Man, that used to be such a happy song... Mordin's fate was the only thing that's gotten me to tear up in years.

This is nowhere near the saddest moment in video games and I have played other games that should have made me sadder but for some reason (perhaps it was just the mood I was in at the time) the only thing in a game that has ever had me in tears was the neutral ending for bioshock 2. Specifically when she says ?But father, wherever you are...I miss you."

Arrgh my emotions make no sense sometimes. I watch it now and I even find it all that sad.
I second this. Interestingly, while I think Bioshock 1 was a better concieved and more significant game, it's emotional tone was less personal than the sequel.

For all the hate the sequel gets for not being coming close to the watershed (har har) moment the first was, I felt it was crafted with a lot of love and if it were carrying an original theme / IP / setting, it would have been assessed much more charitably.

In my own little world, I choose to believe Bioshock 2 isn't canon, but is a lovingly made, officially endorsed piece of fan fiction.

----

Movies, comics and TV just DON'T pull at my heartstrings... It's not a failing on their part, I'm just kinda clinical and detached. A few videogames do, which I feel is a subjective testament to the medium, but even then they are few and far between. For my own submission to this thread, I would point to the chilling, downer ending of Halflife Episode 2. Talk about a cold close. No spoilers, but if you've played it, you know what I'm talking about.

Saddest moment in gaming?

Windows Vista/7.

I can no longer play planescape torment or baldur's gate 2 :(
Baldur's Gate 2 runs fine on Windows 7 for me (but I know what you mean about Planescape Torment).

Anyway mine: Everytime you play an action-oriented game which decides its time for an escort mission!

Real option: Betrayal At Krondor has a sad ending. That would be the first one for me and still the one I found most compelling because of how the story and characters had grown on me (I still replay the whole game every couple of years).

Failing to protect Faridah when she gets shot down. Never even gives a hint shes about to blow the chopper-jetthing

For some reason when I was a kid a was really anal about protecting my army it gave me great micro but when a heavily armed convoy that you sent to rescue a few troopers on the other side of the map gets ambushed and destroyed it really hit me hard.

Ezio/Altair's final scenes in AC: Revelations. Overall probably the poorest game of the series (although still really no worse than mediocre), but those last moments with Ezio. So sad.
If you thinks that's sad just watch Assassins Creed: Embers.

Zelda: Majora's Mask
The Song of Healing. Especially when played for Mikau and the whole part around the Zora domain after that.

Also pretty much every scene with the giants in it.

Metal Gear Solid 3: The whole ending... *sniff*
Metal Gear Solid 4: Big Boss's death
Big Boss didnt die in MGS4, he shows up in the end holds old snake up from commiting suicide
.....Have you actually played it?
Yes I did. It was a long time ago but I remember that Zero dies at the end and not Big Boss.
Big Boss comes into contact with Snake's new strain of FOXDIE and he goes to sit besides the Boss's grave. He has one last smoke and says 'This is good, isn't it?' then dies at last.
Aw shit...how didnt I notice this. Now im sad that Big Boss is dead ;_;

There's the scene :p
Yeah I watched the ending on youtube again and remembered what happened.
*checks wikipedia*
Wooow! Its been 4 years since it was released. Maybe I have to replay it again when I'm done with the first MGS and the HD Collection

The death of Mordin Solus (Mass Effect 3). If ever there was a character that didn't deserve it, it was this guy (his work on the genophage notwithstanding). May he rest easily in that great lab in the sky...

The smaller stories in ME3. Finding out that the girl the PTSD Commando has been talking about the entire game is Jokers sister, the teen refugee at the docks patiently waiting for her parents to show up, and the guard protecting her. She is old enough to realize that they died so she would make it out, but young enough that a part of her still can't accept that. The Turian tech deploying to the front lines saying good bye to his asari wife, glad that they will be safe at Sanctuary while he fights for them. Finding out what is actually happening at Sanctuary.....

Corrupted save files

All that hard work... completely gone
All those great memories and sweet loot... completely gone
That annoying boss that you beat purely by luck... completely gone

There's also the death of Lucy in Assassins Creed 2. More shocking in its execution, still I was sad.
Fuck Lucy. ***** was a Templar Double Agent. Got much less than she deserved.

Also, don't mean to be anal or anything but she died in Brotherhood.

Holy crap. Whoever wrote that likes Alice in Chains and Soundgarden a lot. I didn't even know about this game until just now. Guess I'll be buying it now.
If I've gotten you to want to play Bastion, then I would say I've accomplished something good.
Bastion is, hands down, one of my all time favorite games.

When the little boy dies at the beginning of Mass Effect 3... I cried for half an hour and had to call my best friend for emotional support. I will never forget the nameless boy.

That was when I become emotionally involved in ME3. That scene made me so damn sad, and the constant flashbacks pulled me into the experience. Say what you want about the endings, but the build up was phenomenal.

For me, Final Fantasy VII - Crisis Core. If you played through Final Fantasy VII proper, you know about Zack so you have a really good idea how Crisis Core is going to end. Then you beat the game...

I am unashamed to admit that the ending of this game made me cry a bit.

The end of Final Fantasy X gets a mention here too because...

...the whole game hypes up how much of a dick Jecht was to Titus. Then you find out more about Jeckt, the sending process, how Sin is fought etc...you get the feeling that even though Titus begins the fight by telling Jecht he hates him, it seemed like neither of them wanted to fight each other. It just felt very sad to me. It was sad when Auron had to be sent at the end but I thought stuff went unexplained...like how Auron didn't go evil like Seymore. Also, why Titus had to be sent. Haven't played X-2 so maybe it's answered there.

What are some of the most heart-wrenching moments you've experienced while playing a game. Moments that have made you feel connected to the game, made you feel an emotional response, maybe even made you shed some tears.

For me Journey was moving in its entirety. I can't really put it into words. Along with that:

When Anderson tells you that he's "proud of you son" just before he dies, I started to tear up.

The mission where you can choose to leave or rescue Zulf in Bastion got me as well, mainly because the gameplay and soundtrack blended so well to draw you in. "Mother, I'm Here" is a wonderful song.

<youtube=YlfUcnSbKDA>
Fully agree with both of these. I wept during the end of Bastion after carrying Zulf away from his people. I don't know if they stop attacking you out of respect or just out of fear.

Act Raiser for the SNES:

In the third town, which is in a desert, a man goes for a walk. You cannot save him. In memory of their fallen kinsman, the town...INVENTS music.
Talk about a moving memorial.
