubt Microsoft would do that without some extra charges (other than XBL or Games for Windows Live). It sounds awesome, but they want people to pay for their console.

If Microsoft can create a 360 emulator that runs on modern hardware, so can those who make emulators for free. Why upgrade to Windows Desktop Phone 8 just so you can BUY an emulator when you could stay with Windows 7 and download one for free.

They've realized returns on software vs hardware, then doubly realized that they're a software company.

Stickin' to what you're good at!
