Aerith's death in Final Fantasy VII.

Yeaaaaah, no. It might hold some emotional value if people hadn't driven it into the ground by quoting it more times that the Cake is a Lie.

For me, it is this scene from Retribution.

Goes from an emotional punch to pure awesomeness.

When Mike died in RE4.
The chopper pilot who turned up nearly out of nowhere, made cliche idle chitchat, then died the usual helicopter pilots death?

Sorry, but for me watching Luis die was sadder.
I didn't connect with Luis like I did with Mike.

Yuna's speech at the end of FFX. Sure, FFX-2's has somewhat ruined the poignancy of it, but still, that scene had me tearing up.

I'm quite sure you know which ending to which game this is from..and the fact it wasn't mentioned yet is damned disappointing
Alright, I'll take the fall. What is this from? It's beautiful.

The first that come to mind is the most recent genuinely sad moment I experienced while gaming.
Assassin's Creed Revelations:
When you play Altair's very last moment, and get the objective "Just sit down and rest for a little while", right after his farewell to his son.
I actually had tears in my eyes.
It was a great moment. I don't think that I've ever walked that slowly in a game before. I knew what was going to happen as soon as the door started closing and it made me tear up so bad.

Dear God... That was horribly sad. Did the writers save all the good story telling for the DLC? There was nothing that compelling in the main story, in my opinion.
I think the writing stayed consistently good but the reason it was so compelling was the subject, you would have to some kind of machine not to cry at 'man abuses his autistic brother'. Now that i think of it, bioware was kinda cheap doing that. But anyway still an amazing scene

I'm going to ignore Lost Odyssey and talk instead about the entire second playthrough of Nier, which I completed recently.

"What?!" I hear you say, "Nier? That game that had a couple of very sad moments but I would definitely not consider a very sad game?!" You say that because the developers made a fatal mistake, and at least some players probably missed a massive, massive part of the game. If you wait 'til the credits finish after completing it the first time you're given the option to save, and if you do so and reload that save... wow. Wow.
You play through the game again, starting from about halfway through, and get to see the game from the perspective of the shades. At several points in the second playthrough it cuts to scenes involving the four bosses between then and the end, and also subtitles appear at the bottom of the screen when shades talk, so you can now understand them (although the characters still can't). And... wow. Never before has a game made me feel like such a prick. Turns out things aren't quite as you thought, and it really paints you as the game's villain, as you do some pretty goddamn awful things without realizing. What makes it worse is that on your first playthrough you just stormed in and cut down the bosses like you would any other enemy, and then when you see what you did on the edited playthrough... yeah, you're all dicks for playing this game. The Shadowlord is easily one of the most tragic game villains of all time, and this game seriously deserves more recognition.
The game impacted me so much it's unbelievable. I still haven't gotten over it. If Yahtzee played the extra playthough I think his review would've been much different.

The scene where you pay your respects to your parents in Batman: Arkham City also had me all choked up. Those damn cellos just pull at my heart strings so hard.

Hmm... lets see. Basically it's whenever a major character i've come to like gets killed off, or a character loses someone that is really close to them, with their sadness ending up becoming yours. Examples I can think of are Jock in Deus Ex 1, Carlos in Saints Row 2, Leandra in Dragon Age 2, as well as numerous examples to come from Ezio's journey in Assassin's Creed 2/Brotherhood/Revelations. Honorable mention also goes to the ending of FFX.

I'd have to say my personal saddest experience, beyond the obvious Metal Gear Solid 3 ending.

Thief: Deadly Shadows
Keeper Atremis' death. While they didn't try to tug your heart strings, I felt it. He was the only character who ever seamed to stay around Garrett, who ever could keep up with him. He actually believed in Garrett even when the evidence was stacked against him. He felt like Garrett's only friend as I saw it, even if they didn't do the usual friendship things. And the way he died?

Max Payne 2
Mona's death. Yet another woman dying because of Max. That whole scene just left me sad and cold, but in a good way. The kind of scene you WANT to see from a game. The kind of scene I doubt we're going to get in Max Payne 3.

Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations
The picture of Mia and Maya as children, over the broken pot. It was just so bittersweet to see the two together before they died again. Actually, the entire ending was one mess of bittersweet. Godot's tears especially.

That's a good one. Fortunately, that didn't happen in my first playthrough, and I managed to get to the true ending. But I can understand that being really sad if you thought that was supposed to happen.

Anyways, I'll have to go with Persona 4 as well, specifically the ending. Seriously, saying goodbye to all those characters that I had gotten so attached to, it was almost like saying goodbye to real people. That's... never happened to me before in a game. Just goes to show how great Persona 4's characters are.

Teddie's monologue really got to me and to add to the already touching ending, The MC pulls out a group photo.

My eyes aren't wet, I swear.

Ending's to Halo: CE, Halo 3, and Halo: Reach (Y'know what, add to Reach the Pillar of Autumn's launch, Jorge's death, Kat's death, and Emile's death.)

Mass Effect on Virmire, Mass Effect 2 on pretty much every loyalty mission, but Thane and Mordin's in particular.

Ending to Call of Duty 4. (I don't mean the epilogue). End of the US Marine campaign in Call of Duty: World at War. Dmitri's death in Call of Duty: Black Ops (the game was pants overall, but that bit was just brilliantly tragic. After all he had fought though and all he had survived. He gets killed, slowly and painfully, by his own commanding officers, as part of a science experiment. Fucking bastards!)

Ending to Portal 2.

Ending to Red Dead Redemption.

All of these get honorary mentions, but the winner for me has to be... Batman: Arkham City.

"You want to know something funny? Even after everything you've done, I still would have helped you."

"You know... that actually is... pretty funny."

Then the body being laid out at the end. I, I just... What's the Churches stance on marrying software?

Why John?! WHY?!!!!! you could have taken pot shots from the top of the barn, or flank them, anything but what you did.
and Infamous 2
I cried when Zeke died. He was such a likable guy. Words can't express what i felt.
