Liam Neesom.

I repeat: Liam Neesom.

And in ep's 2 & 3 Euan McGregor as well when he loosened up a bit.

1) Good fight scenes,

2) Actually introduced a plot into (lets be honest) a redone "save the princess" fairytale (albeit one I love),

3) Better cinematics,

4) Characters with more depth (with some notable exceptions!) - Remember this is relative to the prequels not some abstracted perfection. (this is a switch people forget when moving from judging the first ones to the second ones - the first ones had nothing to compare with)

5) A much larger scale - moving beyond the main characters to a whole universe,

6) An impressive level of ambition even when it didn't pay off,

7) It maintained a feel of jedi-ness in the story which is attractive at a base level,

8) Lightsabres.

I think the main reason people prefer the older ones, is that they were younger when they came out (and lets remember the original intended audience is older kids), and the critical mass of haters. Also, as much as i dislike the JaJa binks character, it was obviously an attempt to replicate the ewoks for kids. No wonder 39 year old dudes find it doesn't speak to them!

The nerdrage it caused justifies my hate. That is all.

[small]Wow, I'm starting to sound like Darkseid when I discuss this stuff.[/small]

Pretty much everything, since I actually liked the prequels for some reason. Oh well.

Personally, I remember really enjoying the prequels when I was younger. But that was years ago, so my tastes may have changed.

I have seen the trailer for the 3D re-release of The Phantom Menace though. And music and spectacle wise, that movie still has everything in spades. As for whether I'll still enjoy the characters and story, I'll have to find out when I see it again.

That moment when Darth Maul lit up the second blade on his lightsaber.

I thought Liam Neeson pulled off a very good balance of a Jedi that was mainly about resolving problems without having to use the lightsaber, and being able to use it when necessary.

Epic battle scenes. They don't add much plot-wise, but seeing a panoramic view of a huge battle really gives you the feeling that these are entire planets at war, and not just countries or whatever.

I liked the pod races, they were cool. Oh and Jango Fett's death was far more awesome than Bobba Fett's. because he actually put up a fight in place of being inattentive to his surroundings.

how do you let yourself be killed by a blind guy?

I.....um......Jar Jar binks had colorful eyes?

In all seriousness, I loathe the prequels, but if anything, the one thing I thought was actually done well was at the end of 3 when Obi-Wan gives Luke to his Uncle and Aunt.

It actually looked like the same set/scene as episode 4 and it made me smile.

Then this happened and I thought "well thanks George. Thanks for taking my moment..."

I know it is not a well accepted opinion, but actually enjoyed the prequels.

I realize there were some bad parts, such as Jar-Jar, but generally I thought they were acceptable movies by today's standards.

Natalie Portman is so attractive, so very, very attractive...

But on a more serious note, I thought the CGI (for the most part) was great, the set pieces were fantastic, and George Lucas has the ability to portray just how truly beautiful, unique and vibrant each and every world is, from the deserts of Tatooine in The Phantom Menace to the stormy and isolated Kamino in Attack of the Clones.

Also, let us not forgot Christopher Lee as Count Dooku.

Lets see here, Liam Neeson, Liam Neeson, Liam Neeson, oh, and Liam Neeson. In fact, I actually really liked Episode I, it was Episodes II and III that I wasn't fond off, and I owe that to hayden christensen.

Ewan McGregor and Christopher Lee.

I Like Obi Wan and Dooku as characters and it's entirely due to the performances of their respective actors and their ability to breathe life and personality into the weak dialogue, nonsensical storytelling and ham fisted direction they were given.

Ewan McGregor is sexy as Obi-Wan! xD

On a serious note, the action scenes are pretty damn entertaining and a lot of the characters like Darth Maul and Jengo Fett are really cool.

Haven't seen them in a while, but from what I remember the effects were pretty and I liked Darth Maul. Also, without the prequels we wouldn't have Darths & Droids.

The music was pretty awesome.....and.....oh! The light saber battles were pretty awesome, and that's about it.

Anymore and my fist will have to come flying to my face.

I could say many nice things about them. Well they've certainly stimulated a lot of discussions. ...oh wait, said discussions annoy the fuck out of me. Never mind.

Truthfully though, I thought Palpatine's plan for taking over was brilliant. It was so brilliant in fact that I now look at the original trilogy and think what a shame it is that Palpatine is reduced to a Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain.
